Urgent: Don't Let Nabolom Close

by Friends of Nabolom
There will be a Town Hall Meeting, THIS MONDAY, August 1, 7-9 p.m. at
Nabolom (Russell & College) to discuss how the community can help save
the bakery.

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO YOUR LISTS

Dear everyone:

Nabolom Bakery, one of the oldest collective businesses in Berkeley,
will close September 1 unless they raise $50,000 in sustainer pledges.

In the midst of all the international tragedies we all work on, it must
seem strange that I am putting out an urgent appeal for a Berkeley
bakery. But I feel it is really important that we support the
institutions that have supported us over the years.

Nabolom has always been there for lefty groups. I first ran into them at
the big Livermore actions in 1982 and 1983, where they gave great
pastries for those early morning blockade-a-thons and also sent a number
of their collective members to jail. They have given thousands of
dollars worth of pastries to events from Sparks Fly! to draft counselor
trainings. They lent their space for one of the first ISM-NorCal report
backs in 2002. They hang community artists' work in the space, let local
music groups practice there, and have free WiFi, which I myself use for
many hours every weekend while spending $3.00 or less.

They have provided good jobs with maximum worker control over conditions
to dozens of activists in a lot of different movements.

There will be a Town Hall Meeting, THIS MONDAY, August 1, 7-9 p.m. at
Nabolom (Russell & College) to discuss how the community can help save
the bakery. They are looking for pledges to purchase $500 or $1000
sustainer certificates, which will entitle the bearer to a 10% discount
on all products. I think it would be great if some of us who have
benefited from their generosity, could pool our money to buy one or more
Sustainer Certificates. Right now, they are only accepting pledges; they
are not taking any money unless they have $50,000 in pledges by August 15.

You can call them to pledge or get more info at 510-845-2253. Or go on
by and buy some wonderful danish and talk to them about how it's going.

If you agree with me that community-based worker-owned institutions
should not die in the Bay Area, please pass this appeal on to everyone
you know.

In solidarity,

Kate
