# The “Celebrating Women’s Leadership in Sustainable Development” event is coming together beautifully! Thank you all for your help! We will be having a planning meeting this Friday, May 13th (is it already May?!?) at 5:30 at the Pacific Environment office at 311 California St. Suite 650. (A few blocks from the Embarcadero BART station—office is on California at Battery). For those of you who can’t make it in person, there will be a call-in option:

Conference call number: 1 888 276 4201. When prompted the participant code is 544539.

We hope you can make it!

Again, we are thrilled to work with you all on this important project celebrating women! Thank you all for your interest, and please send me a quick email letting me know whether or not you can make it.

Attached is the most recent flyer for the event, and below is a text version. PLEASE take a moment to spread this info to your networks and listserves, and if you are a co-sponsor, please post to your websites and alert your membership if you have not done so already.

In addition, we are building a Clothesline of Environmental Heroes which will feature dozens of the incredible women who are working around the world throughout the venue space. This will recognize women working on the frontlines in their communities and who may not otherwise have the opportunity to be honored. We will hang their pictures and descriptions on a clothesline that will break up the space.

We would like to ask that you and/or your organization help contribute several pictures and stories of outstanding women you have worked with over the years. The more you can send us, the better! This may be something you can put together relatively quickly—it may also be a great volunteer/intern project if you so choose.

If you can, please send us these as one-page documents—with a woman’s picture and “story”. These can be any women you have worked with who you find represent leadership in any of Dr. Maathai’s three arenas of environmental sustainability, democracy, or human rights with a paragraph description below.

If you haven’t already, please submit your pictures/stories to Kirsten [at] globalexchange.org or

# the human ascension SF Fri May 13 9pm-2am
All performers, artists, musicians & mystics.Come create magik.
he Magician's wherehouse 672 South Van Ness (btwn 17th & 18th)
A NIGHT OF EXPERIMENTAL ART & THEATER
The intention: to use one of the most amazing art spaces in the city to create a night of artistic experimentation. We will attempt to break the barriers of what is live performance by using spontaneous artist collaboration, ritual, and visionary intentional gathering of the minds to invoke transformation. The inside of this space looks like a magician’s layer mixed with an Atlantis goddess temple. It has a built in stage, props, altars and goddess sculptures. You have to step into the surreal magic of this place to believe it. The owners who built it were geniuses.

We are inviting all artists, performers, mystics, healers to bring their tools, toys and talismans with the intention of creating a space for hybrid fusion. No expectations or rules are being layed down. There is no one main group behind this- it is a few people with performance backrounds who to bring more people together to experiment, exchange ideas and party. The outcome of the night will be based on the power of those who show up and their ability to collaborate with the infusion in the moment. This will be the first night of experimentation in this sacred space that is being given to us. We hope to nourish the growth of a project like this and see all visionaries from already established groups come together to open the doorway of the human ascension in a live setiing. To come together in the moment to create collective magik and ritual. Anyone who comes should feel free to create and contribute in a live setting no matter what your backround is. The vibe will be intimate and transforming. The hope is to create a series of events rooted in: the psychedlic circus, surreal cabaret, shamanic journeying and mythological storytelling manifested live in the moment.

CACI International, a private corporation, provided many of the
interrogators at Abu Ghraib prison. Its employees were directly
implicated in the torture scandal. But CACI has faced no consequences so
far. Not one of its employees has been prosecuted, its contract for
"intelligence services" in Iraq was renewed last August, and it
earned over $1 billion in revenue last year - 95% of it from your tax
dollars. Plus, CACI continues to do business undisturbed in San
Francisco and dozens of other cities around the U.S.

