# It's on:  The Comcast settlement that's been negotiated behind closed doors will be heard in the City's Rules Committee tomorrow, Wednesday, at 12 noon.

*** The hearing will be at 12 noon, not at 10 am, as we previously reported ***

This may be the ONLY public hearing on the Comcast deal -
a bad deal which will affect SF residents for the next 4 years!

Community organizations are opposed to the settlement and 4-year contract extension, which would leave SF with 4 more years of a bad 40 year-old agreement in exchange for a measly $3.5 million dollars from Comcast.
To learn more about what's wrong with the settlement go to:
http://www.media-alliance.org/article.php?story=20050617130532428

Comcast posted a 64% increase in profits! They can afford to give more. We cannot afford a contract that starves public access and ignores real consumer and worker protections!

1) COME to the hearing, bring others:  Wed Aug 3rd, 12 pm - City Hall, Legislative Chamber, 2nd Floor

2) CALL your Supervisor and the 3 "Swing Votes":  Peskin, Maxwell & Alioto-Pier

Peskin          415-554-7450,  email: Aaron.Peskin [at] sfgov.org
Maxwell 415-554-7670, email: Sophie.Maxwell [at] sfgov.org
Alioto-Pier     415-554-7752, email: Michela.Alioto-Pier [at] sfgov.org
(other Supes' contact info is below)

Express your concern about this settlement.  ALL the Supes are eager to hear from their constituents.
Ask Supervisors to continue negotiating for a better agreement:
Comcast can afford it, plus a one year extension is standard practice.

We want to see a public report of the Community Needs Assessment meetings the City held on the cable franchise before a vote takes place.

3) FORWARD this email to other orgs and individuals, help get the word out!

Many thanks for your help in safeguarding our communities' interests.

pending diminishment of petroleum supplies will be discussed. Laguna
Farm's Scott Mathieson will demonstrate his farm's use of alternative
energies such as wind and solar and veggie oil to power tractors and

# Ask a Scientist - Genomes, from Human to Neanderthal Wed Aug 3 7-9 pm Free
Until very recently, the only DNA recoverable from extinct species was from the mitochondria -- the cell's energy producing organelles. While mtDNA reveals much about our evolutionary family tree, it's nuclear DNA that tells the real story of life. Now, with the exciting news that scientists at the DOE Joint Genome Institute have successfully sequenced nuclear DNA from an extinct cave bear species, that story is about to get even more interesting.
Speaker: Dr. Eddy Rubin, director of the DOE Joint Genome Institute
Ask a Scientist is a new and different kind of lecture series. If you love watching Nova specials and reading Scientific American at the doctor's office, then this event is for you. Enjoy food, drinks, socializing, and conversation about the universe's most fascinating mysteries!

# Falluja Presented by Steve Zeltzer 415-641-4440
Wednesday, August 3 at 7:30 pm Falluja April 2004
Japanese video documentarian Toshikuni Doi was in Falluja two weeks after the U.S. invasion. He was one of the few international journalists able to show the reality of the invasion. Falluja has become a symbol of the resistance movement against the occupation by the U.S. In April 2004, U.S. forces invaded Falluja with several thousand U.S. soldiers. About 730 people were killed and 2800 were injured in the siege in one month. Doi interviews medical workers and teachers as well as people in the community about this horrendous assault and the cost of it for the people of Falluja. Why did Falluja become the base of the resistance against the occupation? How did the U.S. forces attack? Who fought against them, and what injuries and damages did the people suffer? This important film exposes all this. Only 10 days after the U.S. attack, Toshikuni Doi went to Falluja and investigated the site. Footage was recorded in August 2003 (4 months after the siege) and in May 2004.
Before and after the film, everyone's invited to indulge in our Humanist Coffee House.
390 27th St Oakland, between Broadway and Telegraph.

# Doctors Against The Bomb: "Helen's War" and "Last Laugh"
Wed Aug 3 8pm FREE! Donations gladly accepted

*** Doctors Against The Bomb: August 3, 8 pm ***
Rx Gallery, 132 Eddy Street @ Mason, San Francisco
"Helen's War, Portrait of a Dissident" with "Last Laugh" by Louis Borgenicht, MD
http://www.simnuke.org/gallery.html
http://www.rxgallery.com
FREE! Donations Gladly Accepted

By special permission, the Simnuke Art Exhibit is doing a one-time
screening of "Helen's War: Portrait of a Dissident," a film about
Helen Caldicott by her niece, Anna. We are lucky enough to combine
it with "Last Laugh," a talk on Nuclear Humor by pediatrician, anti-
nuclear activist, and PSR Board Member Louis Borgenicht.

