BRAIN DRAIN: "National Clandestine Services"
This plays out quite like we expected. I imagined that many agents, directors, would not be too big on this new "National Clandestine Services" farce of Negroponte and Goss, and thus a "brain drain" for these reasons, and many others. Like we can afford it. ~~John E

2000 DEAD AMERICANS...
TAKE ACTION: ORGANIZE AN ANTI-WAR VIGIL, RALLY OR OTHER PEACE EVENT FOR THE DAY AFTER THE 2,000th U.S. SOLDIER IS KILLED IN IRAQ
The sad day is coming when the 2,000th U.S. soldier will have died in Iraq. We need to use that milestone to remind people of the human cost of the war and call for the troops to come home. United for Peace and Justice supports the calls of our member groups - American Friends Service Committee http://www.afsc.org/2,000 Gold Star Families for Peace http://www.gsfp.org and Military Families Speak Out http://www.mfso.org - for actions on the day after the 2,000th U.S. serviceperson's death is announced. We urge to you join the hundreds of peace and justice groups throughout the country as we tell the President, Congress and the world that 2,000 U.S. deaths in Iraq is 2,000 too many.
We will remember the 2,000 U.S. servicemen and women who have died in Iraq.

# Demonstrate - UCSF - October 20 & 21 - National Primate Liberation Week
Dear Animal Advocates, Companions, Guardians, Vigilers, Lovers and Liberators:
It's official - there will be 2 demonstrations - as part of National Primate Liberation Week - at UCSF, 513 Parnassus Avenue in San Francisco - on October 20 & 21 (Thursday & Friday), 11:30 AM to 1 PM both days.
Currently UCSF has about two hundred nonhuman primates behind its walls - including rhesus monkeys, marmosets, owl monkeys, and perhaps others (we don't have a full accounting of all species of monkeys currently incarcerated at UCSF). On any given weekday you may see (if UCSF allowed public access to its labs) from 25 to 40 monkeys in various restraint devices, called "primate chairs" by researchers. The experiments that call for restraint of monkeys often involve food or fluid restriction. This type of so-called medical research is most certainly cruel and unethical and thus calls for our protest. As Lawrence A. Hansen, M.D., stated three years ago before the Public Works and Public Protection Committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, "I doubt that most San Franciscans would want to watch these monkeys with their electrode-implanted brains and bolted heads performing their eye movements in exchange for water. Most San Franciscans would feel sorry for the monkeys."
There will be other things you can do besides demonstrate in case you can't make it to demo's - like writing letter(s) - more info regarding to whom/what to write will follow in later e-mail.
Bob O'Brien
IMPORTANT PS: Recently it was suggested by Valerie Tulier, w/ state Senator Carole Migden's office, that we should network with other movements/org's. I was thinking, since next week is National Primate Liberation Week (NPLW), we should hook up with activists in the prison reform movement - maybe we could extend NPLW and join others in the next upcoming demo re prisons for human primates. Or maybe we could take action in support of the release of Leonard Peltier, an American Indian, wrongfully incarcerated in federal prison (check out http://www.leonardpeltier.org/) for too many years. Anybody interested???

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi Hosts Art Opening of Tim Gaskin'sWork
"My work is a statement on how artists and advertising brands become
icons."
On Friday, October 21, 2005, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi hosts the
monthly Third Friday's Art Reception in his City Hall office, Room
282. This month's featured artist is Tim Gaskin.
Tim Gaskin is a third-generation San Franciscan, pop artist, and
television and print journalist. He has been influenced by left-coast
politics, the sexual revolution, television, magazines, fashion, the
HIV/AIDS pandemic, local art, and dance music. Gaskin uses his art to
transform and enhance the environment of others. His work has been
called "inspired pop art, each seeking the balance of nature and flow
of energy with just the right mix." His Superstar Collection includes
strikingly vibrant Warhol-esque portraits of contemporary pop-culture
icons. Gaskin is also the producer and host of Comcast's first LGBT
show OUT Spoken.

Whiskey. NO MEN ALLOWED to wrestle, no biting, hair

from the ring. It's gonna be some ruckusy fun shit.

