Here is some information on how to view coho salmon spawning in Lagunitas Creek and its tributaries. Thursday's storm raised water levels enough to kick off the season, which lasts into early January.

In the center of the picture is a female, and just above her is a large male. Note the red color of the male. The blur at upper left is another smaller male, which is hovering in hopes of a shot at fertilizing the female's eggs. Note the light color of the gravel around the female. This is a redd or nest, which she has dug by thrashing on her side. At the bottom of the picture is a much smaller male, called a jack, which is also hoping to get some action. The larger salmon spend about 3 years in the ocean, while the jacks are males that return after only 6 months in the ocean.

The salmon move in pulses about a day after each storm, so timing is very important. Be sure to ask other people in the area if they have seen salmon, word of mouth is the easiest way to find them.

Bad News For UK Energy
On the 27th October the DTI published the following information, thanks to Nick Rouse for bringing it to my attention:

For the three months June 2005 to August 2005 compared to the same period a year earlier:
- production of petroleum fell by 16.2%;
- production of natural gas fell by 17.0%;
- production of coal and other solid fuels fell by 24.9%;
- electricity produced from nuclear sources rose by 11.8%;
- electricity produced from wind and natural flow hydro fell by 4.4%.

What I find amazing is why this wasn’t news. Why wasn’t this the talking point of the day with John Humphrys quizzing Malcolm Wicks in the morning, John Snow presenting some scary graphs at 7pm and Jeremy Paxman giving over Newsnight to the emerging crisis, it certainly deserves the coverage.

The 17% fall in natural gas is the most concerning in my opinion since there isn’t the import or storage capacity to make up such a huge difference even if the gas was available on the market. We can probably discount the increase in nuclear as an anomaly since we know the fleet is being decommissioned over the next decade or so, I’ll put it down to there being one or more reactors down for maintenance in 2004 that are operating again now.

I quoted this graph a few weeks ago from the DTI Energy Trends publication, it can now be updated with the latest data.

That doesn’t look pretty does it? I had to extend the y-axis to fit August on the graph! The extraction rate for August 2005 was 54.7TWh compared to 73.3TWh, a decrease of 25% year on year.

Most of the attention (well what little attention is on resource depletion at all!) seems to be on oil. Oil depletion and the term peak oil is becoming known, a few dozen books have been written, peak oil is mentioned in the newspapers every week or so but gas hardly gets a mention.

Even amongst the peak oil advocates gas is usually dismissed by saying the global gas peak is a decade or more after the global oil peak. This misses the point though. I think gas depletion will cause acute and more immediate problems in certain parts of the world than global peak oil and long before the global peak gas extraction rate. Yes, by certain parts of the world I mean the UK. America are also likely to have difficulties with gas this winter with the hurricane damage only compounding what was already looking like a very tight situation.

The difference is that oil can be easily transported, in 1970/71 when American oil production peaked it wasn’t (too much) of a problem since the rate of extraction decline was low and more oil could be imported from overseas. A local gas peak is different. Post peak decline rates are likely to be faster than oil and it is incredibly difficult to import from overseas. This is the problem the UK now faces and I don’t see how we can overcome it. I doubt we will be able to replace beach gas lost through depletion and even if we do find a willing vendor they’ll be able to name their price whilst offering us little or no security of supply.

With oil, gas, coal and soon nuclear energy production crashing, the UK must face reality, we must either reduce demand in a controlled fashion in line with reduced energy production, import energy at immense cost (if even available) or face serious disruption.



Some Solutions to the Sheople Problem

I would support the idea of moving Congresscritters (AND their staffs) back to
their home districts, both because it would reduce costs (Washington is NOT an
inexpensive city to live in) and because it would tend to make them (AND their
staffs) more responsive to the people they supposedly represent.

