25 killed as Allawi warns of final assault on Fallujah

* Japan says troops will stay in Iraq despite hostage’s death

RAMADI: Twenty five Iraqis were killed and at least 23 people wounded, including three US marines, in explosions and clashes between rebels and US troops in Ramadi and Tikrit on Sunday, medics and witnesses said.

Fifteen Iraqi civilians were killed and about eight wounded on Sunday when insurgents fired a rocket in Tikrit, the US military said. The rocket, one of two fired by the insurgents, landed near a mosque, shortly after the end of evening prayers, Captain Bill Coppernoll of the US Army’s First Infantry Division public affairs office said.
Meanwhile, Iraq’s interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi on Sunday warned of imminent military action against militants in Fallujah. “We have entered the final phase to solve the Fallujah problem,” Allawi told reporters in a grave tone.

Explosions and sporadic gunfire echoed through the streets of the Sunni Muslim stronghold, west of Baghdad, said a reporter at the scene. Doctor Hamdi al-Raoui said the Ramadi general hospital had admitted 10 dead Iraqis and 12 wounded in the skirmishes that began at dawn, updating an earlier toll.

A second correspondent embedded with the military said that three US marines were injured when a roadside bomb exploded as a convoy passed through the Sunni Muslim bastion. The blast happened shortly before 0430 GMT in the capital city of the restive Al-Anbar province. Two Iraqi National Guards were killed when gunmen ambushed their car on a road southeast of Baghdad, the Interior Ministry said. Iraqi National Guards arrested 19 people in an insurgent hotspot south of Baghdad, the Defence Ministry said on Saturday.

Two mortars hit a military base in a restive region south of Baghdad on Sunday where a battle group of British soldiers have recently arrived, causing no casualties, a spokesman said.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi vowed on Sunday that Japanese troops would continue their domestically unpopular mission in Iraq after militants demanding a pullout killed a 24-year-old Japanese tourist.

A head and a decapitated body with bound hands and feet were found wrapped in a US flag Saturday behind a hospital on Baghdad’s Haifa Street, a stronghold of Zarqawi.

In a separate crisis, a Polish woman held hostage by a militant group in Iraq was shown in a video on Al-Jazeera TV Saturday night pleading anew for the withdrawal of Polish troops and the release of women prisoners to save her life.

A British soldier has been found dead at a military base in Basra, southern Iraq, but the death did not appear to be combat-related, the Ministry of Defence said on Sunday. A group linked to Zarqawi and others have sent menacing letters to the organisers of Iraq’s upcoming elections warning them to stop work or die, a member of the electoral team said on Sunday. “We receive letters everyday demanding that we drop the elections because they are a product of the US-led occupation,” said a spokesman for Iraq’s Electoral Commission.