# Vegan Voices Sun Oct 23 3:00 PM
Sunday, Oct 23, 3:00 pm. Vegan Voices: A Talk on Veganism with lots of info and free cookies! Come join Hope and Cogen Fauna Bohanec, two knowledgable and long-time vegans, for a conversation about daily choices and the impact veganism has on our health, the planet and the animals. Please join Hope and Cogen for this incredibly informative lecture on how you can help save lives, perhaps even your own! For Your Health- It is the position of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) that a plant based diet greatly reduces your risk for the most common degenerative diseases, stroke, cancer, heart disease etc...For The Earth- Animal agriculture is taking a devastated toll on our planet. Wasting land, water and petroleum while creating vast amounts of waste, polluting our groundwater, rivers and atmosphere. The fishing industry is depleting our oceans, over exploiting 80 percent of our fishing estuaries worldwide causing marine mammals to starve without enough to eat. For The Animals- In the time it takes for this evening's lecture, 4 million animals will be slaughtered for food. If you want to eliminate animal products in the order that the animal suffers most, you should cut out dairy and eggs first.
“Nothing will benefit human health and increase changes for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.” -Albert Einstein.

# Hot to Trot Hokem Hootenany Sun Oct 23 9 pm onward $5
Fresh Fried Fish Fancifully Fandangled For Forthright Freeman and
Frisky Fillies
Hoooo nelly do we have a gin-u-wine hootenanny for you this Sunday at
Amnesia! Leave your false teeth at home, wrap your finest rope around
your waist, polish them boots with the housecat and pull your jig up
by the hoot straps for a full-blown bucket of jug band and swampy
blue bally-hoo. Don't miss this one of kind chance to stomp a little
bit of the devil out of yer hearts with THE GOMORRAN SOCIAL AID AND
PLEASURE CLUB, WINK PAIN, and BLUE ROOTS! All rights reserved and all
reservations have their wrongs.
Originally hailing from New Orleans itself, The Gomorran Social Aid
and Pleasure Club, a six piece good time - junkyard cabaret - hot
jazz -hobo psychedelic - drunken revival day - trash can lid gospel-
of-sinners group, are preaching the holy gospel of sin brothers and
sisters. Each blaring stab of the trombone, each sweet clarinet
cadenza, reverberates with sin, bouncing off the sinful walls and
into your sinful ears. Maybe as you hear it, you'll be able to let
all your devilish guilt and meanness out of your heart. You'll be
able to let your heart go free and raise a glass with your brethren.
Can I get an amen? Can I get a Salud? L'chiam! Proost! Hallelujah!
Wink Pain is the devil dealing alter ego of Freddi Price, band member
of the internationally infamous Rube Waddell. Some have proclaimed
Wink as a local treasure, others compare his delta inspired crooning
to an alley cat on a tear. With a gravely pair of bluesy pipes and a
steel guitar slung low, Wink Pain will take you on a ride down some
true blue veined American byways and backwaters.
Blue Roots, fronted by trumpeteer and multi instrumentalist Lesch
Worzinski, is a true to form tub-bass-thumpin'-washboard-scratching-
jug-band. Playing all manners and styles of music from old timey to
jazz to originals, Blue Roots reverts music back to it's irreverent
sources where playing songs was more about what's handy than what
instrument is in your hand. But don't mistake Blue Roots for some neo-
retro pastiche; these are serious accomplished musicians who believe
that to 'jug or not' is in fact the question.

Thinking Critically About Propaganda
Instructor: Marlys Mayfield, author of Thinking for Yourself.
Lecture and Discussion Topics include:
.Why we love propaganda
.Why we believe it affects others, but not us
.How we have come to accept ever-widening U.S. government use of 6propaganda
.How the U.S. public relations industry makes propaganda ubiquitous and acceptable
.How propaganda affects news sources and corrupts democracy.
Historic and current video clips will be shown to illustrate commercial and political propaganda. Recent innovations will be discussed like government-produced, counterfeit "news releases," and a new state department of "public diplomacy" whose purpose is to market America abroad. A bibliography will be provided.