WHAT: Marbled Murrelets, sea birds that depend on old growth forests for nesting, will “fly in” to Sen. Feinstein’s office to protest destruction of their habitat in rare ancient redwood forest on California’s north coast. Besides the murrelets, activists will bring photo representations of the old growth grove.
WHY: Ancient redwoods, some over 15 feet in diameter, standing over 300 ft tall, likely to be thousands of years old. are being logged in prime marbled murrelet habitat on Maxxam/Pacific Lumber land. This elimination of habitat of the murrelet, listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is allowed under a provision of the 1999 Headwaters Deal, negotiated by Sen. Feinstein as well as other federal officials and Maxxam CEO Charles Hurwitz.
In recent weeks, activists have locked to trucks, climbed and maintained vigils high in the branches of giant trees, and challenged US Fish & Wildlife Service’s permitting of this plan in the courts, but logging of massive trees on steep hillsides continues.

On Veteren's day, Maxxam/Pacific Lumber (PL) started logging in the Nanning Creek Grove in Humboldt County, and have now moved into the ANCIENT REDWOOD GROVE that includes trees OVER 15 FEET IN DIAMETER and up to 2000 years old.

Earth First! and Humboldt Forest Defense activists have erected tree-sits in the branches of some of the massive trees, and have held vigils at the logging road gate outside Scotia, including a lock-down action last Monday when four people were arrested.

JOIN THE GROWING RESISTANCE TO THE DESTRUCTION OF PRECIOUS OLD GROWTH FOREST HABITAT!

Nanning Creek Grove is east of the company town of Scotia and comprises the largest chunk of in-tact unprotected habitat for the federally listed Marbled Murrelet in California.

Logging in this rare habitat, which should be protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is allowed under provisions of the 1999 Headwaters Deal, negotiated by Senator Feinstein and other government officials and the infamous corporate raider Charles Hurwitz, CEO of Maxxam Corp.

The murrelet is listed as threatened under the ESA and as endangered under the California ESA. Permission granted by US Fish and Wildlife Service for ScoPac to log this critical habitat flies in the face of a 2004 report commissioned by that same agency that stated that current logging practices in Northern California threaten the small seabird with an 80% probability of extinction in the next 55 years, and a 100% probability of extinction in the next 95 years. The 250-acre plan was cynically named named "Bonanza" by PL.

Jennifer Roberts, author of Redux and Good Green Homes, will give a sneak
preview of her next book, Good Green Kitchens, which will be published in
Spring 2006. Learn about what makes a kitchen green, and hear about
Jennifer’s real-world experiences with having her own kitchen ripped out
and rebuilt at the same time that she was writing about other people’s
green kitchens.

The San Francisco Guild meets once a month to discuss green building topics
including: Home Remodeling Green Building Guidelines, Tankless hot water
heaters, Hydronic heating, envelope upgrades, etc.

The SF Green Remodelers Guild is held the second Thursday of the month at
the San Francisco Department of the Environment, 11 Grove Street, 5:30pm -

public taken a bigger interest in natural history than during the
mid-19th century in America and Britain. This was a time of great
voyages of discovery, when fabulous fossil beasts were first
unearthed and put on public display. Most of today's renowned science
museums, including the California Academy of Sciences, were
established amid this enchantment with natural history. No middle-
class home was thought complete without a display of butterfly
collections or stuffed birds. John Dillon, Science Director at the
Randall Museum and President of the San Francisco Amateur
Astronomers, will explore the nature and extent of this fervor and

Former Chief weapons inspector for the United Nations Special Commission in Iraq, Scott Ritter, will share his first-hand account of how the CIA manipulated and sabotaged the work of UN departments to achieve the U.S.’s hidden foreign policy agenda in the Middle East. Labeled a hero by some, a maverick by others, and a spy by the Iraqi government, Ritter was the UN's top weapons inspector in Iraq between 1991 and 1998. Before working for the UN he served as an officer in the US marines and as a ballistic missile adviser to General Schwarzkopf in the first Gulf war.

In charge of searching out weapons of mass destruction within Iraq, Ritter was on the front lines of the ongoing battle against arms proliferation. His experience in enemy territory served as the basis for his book Endgame, which explored the shortcomings of American foreign policy in the Persian Gulf region and alternative approaches to handling the Iraqi crisis. Ritter went back to Iraq in 2000 to film his documentary, “In Shifting Sands: The Truth of UNSCOM and the Disarming of Iraq,” which focuses on the disarmament of Iraq and its implications for U.S. foreign policy.

