UCSF To Pay Fine For Animal Rights Violations
SAN FRANISCO -- University of California San Francisco will pay one of the largest fines for animal rights violations in history.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture had charged UCSF for 75 counts of animal welfare violations.
Now, the university will pay $92,000 for creating an atmosphere where employees are afraid to report complaints and several other charges.
UCSF settled the case Friday just days before formal hearings were scheduled to begin.

WOULD YOU LIKE A BEAUTIFUL TREE IN FRONT OF YOUR HOME?
Do you live between 20th and 26th, and Grandview and Dolores?
Your Noe Valley Neighbors are organizing a tree planting in the neighborhood with Friends of the Urban Forest. Having more trees on your block will:
• Help reduce pollution
• Reduce energy costs
• Increase your property value
• Beautify the neighborhood
• Block wind and absorb noise
• Strengthen your community/build spirit
The cost per tree ($150) includes: the tree itself, help on choosing an appropriate species you like, checking for utility locations, processing city permits, planting supplies, removing and hauling away the concrete, auguring the soil, experienced volunteers to help you plant, a two-month post-planting survey, and an 18-month tree care visit. We are planning to plant these trees before the end of the year, so sign up now!
If you are interested in participating and/or knowing more about the program, please email me.

# Clown Conservatory "Window on the Work"
Thu Sep 29 2:30-3:30 Pay what you want

There's a new class full of clowns at the San Francisco School for
Circus Arts' Clown Conservatory. Thirteen first year clowns studying
juggling, mime, commedia dell'arte, dance, stiltwalking... what are
they thinking?

The Clown Conservatory needs your help! Clowns cannot live without an
audience. The Clown Conservatory has many shows throughout the year,
some (like this one) are during the afternoons and are what they call
a "window on the work." It's an opportunity to see what the newest
class clowns have been up to, and what it's like to study at the
Clown Conservatory.

Come over to the Circus Center at 755 Frederick (accross from Kezar
Stadium) this Thursday the 29th, pay what you want, and get an early
start to meeting the Clown Class of 2006!

# Raw Food Celebration - Sept 29 4-8pm CRUNCH 1000 Van Ness

# Radical Love workshop w/ Wendy-O Matik
Thu Sep 29 7PM Change Makers 6536 Telegraph @ 66th
Oakland Ca 94609 5106552405
http://www.changemakersforwomen.com
(for singles, couples or more...)
What better time to talk about radical love, or the right to love who we want, how we want, and as many as we want? Loving openly and freely in these times, whether you are straight or queer, is a brave political act. We have been conditioned by outdated social norms that limit our perceptions and shackle us to unhealthy cycles of dissatisfying relationships. Yet we also live in a time when we can choose our gender and redefine our sexual identities. Don?t we then have the right to decide what kind of relationship best suits our lifestyle? Declare yourself a revolutionary of the heart. Find out how you can expand your potential to love, transform your lifestyle, and together we can threaten the social forces of patriarchy!

Make no mistake, Redefining Our Relationships is not about the pros and cons of monogamy versus non-monogamy. This is a daring and provocative how-to guide book on radically defined relationships and alternative lifestyles. Available at Change Makers $12.00

* "Wendy-O Matik delivers a meditation and a manifesto on the alternatives to monogamy. She shows people who feel hemmed in by exclusive partnering the route to healthy and responsible openness," writes Professor Mike Hout, Department of Sociology, UC Berkeley.
* "Wendy-O tackles a touchy topic with clarity and creativity. She is wise beyond her years. This guide teaches you how you can have it all. I gave the jealousy tips to my lover immediately," states Annie Sprinkle, Post-porn Star turned Certified Sexologist.
* "Wendy-O Matik's how-to guide for the emotional roadblocks and liberatory possibilities of polyamory reads like a punk rock Ann Landers channeling Emma Goldman and Victoria Woodhull." Hakim Bey, author of The Temporary Autonomous Zone, Ontological Anarchism, Poetic Terrorism (Autonomedia Press).