This Monday, May 16th, CACI's vice president and other top executives will
be in town to present at an investors' conference at the Westin St.
Francis Hotel. Come help us confront CACI's directors and clients about
their involvement in torture and launch a campaign to shut down CACI's San

# Sat May 14 Marin Living Foods Pot Luck and Speaker Gathering

Pot Luck and Speaker Gathering by the
Marin Living Foods Community
Our Featured Speaker Will Be DR. KARIN DINA

Karin Dina's enthusiasm and study of health has spanned 1 ½ decades. While
in college, she experienced fatigue that no doctor was able to help her
with. Instead, she decided to find the path to health on her own. She read
countless books and did much research on achieving health over the next few
years. After becoming a vegetarian, she experienced an increase in her
energy level, but it was not until she started eating a largely raw diet
that her fatigue completely abated. In addition, she felt an abundance of
energy that she had never felt before in her life. Since 1990, she has
followed a vegan diet consisting of 80-100% raw foods and has devoted her
life to educating people on how to achieve optimum wellness through diet,
exercise, and emotional balance.

Karin holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of
Connecticut. In 1997, she graduated from the University of Colorado with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Magna Cum Laude honors. She studied
naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University, where she was an honors student,
and graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic West with Magna Cum Laude
honors in March of 2005. Throughout her undergraduate and graduate
coursework, she studied advanced nutrition and nutritional biochemistry
extensively. Upon receiving her California chiropractic license, she will be
practicing chiropractic and nutrition counseling at Vitality Health Center
of Marin in San Rafael, CA.

Her talk for the Marin Living Foods May potluck will include raw and living
food recipe demonstrations with information on the scientific reasons for
eating plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts. Please
join us for this fun and informative talk! For more info please go to:
http://www.drdina.com or http://www.vitalityhealthmarin.com

When : On Saturday,
May 14th, from 6 til 9pm,
Where: 1 Wellbrock
Hts. San Rafael, CA 94903 (directions below)
Cost: $3 donation and Raw food dish to serve 8, per person

6:00 pm start. PLEASE try to be on time. We eat at 6:15 and our speakers
generally start at 7:00

Please bring a raw food dish of your choice to serve 8 people making sure to
review the guidelines for food below.
*********** Guidelines for Food ***********
Please prepare your dishes with raw, organic (at least pesticide/herbicide
free), vegetarian (vegan - no animal products) ingredients. Nothing cooked,
steamed, baked or otherwise heated above 105 degrees is appropriate for this
potluck. Dehydrated foods and dried fruits are fine as long as they have
been prepared within the temperature guideline above. Tofu and most seaweeds
are not raw foods. Please pay attention to what might go into your dish;
oils, vinegar, spices, salt...is it raw, healthy, etc. Could it be added
later at the potluck by those who want it?
Some attendees have been on the raw path for 20+ years so we must adhere to
these seemingly strict guidelines. There are some wonderful raw foods
cookbooks available at the local health food stores for new ideas, or you
can go to http://www.living-foods.com for lots of great recipes. Beautiful leafy
greens and veggies presented in a wide variety of (raw) ways are always a
winner. Be creative, enjoy yourself and have fun! If in doubt - leave it
out! Call or email if you need ideas or have questions.

Now you can send your friends to <http://WWW.MARINRAWFOOD.COM> for potluck
details.

******* Plates and Silverware *******
Please bring your own plate and silverware. Not only is it ecologically
beneficial, it's a much more pleasing dining experience.
Directions: Aldersgate Church is in San Rafael, Marin County, California. It
sits on a hill overlooking Kaiser hospital.
It can be reached by US Highway 101 north of San Francisco, exiting at
Freitas Parkway just north of the Marin County Civic center, a noted Frank
Lloyd Wright designed structure. Following Freitas Parkway west, turn left
on Las Gallinas, then right on Nova Albion Way. Turn right again on
Montecillo, passing Kaiser Hospital. Turn left on Trellis and left again at
the crest of the hill, which is Wellbrock Heights. Follow the street into
the parking area. Map available at http://www.1wellbrock.org

