Casualties WALK Monday 3/31 AM

by Andrew Rose (andrewnewkirkrose [at] yahoo.com)
About 40 people this morning around
7AM put on white face paint and walked in
double file around downtown in about 5 seperate
groups. We each had an individualized sign that
said Collateral Damage # 23, killed in Basra, on
3/28/03 or whatever. This was put together by
an affinity group called greenies4peace, I believe.
tactic note: the ferry building disgourges passengers by the boat load between 8AM and 9AM, there
are lots of people around Justin Herman plaza before
corporate work hour (around 9.30) so no need to
venture to far for the morning action if that's the folks
you want to be seen by.

I met with about 40 people this morning around
7AM and we put on white face paint and walked in
double file around downtown in about 5 seperate
groups. We each had an individualized sign that
said Collateral Damage # 23, killed in Basra, on
3/28/03 or whatever. There were signs representing 'coalition forces' and signs for Iraqi people. This was put together by
an affinity group loosely connected with greenpeace.
it was cool. We were attacked 3 times, twice
physically. One dude bolted down the middle through
our group. Another dude pushed the last person in the
line as we went past. A third (all older white men)
said "you people are idiots, you people are idiots"
safety in numbers I guess. Lots of peace signs from
friendly folks also.

Since my first reaction is to flip the mean people off and start yelling at them I'm realizing how difficult it is to be compassionate towards them. For real. Harldy seems worth the effort. Trying though.

There was one pro-Bush group carrying a US flag,
about 4 young male adults and some women and
a car load of kids. We acknowledged each other without any words exchanged.

Action will repeat at lunchtime and evening commute
time.