Wendy-O Matik is a Bay area based freelance writer, published poet, and radical performance artist. She is committed to reaching out to new readers at non-traditional venues, pushing the boundaries of where literature is normally not seen and heard. Visit her website at http://www.wendyomatik.com

# Thursday, September 29, 7 PM: Stanford Law School Student Animal Legal
Defense Fund presents: "McLibel: Two Worlds Collide" (1997), a
documentary about the fast-food giant's libel suit against
anti-McDonald's activists. In Room 280A, Stanford Law School. Open to
the public. Admission is free. More info: Salena Copeland
(salena [at] stanford.edu). http://events.stanford.edu/events/67/6739/ For
a map, go to http://campus-map.stanford.edu/campus_map/index.jsp and
search for "law school" as the Building Name. More maps are at
http://www.stanford.edu/home/visitors/maps.html

For info on this film, see
http://www.spannerfilms.net/?lid=161

McLIBEL is the inside story of how a single father and a part-time bar
worker took on the McDonald's Corporation. Filmed over three years, the
documentary follows Helen Steel and Dave Morris as they are transformed
from anonymous campaigners against the fast food giant into unlikely
global heroes. Struggling to defend themselves in the longest trial in
English history, the pair face infiltration by spies, secret meetings
with corporate executives, 40,000 pages of background reading and a
visit from Ronald McDonald. Using interviews with witnesses and
reconstructions of key moments in court, the film examines the main
issues of the trial - nutrition, animals, advertising, employment, the
environment - and the implications for freedom of speech.

McLIBEL is not about hamburgers. It is about the remorseless power of
multinational corporations.

# Vegan Film:The Witness Fri Sep 30 7:00Pm Free

Free Screening of the documentart film THE WITNESS.

How does a construction contractor from a tough Brooklyn neighborhood
become an impassioned animal activist?
In the award-winning documentary THE WITNESS, Eddie Lama explains how
he feared and avoided animals for most of his life, until the love of
a kitten opened his heart, inspiring him to rescue abandoned animals,
become a vegetarian, and ultimately, to bring his message of
compassion to the streets of New York.

With humor and sincerity, Eddie tells the story of his remarkable
change in consciousness, sharing along the way some of the shocking
realities of the meat and fur industries.

Featuring the song "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan, this is a story of
beauty and transcendence in the face of tragedy and despair.

Event starts at the Peace Cafe in the Red Vic before the film. Film
starts at 7:30PM.
The Peace cafe serves vegan foods.
This film is free, cafe extra if you want to eat, drink, have a snack.

No, it's not a banned book yet, but the list of cutting-edge
contributors editor Russ Kick has assembled for the notorious
DisInformation's foray into all things sexual, and we do pretty much
mean all, means that it might be only a matter of time before some
small-town preacher takes umbrage! So join us to celebrate forbidden
knowledge while supporting the Center for Sex & Culture, which
collects banned sex books (and all the rest of them, too) for its
library, making them available to scholars and everybody else. (Who
knows, we might make enough at the door to buy a copy of Lynne
Cheney's very rare, practically banned lesbian novel!)

# BURNING MAN ON FILM

2 Great Burning Man films coming to 2 Great Festivals!

We have wonderful news about 2 of our favorite all-time Burning Man documentaries! Purple Productions' "Dust Devils" will be having its North American festival premiere at the San Francisco World Film Festival (SWIFT) at the end of this month (*bonus! it's programmed along with an outstanding short on Reverend Billy called "Preacher with an Unknown God"). PLUS! Gone Off Deep's "Burning Man: Beyond Black Rock" will be having its official bigtime festival World Premiere at the prestigious AFI Fest in Hollywood in early November.

