NOW Members Lobby Senate on Supreme Court Nominee

Activists Travel from Across the Country to Help Defeat Samuel Alito

Grassroots leaders from around the country will join national NOW leaders in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Nov. 10 to urge their senators to vote "No" on Samuel Alito. NOW announced its opposition to Alito the same day George W. Bush nominated the federal appeals court judge to fill Sandra Day O'Connor's seat on the Supreme Court.

"By nominating Samuel Alito, Bush hopes to send our country back to a time before civil rights, before Roe v. Wade, and before the New Deal," said NOW President Kim Gandy. "NOW members understand the importance of bringing our message to Capitol Hill. Replacing the moderate O'Connor with an ultra-conservative judge like Alito will place many of our hard-won advances at risk."

Local activists are traveling to D.C. from coast to coast, and leaders will meet with senators and staff from states including: California, Colorado, Utah, Wisconsin, Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Maryland. NOW's lobbying efforts will continue through the Senate hearings in January.
Who: Kim Gandy, NOW President
and NOW activists from across the U.S.
What: Senate Lobby Day on Samuel Alito nomination
When: Thursday, Nov. 10
12:00 noon
Where: Noon briefing at Mott House, 122 Maryland Ave. NE,
followed by afternoon visits to senators' offices

"Every senator who supports fairness and equal rights must consider what a Roberts/Alito court would mean for women and girls," said Gandy. "We cannot afford to lose decades of advances toward equality."
