13 ARRESTED AS SAFEWAY PROTESTS HEAT UP

For the second time in ten weeks, union activists shut down Safeway’s flagship Oakland store on Jan. 31. Activists, including union leaders Judy Goff, Labor Council; Matt Bell, UFCW Local 324, Orange County; Tom Rankin, California Labor Federation; Barry Luboviski, Building Trades; Chuck Mack, Teamsters; Fred Pecker and Brian McWilliams, ILWU; Jim Dupont, Stephanie Ruby, and Andy Lee, HERE 2850; faith leader Rev. Carol Been, Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice; and Oakland Vice Mayor Ignacio De La Fuente joined in civil disobedience and were arrested.

More than 500 marchers rallied at Mosswood Park, where Supervisor Nate Miley and Dr. Alice Chen urged support for Measure A to protect essential healthcare in Alameda County. Three members of Local 324, on strike now for 115 days, cheered as Rev. Been and Rev. Rick Schlosser, executive director of the California Council of Churches, pledged the faith community’s support for the healthcare fight.

THREE WAYS YOU CAN HELP NOW

1) Join the Friday night picketline at the Broadway Safeway, 5130 Broadway (corner of 51st Street in Oakland), from 5 to 7 pm.

2) Adopt-A-Store near you and picket during peak hours. Call Mike or Joe at 632-4242 for information and materials.

3) Send a financial contribution to Striker Support Fund, 8530 Stanton Av., Buena Park CA 90622. Individual contributions mean a lot to striking and locked-out families. Union donations mean solidarityÿ¿because you could be next!