In 1991, Ritter joined the United Nations weapons inspections team, or UNSCOM. He took part in 52 inspection missions, 14 of them as chief. His team in 1995 discovered missile guidance equipment that Iraq had bought from Russia through a Palestinian agent. He led the UN weapons inspection team into Iraq in January of 1998, only to be blocked from the weapons sites by Iraqi officials. Accusing him of being a spy, Iraq refused Ritter and his team an escort to the inspection sites, thereby preventing them from doing their job.

The Pakistan earthquake has killed thousands of people and promises to take more lives this winter. We in the United States can share our wealth and our compassion with those in need by donating to the relief effort.

The Plant Compassion: Flowers for Pakistan Project is an act of civic participation to raise awareness of the devastating October 8 earthquake and to raise money for relief. Volunteers will plant hundreds of donated flower bulbs in a San Francisco public park, which will act as a conduit of our goodwill and support to those affected by tragedy. Additionally, the donations you make in honor of this project, will go directly to the relief fund Doctors without Borders, who are delivering urgent medical relief to severely wounded people.

Our flowers will bloom in the spring, which will be evidence of our continued support to our brothers and sisters who will still be struggling to rebuild their lives. The act of planting a life in the earth is real as well as symbolic. Time of course is of the essence.

Planting party is December 10th, 9am till noon, in Garfield Park. Meet at Harrison and 26th street in the Mission. Wear closed-toed shoes, long pants, and layers. Tools and snacks provided.

Meet the Dyke March, an afternoon of performance, videos,

"Meet the Dyke March" festivities will honor San Francisco Dyke March

reminiscences of Dyke March history; and an opportunity for members

Dec 17th, Third Annual International Day to End Violence Against Sex
Workers

International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers is meant to
call attention to hate crimes and violence against sex workers all
over the globe. Originally thought of by Dr. Annie Sprinkle and
started by the Sex Workers Outreach Project USA as a memorial and
vigil for the victims of the Green River Killer in Seattle
Washington, it has grown to be a day for strategizing to end these
acts as well as remember the victims. Over thirty cities around the
world have participated in this event.

This year Sex Workers Outreach Project is expanding events to cover
the entire week of December 17th so that we may diversify the forums
for discussion around violence against sex workers.

The Panel Discussion portion of these events on Dec. 17th from
10AM-2PM will focus on both identifying forms of violence against sex
workers, including structural violence and stigmatization, as well as
thinking of solutions. Panelists will include sex workers' rights
activists, sex workers, prison abolitionists, law enforcement, and more!

Our tentative schedule for this entire week is as follows:

artwork and or written word to be displayed at the candle light vigil
in Civic Center at dusk on December 17th. Make yourself heard in the
fight against this violence. Please submit your personal response to
violence against sex workers, your vision of a better future for sex
workers, and your message to the victims and/or perpetrators of these
tragedies.

# Unsilent Night Wed Dec 21 6:45 PM Free

"Unsilent Night," composer Phil Kline's free, all-volunteer outdoor
boombox holiday concert, returns to San Francisco for its third
annual performance on Wednesday, December 21, 2005, at 6:45 PM.

A moving piece of ambient public art, Unsilent Night can be compared
to a holiday caroling party, except that participants don't sing.
Instead, each carries a boombox playing a separate cassette, CD, or
MP3 that becomes part of the piece. In effect, Kline and his co-
performers become single elements in a huge, mobile sound system.

Performed within the confines of the city streets, Unsilent Night
reverberates off the cars and buildings, resulting in a magnificent,
drifting cloud of shimmering, echoing sound. The 43-minute piece
includes chiming bells, choral voices, and various electronic
effects. (Kline cites Brian Eno and Charles Ives among his influences.)

Kline has performed Unsilent Night in Manhattan every year city since
1992. In San Francisco last year, some 500 people took part. This
year marks the first chance for iPod users to participate, as Kline
will make MP3 files of the piece available on his website.

Participants are invited to bring a boombox to Mission Dolores Park
at 18th and Dolores Streets, gathering at 6:45 PM. After Kline
distributes tapes and CDs among the players, the group will begin the
piece, strolling a mile-long, predetermined route though the Mission,
Noe, and Castro districts. The event will be held rain or shine.
