Protesting Hillary
Picket her all you like! Just don't publish pseudo-info.
Dear fellow progressives,
SF Bay Guardian recently invited readers to join a Code Pink protest against
"Hillary Rodham Clinton, attending a campaign fundraiser for her re-election,
hosted by the Bar Association of San Francisco."
Any alert journalist should notice the limburger scent
in the paragraph above.
The Bar Association of SF is nonpartisan and nonprofit. It includes lawyers of all political stripes -- even (gasp!) non-Democrats. How could it host a fund-raiser for a political candidate?
SFBG should have fact-checked this obvious anomaly, before publishing it.
Or, if they didn't have time to check something which smells absurd at first sniff, they could have deleted four words; to read instead, "attending a fundraiser".
According to Matier and Ross, the Jan. 28 event was indeed a fund-raiser
-- for some charitable project.
(But, like, is Hillary trying to advance her career?
Ummm, is the Pope homophobic?)
Usually, SF Bay Guardian provides true and useful information on politics,
thereby encouraging progressive actions.
Untrue statements merely weaken the Guardian and its allies.
Let's hope this won't happen again.

PS 1: No, "POP" is NOT a fan of Hillary.
Not at all!
PS 2: How did this falsehood start?
Perhaps readers might ask Code Pink?

low turnout for Hillary
According to SF Chron,
there were around 1,500 in Senator Clinton's audience;
plus "about two dozen" protesters (mostly outside).

[ Comment:
Organizers had hoped to sell 3,000 seats
(see previous discussion in Matier & Ross column).
The (relatively) small audience MAY indicate lack of support for her, among local Democratic Party activists; and/or the bad weather on Jan. 28; and/or the fact that 2008 is so far in the future (while Calif. activists are worried about June and November 2006); etc.
Fantasists, start your crystal balls... ]
