A last-minute ad blitz by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger apparently sank a measure that would have reformed California's "Three Strikes" sentencing law.

Things had been looking good for Proposition 66 in the polls up until recent days, when television viewers saw their popular governor displaying pictures of child molesters and other vile characters for whom he claimed the measure would prove to be a "get out of jail free" card.

Proposition 66's backers -- who struggled for years to get this on the ballot as lawmakers steadfastly refused to amend the law -- say it lets voters who supported the original law but find its implementation too extreme refine it without losing the power to punish repeat, violent offenders.
