San Francisco's Presidio guest speaker: Bob Bowen

A visual presentation of the story of the Presidio from the days of the 18th century Spanish to the modern era of the 20th century. The focus of this presentation will be the role of the Presidio in a wide variety of events such as the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, and the building of the Golden Gate Bridge. The program concludes with the transition of the Presidio from an active army post to a National Park Service beginning a new era as the only urban national park in the United State. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Bob is very fortunate in being a third generation Presidian, his Grandfather, Father and he were all stationed at the Presidio at various times in the previous century which gives him a particular unique insight and appreciation of the history of the Presidio. He is also a San Francisco City Guide leading tours at The Palace of Fine Art, Art Deco Marina and Downtown Deco.

Television Event: Premier Cable Screening of "Falluja 2004"

This will be the first US cable screening of "Fallujah 2004" by Japanese filmmaker Toshikuni DOI (55 minutes with English subtitles).
Japanese video documentarian Toshikuni DOI was in Fallujah two weeks after the US invasion. He was one of the few international journalists able to show the reality of the cost of the invasion. Fallujah has become a symbol of the resistance movement against the occupation by the US forces. In April 2004, the US forces invaded Fallujah with several thousand US soldiers. About 730 people were killed and 2800 were injured in the siege and attacks by the US military in one month. He interviews medical workers and teachers as well as people in the community about this horrendous assault and the cost of it for the people of Fallujah. # Burning Man in the Hood - a community building summer camp Wed July 20 Hayes Valley
Wednesday, July 27th at 6pm.... there will be a gathering at Koshland Park, on the corner of Page & Buchanan(Lower Haight/ Hayes Valley), to discuss creating a community building summer camp project.

This project is simply an opportunity to create a space to play, make friends, share skills, stories and resources. Think of it as bringing Burning man to the hood. In fact... David Best's Burning Man style Temple is just a few blocks down the street!

The intent is to combine our abilities and imaginations to produce an event, or series of events, as a forum for discovering commonwealth. Often with Burning Man camps and communities in general, they are semi-exclusive circles of friends. This social adventure is about cultural exchange and expanding the circle to include everyone-- youth and elders-- rich and poor.

The camp activities will likely be between August 8th to the 19th, ending in some sort of show. Thus far we have a hip hop dance troupe keen to take part, Kelly's Peeps. They rock hare core and will teach you some moves to impress your playa honey. There will also be hula-hooping, stilt walking, tree house hammocks, potlucks, bedtime stories, plus much more.... and whatever you want to bring to the scene. Maybe we''ll even have an art car/ funky bicycle freak parade. It will be a great way to get prepared for the burn.

Regina Dick-Endrizzi, assistant to Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, and other key people will be attending Wednesday July 27th, and the following day we have a meeting at city hall to share whatever we come up with, so this is a real opportunity to make something happen. Your participation will be greatly appreciated. And please invite anyone you think would be interested.

This is a project of the Action Hero Network, a social-profit organization focused on empowerment and activation. # China Three Gorges video screening and photo show

Space Gallery presents Holding Ground Under Water, a one night only photography exhibit and video screening of footage documenting the population resettlement along the Yangtze River in China's famed Three Gorges.

Between 2001 and 2003, photojournalist and video artist Benjamin Sandler made four separate trips to the Three Gorges region in China. He traveled the length of the river, visiting large cities and small towns due to be affected by construction of the Three Gorges Dam. Along the way he conducted numerous impromptu interviews with people directly affected by the dam and the resettlement scheme. Reactions to the project were candid and reflected many varied viewpoints. Mr. Sandler's photographs and video are meant to provide a lasting document of a region and its people that will be permanently altered.

The sluice gates of the controversial Three Gorges Dam were closed in June of 2003 and the first stage of inundation has been completed. The water level rose to 443 feet, washing away what remained of dismantled cities and evacuated pasturelands. Already, more than half of those affected by the project have been forced to relocate to new cities built on higher ground, or to 'host communities' in far removed coastal cities. By 2009, if the construction project is completed on schedule, an estimated 1.2 to 2 million people will have been forced to relocate.

This show is for one night only, Wednesday, July 27th from 6-9pm. The video screening will be at 7pm sharp, and with special permission from Four Square Productions Canada, will begin with a 40 minute piece entitled Man vs. Water, part 2 in a 3 part series produced for Discovery Channel Canada. Water, Water examines this century's next great challenge, managing the world's water resources. In addition there will be a silent photo auction, to raise money to translate interviews, and commence editing for a feature length movie. All in attendance will receive a 4x6 inch signed and editioned print, while they last.

Holding Ground Under Water is part of an ongoing photo and video documentary on the Three Gorges Dam and it's impact on the people and environment in the Yangtze River Basin.

After serving in the military for eight years, including a tour of duty in
Iraq, Kevin Benderman decided he could not participate in the Iraq war and
occupation. He filed for conscientious objector status in December 2004.
His application was quickly denied without due process, and on the weekend
of Jan. 7, 2005 Benderman refused to re-deploy to Iraq with his unit. “As
I went through the process which led to my decision to refuse deployment
to Iraq for the second time, I was torn between thoughts of abandoning the
soldiers that I serve with, or following my conscience, which tells me:
war is the ultimate in destruction and waste of humanity.”