This is extremely good news for all Burners worldwide, as each of these films does a wonderful job of dispelling a lot of the negative myths about Burning Man and educating the public about our special little corner of the universal culture. As many of you know, Burning Man's ongoing existence and especially our community's connection through the regionals network greatly depend on a better understanding (and therefore less fear) of what we are about from the general public...films like these can bring the true story to people who have never been to Burning Man and will likely never go, and have already mentally filed it away as "like a Woodstock" or "a big rave in the desert" or "some Pagan hippie thing."

SF World Film Festival:
"Dust Devils" and "Preacher with an Unknown God" SWIFT screenings:

Friday Sept 30th 10:45PM
Cine Arts Empire Theater
85 West Portal Ave, San Francisco
(screens with Rob Van Alkemade's short, "Preacher With An Unknown God")

**Friday Night Post-Screening celebration event
at The Beach Chalet 1000 Great Highway

Doors at midnight with DJ Laird and other special guests. Tix to the event available with screening ticket purchase through Ticketweb.com or at the door. Put on your playa best!

&

Sat. October 1st 12noon
Cine Arts Empire Theater 85 West Portal Ave
(screens with Richard Roll's "DownDog" and a 5min. Yoga class)

Tickets and passes to the festival (which is chock full of great films, btw, including a Jeff Buckley documentary I'm preparing for with a full box of kleenex in my pocket) can be be purchased through TicketWeb (http://www.ticketweb.com or
866.468.7619) The festival tells us that the weekend night screenings usually sell out, so get 'em early.

+++++++

"Beyond Black Rock" screenings at AFI Fest in Los Angeles are TBA, but will be in first week of November... more on those later in the JRS.

We're hoping to send a strong message to these festival programmers that they have (finally!) done a good thing by bringing in Burning Man films... so let's fill up these screenings and make sure every press monkey and distributor there sees and hears an overwhelming enthusiastic response!

For those of you unable to catch these films at the festivals, both are available (exclusively) from the marketplace on our fine website, and both come highly recommended.

http://www.burningman.com/marketplace

# You may or may not have heard of this amazing film before, but you will walk away convinced that this is the coolest movie you've seen is a long long time.

Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In Presents DARK DAYS

Near New York City's Penn Station, squatters have been living for years next to the Amtrak tracks underground. Dark Days is an unromanticized and fascinating glimpse of the lives of a community of homeless people surviving in a train tunnel in Manhattan. A movie that takes you down below the streets into the heart of NYC's subterranean shantytowns. The squatters themselves served as the cast and crew of this independent movie with a non-existent budget. It won three major awards at Sundance. Rico is hosting.

PLUS thrilling and funny short films, an intermission, and great company.

Friday September 30th, 8:00pm
Railroad Tracks at Fair Ave, Santa Cruz

BRING lawn chairs, blankets, pillows, friends, wine, & food to share for intermission. Donations are greatly appreciated and directly support the project and the Revolutionary Garden Society who sponsors Guerilla Drive-In.

SANTA CRUZ GUERILLA DRIVE-IN is an outdoor movie theatre under the stars that springs up unexpectedly in the fields and industrial wastelands. Beyond showing great movies and bringing a broad community together, part of our mission is helping reclaim public space and transforming our urban environment into the joyful playground it should be.

SUBURBAN WASTELAND LOCATION: S on Hwy 17 to Hwy 1, Hwy 1 north to Mission St, L on Fair Ave after Feral Donuts, walk a short way along the RR tracks to the right.

Today, more than ever, Farm Sanctuary needs your support and contributions.Farm Sanctuary (http://www.farmsanctuary.org) rescues and protects farmed animals for who are in desperate need of help.  And now because of the devastation along the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Katrina, even more animals are in need of rescuing.  Just last week, Farm Sanctuary rescued 725 chickens and is caring for them at their NY shelter. Soon after receiving these wonderful feathered creatures, their health has improved exponentially!

