San Francisco Welcomes Deb Price and Joyce Murdoch
Journalists Deb Price and Joyce Murdoch are the authors of the groundbreaking
"Courting Justice: Gay Men and Lesbians v. the Supreme Court," a 50-year history of
how the U.S. Supreme Court has dealt with gay rights. The book won the 2002 Lambda
Literary Foundation award for gay studies. And The Washington Post's Book World
hailed it as one of its "Raves and Faves" of 2001.
Deb and Joyce also authored the award-winning "And Say Hi to Joyce: America's First
Gay Column Comes Out," which tells the inspiring story of Deb's pioneering newspaper
column. They’ve appeared on Oprah, the Phil Donahue Show, and have spoken at
countless events, including at Yale Law School and the Library of Congress.
Joyce, a former Washington Post editor and reporter, is now a managing editor of
politics at National Journal magazine, the weekly political bible for Washington
insiders. She is also a 2005 Hoover Institution Media Fellow. Deb, a Washington
correspondent for The Detroit News, has been writing the first nationally syndicated
column on gay and lesbian issues in mainstream newspapers for nearly 13 years.
Deb and Joyce were married on June 27, 2003 in Toronto City Hall. Soon afterward,
they became the first same-sex couple to appear on The Washington Post's
Engagements, Weddings and Anniversaries pages. A year later, Deb and Joyce became
the first gay couple to announce a wedding anniversary in The Washington Post, which
included a photograph of them wearing leis on their Hawaiian honeymoon. They are
celebrating their 20th anniversary as a couple this June with a trip to Hong Kong
and Bali.
