Will veep retire in January?
Why did Dick Cheney speak up for queer freedom?
To the Bay Area Reporter:
In Iowa, on August 24, Dick Cheney publicly differed from George Bush, regarding same-sex matrimony.
"Lynne and I have a gay daughter, so it's an issue that our family is very familiar with," said the veep. "With respect to the question of relationships, my general view is that freedom means freedom for everyone.
People ought to be able to free -- ought to be free to enter into any kind
of relationship they want to."
[For more, please see Washington Post report, via sfGate:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/a/2004/08/25/MNGHQ8DV6Q1.DTL ]
So Cheney has taken a libertarian and localist stand, endorsing the power of individuals and of the several states. Bush, calling for a federal anti-marriage amendment to the U.S. Constitution, exalts the federal government over the 50 states and over individuals.
On this issue, Cheney follows the Republicanism of Lincoln, while Bush imitates fundamentalist ayatollahs.
Fascist bigots are saying that a mere Vice President shouldn't dare to publicly reveal his private disagreements with his President.
Why did Cheney so dare?
First, let's assume that he wanted, as a father, to speak frankly about an issue which affects his daughter. Second, perhaps members of his family have been lobbying him to speak up.
Third, perhaps he hasn't decided (yet?) that he wants to run for another four
years as Veep. Considering his physical disabilities, another term could kill him.
Because of his fragile health, he has always had the option of resignng from the 2004 ticket, without shame or blame.
This option belongs to him alone. Nobody, not even Bush, can force him off the ticket. If Bush tried to fire him, against Cheney's will, the Republican party would be engulfed in factional strife. Thus weakened, the GOP would lose in November.
But if Cheney himself CHOOSES to drop off the ticket, his move might strengthen Bush.
We probably won't know until Republicans convene in New York.

on "social conservatives" reacting to Cheney's speech:

....
Hmmmm?
If Cheney gets attacked from the right
(instead of, as usual, from the left),
then can this make him falsely appear to be
almost moderate???
If Cheney & Bush "agree to disagree",
then will this help the GOP look like
a "big tent" -- that is, like a coalition party,
open to more than one viewpoint?
So maybe this will help the Bush-Cheney ticket?
And maybe this whole incident was planned in advance,
jointly, by Bush & Cheney?

No Naked Gay Boys, We're Republicans
by The Associated Press
Posted: August 25, 2004
8:32 pm ET
(New York City)
The Statue of Liberty. Bloomingdale's. The Brooklyn
Botanical Gardens. A stage full of naked guys singing. Oops!
The city's tourist bureau has pulled an off-Broadway show called "Naked Boys
Singing" from a list of discounted offerings to visiting Republican delegates,
after the Republican National Committee complained it wasn't suitable.
The gay-themed show, billed as a musical revue that "celebrates the splendors
of male nudity in comedy, song and dance," has received generally good
reviews and hasn't created much of a stir since it began its run six years ago. Its
2,127 performances make it the 10th longest-running off-Broadway show.
So, when NYC & Company placed the production among the theater offerings for
its "Come Early, Stay Late" program designed to get delegates to spend an
extra couple of days in the city, nobody thought much about it.
But this month, when members of the RNC's Committee on Arrangements began to
review the list of offerings, the show's title caught their eye, and they
asked that it be removed from the tourist bureau's Web site.
"The Republican Party selected what we felt were offers that would best suit
our audience," RNC spokesman Leonard Alcivar said Wednesday. "We thank the
producers for offering their generous discount, and wish them continued success
with the show."
Cristyne Nicholas, president and CEO of NYC & Company, took the blame,
saying, "the offers came in so quickly faster than we could originally handle."
The show's producer, Carl White, said the RNC's decision to drop the show
runs counter to the reasons Republicans chose New York to host the convention in
the first place.
"It's very disappointing to us," said White. "They say they picked us because
of our equality, our diversity, our culture."
In fact, before the show was removed from the site, about a dozen people
presumably delegates had purchased tickets using the special code offered on the
Web site. Those tickets will be honored.
