ACTIVISM: Evaluating Charities http://www.charitynavigator.org

For those considering giving to the Katrina victims, there's a great website
at http://www.charitynavigator.org . It not only tells you about charities that are
legitimate, but it also has reviews on how well those charities manage your
donations! Instead of donating to the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina
victims, I found a highly-rated charity called AmeriCares.

Why did I choose one over the other? The Red Cross has about 9% of its
donations going toward administration and fundraising costs. For every
dollar the Red Cross gets, they spend 18 cents to get that dollar. In
contrast, AmeriCares has only 1.1% of its donations going toward
administration and fundraising costs. Best of all, for every dollar that's
donated to AmeriCares, they spend only 1 cent to get that dollar! We all
should be frugal and make sure that those to whom we give are frugal with
our money as well!

# For over thirty-five years his design, planning, teaching and public leadership has advanced the viability, acceptance, and knowledge base of ecological principles and practices in architecture and planning. The Environmental Breakthrough Sim Van der Ryn, Architect

Somewhere in the last century, architecture lost its soul.  Modern culture developed the wealth, the power, and the technology to create structures that once seemed impossible.  While the larger-than –life skyscrapers and the coldly post-modern structures of our time do inspire a detached sense of awe and wonder, very few appear to have the qualities that truly move us….
When was the last time you were moved to tears by a building, or did not want to leave a building you were in because the place touched you at such a deep level?  When was the last time you shivered, ecstatic, in a manmade place that tugged at something deep inside of you?
Buildings are not objects; they are organisms.  Cities are not mechanical assemblies; they are ecosystems.  Through ecological design, our buildings and cities can become more fully integrated with nature.  Like organisms, they can produce their own energy, and consume and recycle their own wastes without polluting.  Design can show us the connection between nature’s cycles, the living and the built environment….
Our Global crisis is also a design crisis as civilization shifts from design processes and products formed in the image of the machine to design based on the forms and processes of the intricately ordered web of life.  I lay out the characteristics of the emerging integral worldview and integral design.  As Gandhi said, “We must be the change we want to see.” This is the essence of actively living with hope. -Sim Van der Ryn

Sim Van der Ryn is the president of Van der Ryn Architects, a Northern California firm known for its work in sustainable architecture.  He taught architecture and design at the University of California, Berkeley, for over 30 years, inspiring a new generation to create buildings and communities that are sensitive to place, climate and the flow of human interactions.  Appointed California State Architect in the 1970s by then-Governor Jerry Brown, Van der Ryn introduced the nation’s first energy-efficient government building projects.

# Ross Mirkarimi's Third Friday Art Opening Friday, September 16 5-7:30PM
City Hall 1 Carlton B Goodlet Place, Room 282 Polk @ Grove
On Friday, September 16th, 2005, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi hosts the monthly Third Friday’s Art Reception in his City Hall office, Room 282. This month’s featured artist is Sara Thustra.
Sara Thustra is a San Francisco-based artist who specializes in site-specific installations. He is a political artist and activist whose work reflects our personal struggles. His installation for Supervisor Mirkarimi's City Hall Office poses and tackles the question "What would you say to all of our city representatives in three sentences or less?" Sara gathered resident's responses by walking the streets of San Francisco, engaging strangers, and by talking with friends. This stunning display of paintings, words, and installations leaves us with a powerful and creative look at what are arguably two things most effecting our lives: our government and our personal struggles.

String Band Contest / Crafts Fair at the Berkeley Farmers' Market — Twenty high-spirited old-time string bands will compete for agricultural prizes (Berkeley Farmers' Market gift certificates) in the Berkeley Farmers' Market String Band Contest. The contest will start with a youth showcase (last year, about 20 young folks ranging in age from 7 to 17 fiddled and strummed onstage), followed by the string band contest with 20 bands. In addition, California's own national treasure, Kenny Hall, with his fierce, inimitable approach to the fiddle and mandolin and his thousand-song repertoire, will lead an open jam session. It's going to be intense both on stage and off: superb playing, great listening, fantastic dancing. The string band contest is the cornerstone event of the 2005 Berkeley Old Time Music Convention-a rollicking four-day festival featuring Appalachian music and dance. Bands from San Diego, Seattle, Mendocino, Fresno, and other outposts of civilization will strut their stuff at the contest. The crafts fair will feature beautiful and useful handmade gifts by local artists and crafts people. The Berkeley Old Time Music Convention is co-sponsored by the Ecology Center, Freight & Salvage, Ashkenaz, and KPFA. Location: Saturday Berkeley Farmers' Market, Center St. at MLK Jr. Way, Berkeley. Time: 11am - 3pm. Cost: Free. Info: 510-548-3333, bfm [at] ecologycenter.org , http://www.ecologycenter.org/bfm/index.html