By joining us on October 1st for San Francisco’s Walk for Farm Animals, you will be helping us save thousands of animals from egregious cruelty and suffering. So please join us by putting on your walking shoes and take steps toward compassion for farm animals today by participating in San Francisco's Walk For Farm Animals: Saturday, October 1st

# BURNING MAN ON FILM Sat. October 1st 12noon

+++++++

# aturday, October 1, 6 p.m. Howard Lyman, The Mad Cowboy to Speak in Marin
Howard Lyman, the fourth generation cattle rancher who won't eat meat, author of MAD COWBOY and the new book NO MORE BULL will be speaking at a free meeting of Marin Vegetarian Education Group at 6 PM at the Town Center Shopping Center's Community Room in Corte Madera.
This is a free event and a wonderful chance to invite your friends, co-workers, and neighbors to hear an entertaining speaker and watch a short, powerful film.
The Community Room is located on the south end of the property in the office building at 770 Tamalpais Drive, Suite 201. The door is next to the entrance to The Good Guys that faces the center, not the one that faces the parking lot. There is an elevator to the second floor. Come hear about Mad Cow Disease and what the government does not want you to know about common practices in the meat industry.
Howard Lyman's new book, No More Bull! includes more than 100 delicious vegan recipes from terrific home chefs and professional chefs. The subtitle of the book is The Mad Cowboy Targets America's Worst Enemy: Our Diet. The book is entertaining, informative, and full of great recipes, so look for a copy at bookstores this month.

# Sat., Oct. 1, 7:00 pm Andres Edwards and Sim Van der Ryn
Book Passage Bookstore 51 Tamal Vista Blvd., Corte Madera, CA 94925 Info: (415) 927-0960
Join Andres Edwards and Sim Van der Ryn as they discuss their new books, The Sustainability Revolution: Portrait of a Paradigm Shift and Design for Life: The Architecture of Sim Van der Ryn. As an educator, author, media designer and environmental systems consultant, Edwards's work provides a comprehensive primer on the history, evolution and future of the movement toward sustainability. Sharing his years of experience as a teacher and using his building designs as examples, Van der Ryn shows us that buildings are not objects but organisms, and cities are not machines but complex ecosystems. Design for Life illustrates how Van der Ryn came to see the shifting patterns in nature and how these patterns profoundly affect how people live and work in the structures we build.

http://sanfrancisco.tribe.net/event/2d4de85b-89a1-4b2f-b6be-407e4fff64e4

A dance party and campaign rally to benefit the GE Free Sonoma initiative campaign will rock the Sebastopol Community Center on Saturday, October 8. Organizers promise an evening of music, knowledge and community empowerment.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for an evening of music, laughs and noted speakers. Admission is $15, and only $10 for those who join the list of volunteers assisting with the GE Free campaign. All proceeds go to the campaign.

Performers are donating their energy and their time. The musical lineup includes Sol Horizon, Carnaval Spirit, DJ Dragonfly, and Patric Optimystic Music, with a special appearance by Swami Beyondananda.

Samplings of gourmet food and coffee will fill the tables of the main hall, along with a beer and wine bar. Knowledge about Genetically Modified food and the GE Free Initiative will also be there in abundance. Speakers will include Larry Robinson, Mayor of Sebastopol; Patricia Dines, activist and author of The Organic Guide book series; and Betty Biodiesel. The startling documentary The Future of Food will show several times during the day.

The GE Free initiative, when passed, will set in place a 10-year moratorium on Genetically modified food crops. At this event, issues of crop contamination, seed integrity, health and the corporate control of food will be discussed.

This is a dance party with a purpose, and it is sponsored by Harmony Festival, Green Mary, North Bay EcoFest, Daily Acts, and Archer Audio.

Sebastopol Community Center is located at 390 Morris St
101 North to Santa Rosa, West on 12 to Sebastopol.

Loaded with fresh produce, staple goods, and healthy snacks, the People's Grocery Mobile Market is a truck converted into a grocery store on wheels that travels through West Oakland selling food. People's Grocery staff, volunteers and school groups maintain urban gardens. Food produced at these gardens is harvested for sale on the Mobile Market and is also foraged by neighbors and school children.
