Coretta Scott King

by ImpeachCheneyFirst (SaveFreedom [at] yahoogroups.com)
Queers lose a friend, as progressive African-American civil rights leader Coretta Scott King dies.
Coretta Scott King was politically progressive, from the 1940s onward (when she supported the Progressive Party).

She spoke out openly against the Vietnam War,
before her husband could do so.

[ Please listen to radio report on
National Public Radio's Morning Edition,
Tuesday morning, 31 January 2006.

[ Historians could compare her early progressive history with that of
Rosa Parks (in 1930s and '40s).
In both cases, during the latter decades of their long lives,
their early political histories weren't widely publicized. ]

.......

In recent years, she spoke up for the civil rights of queer people;
at a time when some African-American clergy oppose same-sex marriage.

Ave, atque vale.