# San Rafael KFC Protest October 7th from 5:00-6:00 PM
We need your help to speak on behalf of chickens being tortured by KFC!
Please join Hannah Tai, PETA and Bay Area Vegetarians on Friday,
October 7th from 5:00-6:00 PM to protest KFC at 555 2nd Street, San
Rafael, CA 94901 (Marin County). *Please note new location*. For more
information, please email Hannah (hannahtai [at] hotmail.com).
Please come out and show people that the secret in KFC's secret recipe
is the torture of millions of chickens.
KFC is responsible for continuing a long history of cruelty to the
animals they raise and slaughter. PETA has asked repeatedly for
compliance in instigating humane practices within their company, and
KFC has refused to make these changes.
Please join our worldwide campaign against KFC by attending this protest.
You can visit http://www.KentuckyFriedCruelty.com for more information.
Signs and leaflets provided. If you can't make this date, please note
that we are attempting to make this a monthly protest usually
happening on the first Friday of the month. Please check the Bay Area
Vegetarian event calendar or email host to confirm.
Please see BAV's schedule for other monthly KFC demos and other animal
welfare issues. http://www.bayareaveg.org Thanks for all of your help!

"September Surprise, October Surprise:
Everything You Think You Know About 9/11 Is Wrong --

featuring Barbara Honegger

Sunday, October 9, 2001 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
at Round Table Pizza
Banquet Room on 2nd Floor
5160 Geary Blvd. (at 16th Ave.)
San Francisco, California

Barbara Honegger is a senior military affairs journalist and
founding member of the International 9/11 Truth Alliance.
Her talk will compliment Jim Hoffman's September
presentation and feature a scientific investigation / data
analysis of the 9/11 Pentagon attacks. Honegger was the
first to expose the meaning and central importance of the
multiple-hijack-scenario anti-terror emergency response
exercises and wargames being conducted by the Bush
Administration on Sept. 11th. Her 9/11 contributions are
prominently credited and featured in "Crossing the Rubicon"
by Michael Ruppert and "Inside Job" by Jim Marrs.

Ms. Honegger served as a White House Policy Analyst in the
1980's and was the first public resignation of conscience
from the Reagan-Bush Administration. She is the author of
"October Surprise", the first book to document the secret
deal between the 1980 Reagan-Bush Campaign and the radical
Islamist Khomeini regime to delay the release of the U.S.
hostages in Iran until after the 1981 presidential
inauguration of Ronald Reagan. Exposure of the "October
Surprise" ignited a major Congressional investigation.

Ms. Honegger earned the first accredited U.S. graduate
degree in Consciousness Studies/Experimental Parapsychology,
from John F. Kennedy University (1981). She holds a B.A.
in Communications/Honors Writing from Stanford University
(1969), with expertise in the neuropsychology of human
and nonhuman primate communication.

Houmanesh at a Federal Immigration Court Hearing in San

The Judge postponed his final decision so that additional

served and Mohsen
Hourmanesh will finally be granted his well earned U.S.

# GI Rights Hotline Training October 15
A crucial element to slowing the military machine is helping individual GIs get out of the military!  As CCCO has done since 1948, we are supporting individuals in their resistance and opposition to war.  In particular, we are standing with a group of people —GI’s whose questioning and resistance are increasing and becoming better known

The GI Rights hotline is staffed by a network of organizations throughout the United States and in Germany.  In 2004 we received 32,000 calls from people who needed help obtaining discharge from the military.  Increasingly, people are also using email to contact us and we sent about 3,000 emails in response to email queries.

The hotline provides accurate, comprehensive, and objective information on draft registration, military discharges, civil rights in the military, and involuntary activation and deployment of military personnel.  The work we do and the information we disseminate are known to enlisted people in numbers far greater then the thousands with whom we communicate personally.

We are seeking additional military counselors to volunteer on the Hotline.  Tasks include answering live phone calls, returning phone messages, responding to email inquiries, and making referrals to relevant organizations and individuals.  Volunteers make an initial one- year commitment of at least 2 hours of service per week.

CCCO will be holding a GI Rights volunteer training on
Saturday, October 15, 2005 9am – 5pm
405 14th St., Suite #205 Oakland, CA
Pr-registration required by September 26
For more information or to register for the training, call
510-465-1617 or 888-231-2226
Or email steve [at] objector.org
http://www.objector.org/gitraining.html
The training will provide an overview of all the discharges, AWOL practices and regulations, and  legal and ethical issues in hotline counseling.