About Helen's War
-----------------
With exclusive access, Caldicott's filmmaker niece, Anna Broinowski,
followed her pugnacious aunt during a year-long road trip through the
United States to promote her latest book, The New Nuclear Danger-
George W. Bush's Military Industrial Complex. Playing
a reluctant cynic to her idealistic aunt, Broinowski challenges
Caldicott as she battles spin-savvy neo-conservative rivals and
attempts to raise money for her left-wing think-tank. But can
Caldicott win back the media, and inspire the huge groundswell of
protest she did in the 1980s? Helen's War asks whether pacifist
dissenters have a place in today's world.
http://www.roninfilms.com.au/feature/2397875830
http://www.nuclearpolicy.org/

About Last Laugh
----------------
This multimedia presentation includes posters, bumper stickers,
parodies, official government propaganda (e.g. a three minute film),
music and other representations of our nuclear culture. They are
culled from the collection of Louis Borgenicht, MD a nuclear pack rat
for years.
The Last Laugh explores the utility of humor in dealing with the
incomprehensible and concludes with a quote from write Robert Stone:
"Laughter is primarily a moral response. It is a rejection of evil, a
renunciation of chaos and an affirmation of balance and soundness."
Dr. Borgenicht is a pediatrician from SLC, Utah and has been a member
of Physicians for Social Responsibility for twenty-five years. He is
currently on the Board of Directors.

About The Simnuke Art Exhibit
-----------------------------
Over the last sixty years, people all over the world have lived with
the looming threat of nuclear arms. For the artists exhibiting in the
Simnuke Art Exhibit, this struggle expresses itself through scathing
commentary and moving artwork condemning the nuclear arms race. We
are privileged to have Yosuke Yamahata's Nagasaki Journey Photos
taken the day after the Nagasaki bombing displayed alongside works by
Michael Light, Carole Gallagher, and Richard Ross.

The art of the Simnuke Art Exhibit is co-curated by Sasha Harris-
Cronin and Max Carlson and has 20 artists from the United States and
Japan. The exhibit pieces will range from photography to kinetic
sculpture, from humorous statements to solemn exposés. In addition,
there will be an exhibit of government documents from the Prelinger
Library tracing the history of the atomic era in public policy.

The artists in the Simnuke Art Exhibit include: Carole Gallagher,
Michael Light, Richard Ross, Aaron Ximm, Yosuke Yamahata, Bryan Cole,
Robert Dohrmann, Joy Garnett, Jenne Giles, Mark Henson, Garret Izumi,
Tracy Jacobs, Kerry Loewen, Yoshiko McFarland, Yumiko Oda, Astrid
Olafsen, Megan Prelinger, Aryana Farsai Roxborough, Corrine Schulze,
Elin O'Hara Slavick, and Jeff Young.

Getting Ready for Climate Change & the End of Cheap Oil
Post Carbon Santa Cruz welcomes Dave Room
co-author "Relocalize Now! Getting Ready for Climate Change & the End of Cheap Oil"
Thursday, August 4th 6pm, Vets Hall
846 Front Street, Santa Cruz.
Event is wheelchair accessible.
Tickets at the door- $5-$15, sliding scale.
Students free. No one turned away.
Dave Room and Post Carbon Institute are dedicated to educating and galvanizing communities so that they may better prepare for an energy-constrained world. Dave explores ways to reinvent what we consider to be normal life so that we may more safely navigate the troubled waters of climate change and the end of cheap fossil fuels. Learn the importance of withdrawing support from big energy, big corporations and big banks that leave us helpless without the steady flow of cheap manufactured goods from far distant places. Our water, food, shelter, energy, and many of our manufactured goods will need to be produced more locally and within the energy constraints that are currently tightening around the globe.
Dave Room, Director of North American Operations, Post Carbon Institute: Dave is a social entrepreneur with a strong interest and background in environmental affairs and the use of technology for communications and collaboration. Prior to Post Carbon Institute, he founded a small business importing beverage concentrates from the Philippines and before that a software company that developed a peer-to-peer application for sharing digital information among media properties. Previously, he has also been an environmental and management consultant, intranet developer, and technical sales engineer. He has a Masters in Engineering Economic Systems and a B.S, in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

# Day of Action to Defeat Prop 73! Saturday, August 6 10:00 AM

Join The Campaign for Teen Safety, the San Francisco Democratic Party, and the Young Democrats of America for a day of walking precincts and getting out the vote to defeat Prop 73!

