US Marine Conscientious Objector to Speak at Forum

by Wendy (uhurureparations [at] yahoo.com)
Stephen Funk, US Marine Conscientious Objector will make a statement in solidarity with the peace movement at forum, "Where is the Peace Movement Going?"
Where is the Peace Movement Going? A Forum on Peace and Social Justice SPECIAL HONORED GUEST- Stephen Funk - U.S. Marine Conscientious Objector Tuesday, APRIL 8TH 2003 7-10PM Fellowship Hall 390-27th St. Oakland 510-625-1106 reparations_sfbay@yahoo.com $5-25 dollar donation requested leaflet: http://www.geocities.com/thew94610/peacemovement.pdf Invited Orgs and Individuals: Omali Yeshitela, Chairman of the African People s Socialist Party International A.N.S.W.E.R Quetzaoceloaciua, Barrio Defense Committee Angelica Cabande, Filipinos for Global Justice, Not War Global Exchange Noura Erakat, Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Penny Hess, African People s Solidarity Committee Direct Action to Stop the War People s Non Violence Response Coalition Dear Peace Activists, With the U.S. declaration of war against Iraq and the blanket "war on terrorism" threatening the livelihood of the world s people, we believe we must address essential questions about the nature of the anti-war movement we are building. A division has surfaced in the anti-war movement nationwide which has raised grave questions for some people: Is there room for Africans, Asians, Arabs, Indians, Mexicans and other non-white people in the peace movement? Is there room for the issues that impact on their lives that go beyond the questions of pacifism, supporting U.S. troops, and patriotism? Are we willing to acknowledge the war on oppressed Peoples within the borders of the United States at the same time that we seek to stop the war in Iraq? We believe that these questions must be addressed if we are to build a truly inclusive and effective anti-war movement in this country. We believe genuine peace will only come as a consequence of justice and freedom for the peoples of the world. We believe the economic and poltical situation we exist in today constitutes a global slave plantation, in which most of the human family is colonized, brutalized and terrorized so that their resources and labor go to benefit the few. No peace can exist under these conditions. We hope you will join us on Tuesday April 8th to discuss there critical issues in the context of our struggle. Let us build a peace movement that can not only stop the war in Iraq, but ensure peace for all people for all time. Uhuru Means Freedom!