# TEMPORARY WILD ZONE 14th, 15th and 16th-May 2005, VALENCIA NEAR THE VALENCIA CITY, IN MEDITERRANEAN COAST (SPAIN) ANTICIVILIZATION GATHERING. We think that there can be two kinds of debates in the morning. First a debate that should be introduced by someone involved in the issue debated, as a way to initiate the meeting. After a short break, a more general meeting to share ideas and experiences related to the issue that has been debated before. In the afternoon we should gather together to share and know experiences that are working already. Later, the practical workshops. May 14th:Morning: welcome and the first meeting to organize the programme or activities. Afternoon: debating the development policy. Hold by someone from the Itoiz or another big infrastructure. Practical workshops. May 15th:Morning: debating the action and the ways to act it. Hold by someone from the struggle against OMG. Afternoon: International relations. The introduction will be in charge to someone involved in supporting the Papua people or the Mapuches. Practical workshops. May 16th:Morning: the possibility of making an international ant civilization web. Afternoon: General meeting to exchange and share. Starting the farewell. And performance neo-luddite. We have already set up some of the practical workshops: making soap, cryptography without computers, applied botanic knowledge, mankala, organic agriculture, energetic crisis, actual applications to spearthrower. Vegetarian food, with a vegan option will be prepared, and we are going to need help for making it. You need to bring plate and fork. And because we are going to camp, you need to bring your tent and sleeping bag. The night time will be for personal relations and fun. MORE INFO WRITE TO llavors [at] nodo50.org http://nodo50.org

NextAid is a Los Angeles based non-profit organization dedicated to creating sustainable solutions for African children orphaned as a result of AIDS. By partnering with other organizations in the production of music benefits and awareness-raising activities, NextAid channels emergency and long-term aid to African children in need. Proceeds from the event will go towards the building of an earth-friendly multi-purpose center for Youth for a Vision, a non-profit organization comprised of teens mostly orphaned by AIDS who use theater and music to teach AIDS awareness to their peers, literally saving lives.  This center will serve as a template for future centers throughout Africa. One of the center’s buildings will be named after Wert Terry.

Francisco office.

Tuesday May 17th-
Independent Media in a Time of War- Documentary 29 minutes
Amy Goodman observes how the US media in wartime fails to uphold it’s important democratic duties. According to Noam Chomsky, “In order for democracy to be ‘democratic’ the media has to fulfill two functions:
1) The media must report the news fairly, completely, and without bias.
2) The media must function as a watchdog for the public against abuses of power.”
As good man reminds us throughout the video, the media, has failed to provide accurate, unbiased information to the citizens about the actions and policies of the current administration’s war on Iraq. Goodman untangles the role of the media in reporting complex wartime events and provides a context in which to think about their role when she asks, “If this were state media, how would it be any different?” Goodman advocates for independent media and their role in providing an alternative to the “corporate lens” through which we view the important democratic tradition of debate and dissent in times of war.
Voices Against War; F-15 NYC- Documentary21:43 minutes
“Voices against War” is a documentary chronicling the experiences of citizens who took to the streets in Manhattan in union with millions of people around the world on February 15, 2003 in a day called the “The World Says No to War” By the end of the weekend, demonstrations had been held in more than 600 cities across the world. Organizers have called “The world Says NO to War” possibly the largest day of protest in the history of the world. Major cities across the world reported crowds ranging from 60,000 to 1,500,00 filling the streets to protest the war in Iraq.

Friday-May 20th
PEACE ONE DAY -80 minutes documentary
is the story of one man’s attempts to persuade the global community via the United Nations to officially sanction a global ceasefire day; a day of non-violence; a day of Peace.

This documentary charts the remarkable 5-year journey of the filmmaker as he meets heads of state, Noble Peace Laureates, aid agencies, freedom fighters, media moguls, the innocent victims of war and, eventually, everyone who was anyone at the UN.

An individual genuinely can make a difference: The UN International Day of Peace is now fixed in the calendar on 21st September annually. The real challenge has now begun - to get the world to unite on a day fast approaching.