What is the Spiral Dance?
The holiday popularly known as Halloween is the time of year known to witches as Samhain, when the veil is thin between the worlds of the living and the dead. We gather to remember and honor our ancestors, our Beloved Dead, and all those who have crossed over. As we mourn for those we love who have died this year, we also mourn the losses and pain suffered by the Earth, our Mother. Yet even as we grieve we also remember and honor the sacred cycle of life, death, rebirth and regeneration, celebrating the births of our children born this year, and our own vital connections to the Earth and each other, in which we ground our hope. more...

Chet Helms was one of the founding fathers of the psychedelic movement from the 1960's. As promoter for the "Family Dog", Chet developed the concept of the modern rock concert and was one of the founding fathers of the 1960's peace movement that swept the nation and made waves around the world. Chet was also the catalyst that brought together Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, which helped shape the San Francisco sound. Without Chet Helms, as many have said, there would be no Grateful Dead, no Jefferson Airplane, no Big Brother and the list goes on and on. He promoted other acts like the Charlatans, the Great Society, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Peter Tosh, The Clash and countless others. Chet Helms continued promoting pivotal concerts through four decades. In the 60's at the Avalon Ballroom, Family Dog at the Beach, S.F. Golden Gate Park, Denver Dog, and Crystal Ballroom in Portland.

Welcome to Halloween in the Castro, one of San Francisco's most unique neighborhood celebrations.
This is the 3rd year that the City has come together with Castro community organizations, businesses and neighbors to create a safe, fun, entertaining evening.
Be creative. Halloween allows us to transform ourselves for this night of merriment. So dress up.
Our biggest change is that Halloween in the Castro does not allow drinking of alcohol on the streets.
When you arrive, our wonderful San Francisco Sheriffs will welcome you at the gates. Please give at least $5 to support the event. Sheriffs will confiscate alcohol and ensure that no one comes in with dangerous costumes or props (in 2002 someone brought in a working chain saw!) so leave those swords, hockey sticks, and power tools at home.
There will be three stages of entertainment and music, featuring live performers, DJs, costume contests and more. I want to thank my Energy 92.7 friends DJ Fernando and Greg the Gay Sportscaster for emceeing this yearís main stage with Heklina of Trannyshack.
Expanded Muni, BART and Taxi service, makes it easy to get to the Castro without driving – there will not be parking.
Our goal is a fun, neighborhood Halloween celebration. All are welcome, but remember the Castro is the heart of our City's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender community. Individuals who are intoxicated or violent will quickly meet San Francisco Police Officers and spend the rest of the evening in Cou

THought I would invite you guys to a crazy lil shindig...feel free to spread the word to folks who will add to the mayhem and make magic! I am lazy, so I just copied and pasted Jamie Kennedy's, er I mean, Jamie Dewolf's post:
SATURDAY Oct. 22nd: Blood Wrestling Block Party
---This Saturday night I'm hosting ALL FEMALE BLOOD
WRESTLING with the badass Queen Blankety Blank at a
block party in downtown Oakland. The party features a
full haunted house, a 1/2 pipe skate ramp open to
everyone, kegs, multiple bars, 420 bake sale, dancing,
DJ's, live bands and is totally FUCKING FREE. However,
the costume is MANDATORY, (if you or a friend shows up
without one, it costs your non-halloween-spirit-having
-ass $20.) FOUR houses have made an evil alliance to
go buck wild on 56th and San Pablo, which is two
blocks from my house. For the frightened, it's NOT a
scary part of Oakland, as it's really almost
Emeryville, right off the 80 Freeway.
---Schedule and info is below. Sounds like a wild time
and I'm mighty excited about the blood wrestling.
!! LADIES, IF YOU WANT TO WRESTLE !! I know there's
plenty of scrappers out there, or girls who just plain
enjoy the joke. NO it's not real blood for fucks sake
and you get a buncha free goodies if you get in the
ring. Grand Prize is a huge bottle of Wild Turkey
Whiskey. NO MEN ALLOWED to wrestle, no biting, hair
pulling, eye gouging, or weapons. There'll be a ref
and the ladies will have security escort them to and
from the ring. It's gonna be some ruckusy fun shit.
For you brave badasses, please hit me up at tongueartillery [at] yahoo.com before saturday...come on, you know you
wanna try it at least ONCE...