Sgt. Benderman was charged with Desertion and Missing
Movement by Design (Articles 85 and 87 in the Uniform Code of Military
Justice) and scheduled for court martial on May 11. On May 10th 30 cities
held public support events for both Kevin and Navy refuser Pablo Paredes.
On May 11 in a partial victory, Kevin’s court martial judge overturned his
hearing—citing a biased investigation—and ordered a new hearing.

On Wednesday May 25 the military filed a new court martial
against Kevin, which was just recently scheduled for July 28. Once again
people across the country are asked to show their support on this day.

People are supporting Kevin and the thousands of other public and (mostly)
private resisters because their courageous stand against the war---
actually upholding international law-- deserves our support. They also
deserve our support because the military is an anti-democratic institution
which denies soldiers basic democratic rights and punishes them for
engaging in free speech. This is reflected in the many cases which have
rejected granting conscientious objector status for soldiers who, like
Kevin, take a public stand. The other reason to support Kevin and Pablo is
that GI resistance has the power to stop the war and occupation in Iraq,
and check the reckless policies of empire behind it. Young people in the
military, resisting recruitment on college campuses and in the streets are
taking the lead in this unstated, but potentially successful "people
power" strategy.

Simnuke Art Exhibit Indicts Sixty Years of the Atomic Age at
San Francisco's RX Gallery From July 28 through August 25

San Francisco, a city known for activism and creativity, will host the
emotional and politically charged Simnuke Art Exhibit on July 28th, 7pm
to midnight, at Rx Gallery, 132 Eddy Street. Over the last sixty years,
people
all over the world have lived with the looming threat of nuclear arms.
For the artists exhibiting in the Simnuke Art Exhibit, this struggle
expresses itself through searing commentary and stunning artwork
condemning the nuclear arms race.

The Simnuke Art Exhibit is part of the Simnuke Project, a three-part
memorial to the atomic age. On July 16, 2005 at 05:29:45 local time the
Simnuke Project will commemorate the 60-year anniversary of Trinity by
simulating the look and feel of the detonation of a nuclear device.

The art of the Simnuke Art Exhibit is co-curated by Sasha Harris-Cronin
and Max Carlson and comprises 20 artists from the United States and
Japan. The exhibit pieces will range from photography to kinetic
sculpture, from humorous statements to solemn exposés. In addition,
there will be an exhibit of government documents from the Prelinger
Library tracing the history of the atomic era in public policy.

The artists in the Simnuke Art Exhibit include: Carole Gallagher,
Michael Light, Richard Ross, Aaron Ximm, Yosuke Yamahata, Bryan Cole,
Robert Dohrmann, Joy Garnett, Jenne Giles, Mark Henson, Garret Izumi,

As global nuclear proliferation blooms into reality, and the United
States moves ahead with so-called tactical "bunker busters" and nuclear
arms in space, it is critical that this powerful collection reach an

person leave the gallery, go home, and write their congressperson, then
we have made a difference."

# PETA's United Colors Against Benetton Protest debuts in San Francisco!
campaign to force clothing retailer Benetton to stop using Australian wool – Friday, July 29, at the Benetton on 39 Stockton Street 11: 45 a.m. to 1 p.m.  All materials will be provided, so just bring yourself and anyone else that would like to attend!  We need people who are willing to hold signs and hand out leaflets while some activists hold a banner covered in paints of many colors while crying tears of blood.  This is a creative and powerful demonstration for people to see!

Benetton uses wool from Australia, where sheep endure a gruesome procedure called “mulesing,” in which farmers flip lambs onto their backs, restrain them with metal bars and use gardening shears to cut chunks of flesh from their rumps without any painkillers. When their wool is no longer needed, sheep are crammed by the tens of thousand onto huge, open-decked ships and transported thousands of miles in filthy, disease-ridden conditions, through all weather extremes, to countries in the Middle East and North Africa that have virtually no animal welfare standards, where their throats are slit while they are fully conscious. Sick and injured sheep, treated as mere cargo, are thrown overboard to the sharks or are ground up alive in a shipboard macerator. Although there are more effective, humane alternatives to mulesing and live export readily available today, producers have no incentive to change as long as companies like Benetton continue to purchase Australian wool. Benetton can help save sheep from this suffering simply by refusing to buy wool from Australia until mulesing and live export are ended.

Salmonid Restoration Federation and the Trees Foundation will sponsor the 8th annual Coho Confab August 12-14, 2005 at the Wolf Creek Education Center in Redwood National Park in Humboldt County. The Confab is a symposium to explore watershed restoration and learn techniques to enhance recovery of salmon and steelhead. The Confab brings together community members, landowners, activists, scientists, and restoration ecologists for a weekend of innovative skills-building workshops, tours of restoration projects, community networking, and fun.

Free Witchcamp for Activists
A week of intense magic, ritual and learning in the
deep woods of southern Oregon. Our magical tradition honors the wild, and
calls for service to the earth and the community. This Witchcamp specifically
honors that call and is focused on sharing our magical and activism skills
and healing with those who are currently working or are called
to work for all forms of justice: environmental,
social, political, racial, gender, and economic. The teaching team includes
Starhawk, Brook, Ruby, Baruch, and others. The teaching paths include
wilderness awareness, healing and herbalism, permaculture, street magic,
introduction to magic, and ritual creation. Bring own tent and
