Update from the RNC

by Dallas B
Fresno activists storm Manhattan
It's been a busy few days. Fresno activists have particapated in The Critical Mass ride on friday, the huge United 4 peace and Justice rally, the Caos on Broadway protests and the Still we Rise up Poor peoples march today. In between Fresnans have been greeting the RNC delegates as they leave their hotels to go shopping or out to eat.
The Critical Mass ride on Friday traveled throughout Manhattan and resulted in 264 arrests. 6 to 10 thousand riders rode down 6th avenue then circled over to 9th avenue rode all the way to 59th street and circled Columbus Circle roundabout several times before heading down through times Square. It then rode past Madison square Garden (the site of the Convention) before heading to saint marks church for a after ride party. Riders were arrested as some went for the Lincoln tunnel, while others were arrested at times square, in front of madison sq. garden [MSG] and the remaining arrests occured outside saint marks church. No one from Fresno was arrested.
On sunday we joined with over 400000 protestors in the United for peace and justice march. We stood for about 2 1/2 hours just waiting for the crowd to move. As we approched MSG a group lit a paper mache green dragon on fire directlly in front of the garden. The police came out and arrested about 15 people.
Latter that evening several of us went to the Caos on Broadway protests. There we greeted the delegates with chants of: "Thanks for supporting the arts, now go home", "We hope your kids are gay", "RNC ya latter", and "Fuck the GOP". Throughout sunday about another 250 people were arrested.
Today Fresno activists join the Still We Rise Up poor peoples march. There were homeless people young mothers and many Immigrants and people of color at this march. There was about 10,000 people marching with several marching bands and radical cheerleaders. It was a very lively and festive mardh.
Tonight many of us will be catching up on our sleep.
Keep an eye out for our report back when we return to Fresno. It should be in mid september.
We'll be posting photos soon. Go to nycimc.org for more information. And the lattest updates