# YLEM Forum: ARCHIMEDIA from Australia

FREE, Open to the public and wheelchair accessible

Molly Hankwitz and David Cox of Archimedia are here from Australia to present a formidable body of work, the result of a design and research collaboration that started in 1998. Using film and architecture, Archimedia uniquely interprets the overlap between digital media and architectural, public spaces in its lectures, performances and presentations. “Cities of the future,” “blobchitecture,” surveillance, hackers and “spaces of command and control” are some of the themes to be explored.

Program:
In their ongoing experiments in “Urban Strechnology” (the study of the street) they have come up with a “Tool Kit” for micro broadcasting. Their 15-minute infomercial boasts about it.

We’ll also experience “Ambient Unities,” a sound collage in which audio tracks, networked sounds, film sound tracks, Napster and live mix have been employed to comment on the modern city in film and political culture.

As well, they have experiments to show about “laptop cinema” and the small screen, which consisted of the screening and trading of cinema in public places during a series of workshops they gave. They’ll show a short film made on a wrist cam.

The Archimedia study, “Lost Cities/Spaces of Command and Control,” looks at our 9/11 anxiety in relation to cities, fortress structures and networked culture. We’ll see excerpts of it. Finally, “Space of Command and Control” looks at the Panopticon (they see all you do, you can’t see them).

These will be followed by a discussion of your 21st century survival tools: “diy” navigation and personalized augmented reality.

Archimedia is David Cox, Melbournian digital media artist and award winning filmmaker and Molly Hankwitz, media artist, net and new media writer. They have presented at Artspace, (Sydney),Other Cinema, Artists Television Access, Gallery 21, Royal Institute of Melbourne, Brisbane Powerhouse, Metro Arts, ThisIsNotArt, and Straight Out of Brisbane festivals.

Raindance and family are putting together an event unlike anything we have ever done before and we invite you be a part of it.
This event is in the spirit of Fun, coexistence, sustainable living, recharging your spiritual batteries, experiencing nature, and of course dancing our asses off.

This event will be held at Cutter Reservation, a 300-acre scout reservation and campground in the mountains near Big Basin Redwood Park.
There is more than enough camping room for everyone, however parking is somewhat limited
so please carpool as much as possible. Some of the camping spots you can drive to and some are a short hike. There are bathrooms at all the campgrounds and even a couple of showers near the pool.

Amenities of this magical place include, but not limited to:
? A large Pool to swim in complete with djs for our Sat afternoon pool party.
? A small lake with access to canoes to paddle around and enjoy the beauty of it all.
? Endless hiking with many cool areas to check out.
? A healing zone with local practitioners.
? A remote (hike to) stage where you can put on your own acoustic show of any sort. (this is the perfect spot to watch the sunset!!) So if you are a musician - bring your instruments!!
? There are a number of tents (40 or so) that are pre existing they can be used on a first come basis. They have two cots in each one, no flame is allowed in these tents.

# Proctor & Gamble Global Day of Action http://idausa.org

IDA has been boycotting Procter & Gamble (P&G) since 1989 because they
blind, burn, maim and kill thousands of animals each year in product
tests that are cruel, outdated and not required by law. While P&G
claims to lead the industry in developing alternatives to animal
testing, they continue to test products on animals even while hundreds
of other companies have stopped.

IDA sponsors a Global Day of Action Against P&G each year to focus
attention on their cruelty and hypocrisy. Last year over 140 boycott
P&G events took place all over the world - from Auckland to Aberdeen -
making it one of the largest days of action of its kind in the world.
This year's event takes place on Saturday, May 21st, and we hope
you'll join us by organizing or participating in an event.

There are plenty of ways to get involved, from staging a protest
outside of a P&G facility or a store that sells P&G products to
organizing a P&G product return in your community. Contact IDA at
(415) 388-9641 or ida [at] idausa.org for brochures and other materials to
distribute. For information about how P&G tortures animals and more
ways that you can make a difference, visit
