Imam Abdul Alim Musa Joins List Of Muslims Attacked By U.S. Police

TORONTO (Crescent International) -- Imam Abdul Alim Musa, of the Masjid al-Islam in Washington DC, one of the most active American Muslim leaders, joined the list of Muslims to suffer harassment at the hands of the U.S. police on July 7, when he was assaulted, threatened with a gun and then arrested for no reason.

Imam Musa, who is also a member of the Institute of Contemporary Islamic Thought (ICIT) and a well-known speaker around the world, was returning to the Masjid al-Islam from a community picnic at around 7 pm, when he saw police beating another motorist. The motorist, Danny Proctor, was hanging out of the car while two officers were beating him with batons; blood was oozing from his head. A third officer was holding his legs from the other side.

Imam Musa stopped his car and shouted to the police to stop. When they continued, Imam Musa went over to them and grabbed the batons of both officers. For a few moments, the situation was brought under control. A third police officer then pulled out his gun and demanded that Imam Musa get down on his knees. He refused. By this time, a number of other motorists had also stopped. Imam Musa’s wife, Sister Bahiya Ali and their three-year-old daughter were witnessing this brutal and criminal behaviour of the police.

Perhaps shocked at Imam Musa’s defiance and the fact that there were so many witnesses, the police officer put his gun back in his holster but he and the other officers manhandled Imam Musa to the ground and handcuffed him.

For attempting to prevent the police from beating a man almost to death, Imam Musa was charged with "assaulting the police." He spent two nights in jail before appearing before a judge on July 10. He was also denied the medication he has been taking since last month, when he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung (he was unable to attend the ICIT Seerah conference in Sri Lanka), and was in hospital until a weak before the incident. In court, the police reduced the charge against him to a misdemeanor, aware that they would not be able to sustain the assault charge.

Police brutality has become common in America. Imam Musa’s case simply confirms what many others face everyday in the US. Last year, a Muslim brother was shot dead in front of his apartment after the police accused him of failing to stop at a red light. A Muslimah, seven months pregnant, was arrested when she called the police about a white male loitering outside her house. The police accused her of possessing a weapon, yet none was found. Such cases are widespread and life is becoming increasingly difficult for people of colour.

Since the Rodney King episode in 1993, the Los Angeles police has been exposed as a bunch of thugs. New York, too, has been in the spotlight since the brutal assault on Haitian immigrant Leuma Abner in July 1997 and the brutal, senseless killing of Ahmed Diallo in 1998.

The danger that Imam Musa potentially faced, if he been in the same situation at a different time say, is illustrated by the case of Imam Jamil al-Amin of Atlanta. He is facing a murder charge and the prosecution have demanded the death penalty, even though there is strong evidence in his favour, and he has a long record of police harassment dating back to before his conversion to Islam. To their eternal shame, many so-called Muslim leaders have distanced themselves from Imam Jamil’s case and are not prepared even to help in his legal defence which is his fundamental right.

You know its these outright cases of Racism that somehow the left conspicuously misses while they cling like cultists to the spectacular case of Mumia the case of our Muslim brother Imam Musa goes unprotested. I for one am sick of the anti-Muslim anti-Arab undertones of alot of popular leftism today. Where is the Left on behalf of brother Imam Musa. They come out in numbers and get sophisticated when some crusty white kids get shot with beanbags by the Oakland PD. In fact they brought it to the press as a human rights violation under the UN. Where is that kind of advocacy for African-Americans. Definitely not in the BAY AREA. I think the liberal Bay Area is the most racist place I have ever lived in this country, go figure. Where was the left for H. Rap Brown, Imam Jamil Al Ameen who was railroaded into jail on bogus charges quite recently? Why does the popular cult left have lockdown on alternative radio in the Bay Area? Hint; the popular left should not be based in one particular ethnicities world view. Can we get some real action and solidarity against the racist anti-Muslim actions of the police and US government or what?!?!
now looky here...we've got a roach crawling around in the dark taking on the identity of someone with enough moxie to call out racist bigots when he sees them (i.e. - zionists). i know nate collins personally and he would never write what's seen in "the task before us". anyone who has ever read his other writings knows this. he is NOT anti-jew - he is DECIDEDLY anti-zionist, just as anyone who has a thread of good ethical sensibility should be.

these people (zionists) are really quite pathetic and can't help themselves. they are exceedingly unbalanced and are in need of alot of help. they are only digging a hole that's very deep already much deeper and more innocent people are going to get hurt because of their actions, unfortunately (just as alot of innocent Muslims are being hurt by the actions of the extremists among them).

when the whole zionist project collapes, they will have no one to blame but themselves - because you don't treat human beings the way they do and not expect it to come back to you eventually...that's a Universal Law you can't escape - as much as you try spin and play with language & history, and attempt to deceive.

to whoever wrote "the task before us": if you had a shred of courage or integrity, you wouldn't be doing something as wack as write in someone else's name to try discredit them. that's just the epitome of a punk.

A simple analysis of the fake posters writing is quite revealing.

Now people from the right make absurd comments all the time on indybay, no surprise. But notice the fake posters use of the words ‘pacifist nonviolence’. No one off of the right would attribute the rejection of ‘pacifist nonviolence’ to a bad guy like me.

The fake poster is obviously a lefty, and really the left need not proceed with such cowardice.

Obviously the comment about the popular left being rooted in one ethnicities world view hit a nerve. Well that is my perspective, and I will proceed in my work to help reform the left and bring in the perspective of other peoples and traditions. The behavior of many people and institutions on the left looks alot like racist power consolidation from people who are not interested in empowering anyone but themselves.

I believe that the tradition and world view of Arabs and Muslims is particularly important at this time precisely because US foreign policy has made Arabs and Muslims our primary target. People/cultures with other world views should be allowed to challenge the dominant narrative without all these reactionary tactics coming from people who are supposedly on the left.

The key is, that when the racism comes out, it is revealed to all that these people are not on the left. The problem is that they themselves have not realized this. That is why I would say that provocative criticism of the state of Israel is so important, because it helps some of our cousins on the left do a little soul searching and come to some decisions about whose side it is that they are in fact on.

So perhaps my contention is proven true by the trolls themselves, that there is a great deal of Zionism and ethnocentrism on the left, and that is has no place there.
As for the contention that status quo politics on the left is a big charade refer to for example the Anderson Valley Advertiser(AVA) http://www.theava.com, Counterpunch http://www.counterpunch.org, Z magazine(especially Ward Churchill)http://www.zmag.org/bios/homepage.cfm?authorID=62 , and check out ‘Pacifism as Pathology’ by Ward Churchill.

The funny thing about all this drama with the anonymous Zionists at indybay is that the Zionists actually believe themselves to be important people. The fact of the matter is, I wouldn’t give a rats ass about them if it weren’t for the fact that they are standing on the necks of Palestinians. That my friend, is the only reason that I have even mentioned their name.
by could be a fakie
race-baiting could be a tactic from either side in this toxically-polemicized atmosphere.

now whose fault is that?
