Pictures: Madeleine Albright In Berkeley

by Z
On Wednesday February 11th, Madeleine Albright spoke at Cody's Books in Berkeley. Several people protested outside and one person inside was briefly detained with a pie, but most of the crowd seemed to be supportive of Albright and asked her relatively nonpolitical questions. One person did ask a question related to civilian deaths resulting from the US bombing of Sudan, and Albright responded that few civilians were killed and then added that all efforts were taken to avoid such deaths during the bombings (words that almost echoed word for word the way the Bush administration has dealt with similar questions). In her main speech Albright stated that she would have supported the Iraq war more if the US had gotten international backing, but she avoided any direct criticism of the war, Bush, or her successor, Collen Powell (whose statements on Iraq and other wars sound all too similar to her own).

In a "60 Minutes" Interview on May 12, 1996, Lesley Stahl asked then Secretary of State Albright about US sanctions on Iraq. "We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And -- and you know, is the price worth it?" Madeleine Albright responded "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price -- we think the price is worth it." On Kosovo, so determined was she that nothing would get in the way of military action that she asked Congress to cancel its March 11 debate on the subject, claiming that it could cause divisions within NATO.