The San Francisco voter base is critical to the Democratic turnout in the special election and Prop 73 is the ONLY proposition on the ballot that directly affects the lives of young people. Walk with us on August 6th to protect the health of California’s teens!

WHEN: Saturday, August 6, 2005 at 10 a.m.

WHERE: Holiday Inn Golden Gateway

Conference Room

WHY: Protect California’s teens by turning out San Francisco Voters to vote NO on Prop 73 this November 8th.

We will have a brief training on tips for precinct walking, hit the pavement in target San Francisco districts and turn out democratic voters for the upcoming election.

What is Prop 73?

Proposition 73 would amend the state constitution to require health care providers to notify the parents of young women under the age of 18 before providing abortion services. Once a parent has been notified, a mandatory waiting period of 48 hours is required before the doctor can provide an abortion. Only those teens faced with a medical emergency or those who obtain a “judicial bypass” are exempt from the parental notification requirement.

Proposition 73 would serve as a blatant intrusion by the government into private, personal family matters. It places our most vulnerable teens in jeopardy of severe health consequences such as delaying medical attention or finding their own solutions on the internet or elsewhere. It is a one-size fits all constitutional amendment that brings government into our families’ most personal and sensitive decisions.

============================================
BACKGROUND
The Bay Area’s Livermore Lab is one of the three national laboratories
that serve as the brain of the U.S. nuclear weapons complex, which today
is modernizing and developing nuclear weapons to support U.S. wars of
empire.

August 6 and 9, 2005 mark the 60th anniversaries of the atomic bombings
of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States. Join with thousands of
people at four central US nuclear weapons sites to call for an end to
the development and production of nuclear warheads.

In the Bay Area, the Livermore Lab continues to contaminate the water,
air and soil. Over 1 million curies of airborne radiation have leaked
from the site. That is roughly equal to the amount of radiation
deposited in the bombing of Hiroshima. The Dept. of Energy declared the
fifty-mile radius surrounding the facility as the affected population.
This includes over 7 million people from San Francisco, to Stockton, to
San Jose. The storage and use of nuclear materials at Livermore Lab
continues to increase despite safety and security issues. The limit for
plutonium at Livermore Lab has just been doubled to 3,080 pounds --
enough for 300 nuclear bombs! Plutonium was recently found on site to be
absurdly stored in paint cans and food cans.

In Iraq, they never found nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction,
yet the daily reality of death and destruction continues, sparked by the
Bush administration's invasion and fueled by the ongoing U.S. military
occupation. A majority of people in this nation now oppose the war, but
the White House and most members of Congress are resisting the only
solution to the crisis: bring the troops home immediately. We will send
our message loud and clear to decision-makers and the public at large:
End the war in Iraq, End the threat of nuclear annihilation!

We found the missing weapons of mass destruction. On August 6, we will
take our voices to the active nuclear weapons sites across the country.
We demand an end to US nuclear weapons development, production and
testing. We demand an end to wars of empire and an end to nuclear
excuses for war.

NO NUKES! NO WARS!

Rainforest Action Network - Greenpeace - Earth First!

Join us in a forest east of the Cascades for labor day weekend! Bring
all your musician friends for some wild sounds around the campfire.
There will also be many workshops and trainings: tree-climbing,

About the forest: Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington State
approved a plan to log 2,500 acres of federal lands that were burned by
the Fischer Fire in August of 2004. The plan calls for logging in
old-growth forest reserves, and for building or re-building over 15
miles of road. So lawsuits have been filed and loggers are logging as
fast as possible to ensure the courts have no control over the hauling

# Once in a Lifetime Opportunity in Wash, DC - September 10, 11, 12 Sometimes the Universe reveals "opportunities" to all of us in the most mind-boggling of ways. Please look at what a friend just now sent that will be happening in DC on 9/11 (from 9/10 - 9/12). This friend will be flying in from the Pacific Northwest to be here for this event. No doubt, many others will be doing the same.... Please mark your calendars, save your dollars for the trip (give up the beers if you must), as well as a few days vacation time. The event in DC on 9/11 has just suddenly now grown to mind-blowing proportions. They talk about hundreds attending? Mark my words - thousands upon thousands - will be there: http://www.thepeacealliance.org/events/sept_conf_05.htm 911 - inside job.
