Dr. King: Beyond Vietnam // April 4, 1967 speech (mp3)

by ziggy
King's anti-war, anti-imperialisim speech; high technical quality mp3 recording
mlk011703ao0hnv.jpg"

Dr. King's "Beyond Vietnam" speech was arguably his most visionary and broadly focus sermon. It was delivered at Riverside Church in New York on April 4, 1967, exactly one year before he was assassinated.

Even though the speech is public domain property found at many locations on the net, this particular recording comes from Alternative Radio. I've listened to a few of the versions around the net, and this one has relatively high technical quality. It's also the entire speech, as best as I can tell. There are many versions that have a few minutes edited out.

It runs for just under an hour, and the mp3 file is 24.1 megs.

PDF transcript available here:

Note: It might have some differences from the recording. I haven't checked.

The transcript comes from the official Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project website:

... hmmm, when was the last time i heard such a speech, by a leader, a politician, a general, a writer, a poet, anybody?

never. cause they don't talk like that anymore.

the speeches by the so called "great men and women" of our times are emasculated. vacuous. dishonest. disingenuous. boring. they say abosolutely nothing. they mean nothing.

i can't tell what the problem is today, in 2003. is it because there are no great men or women on this earth to give a great speech? is it because we have become afraid to speak with our whole heart behind the things we say? is it because the things we say don't mean shit anyways, so how could they possibly be rousing or meaningful? just full of bullshit jargon and newspeak and two faced double talk. is it because the people who give speeches are always playin some angle and putting on some spin and looking to sell something and looking to hide something, so of course they'll sound fake. why the fuck can't "our so-called" leaders write speeches that say something meaningful, that people will listen to some 40 years later?

maybe they are afraid of being asassinated... cause you can never become too good a leader in this country. you always end up dead....

maybe they don't have anything to say. and everything to hide...

Dr. King's vision is enormous, he sees all and speaks truth. It is amazing to me how relevant his comments are today as we prepare to wage unilateral war against Iraq. Why is our nation ruled by greed, is capitalism, in spite of the "quality of life" advances it has brought, a flawed economic policy that allows rampant military supported exploitation of resources and people for financial gain? And, I am convinced our government assasinated Dr. King...face it, people, we do not live in an Athenian democracy. Shame on us, shame on propaganda, shame on ignorance.

After listening to the speech with a transcript, there are a few edits made, for instance, remarks on anti-communism, like this passage about 3/4 of the way through:

We must not engage in a negative anticommunism, but rather in a positive thrust for democracy, realizing that our greatest defense against communism is to take offensive action in behalf of justice. We must with positive action seek to remove those conditions of poverty, insecurity, and injustice, which are the fertile soil in which the seed of communism grows and develops.

It is, indeed, a powerful speech, and startlingly relevant and prescient. I was particularly struck by his comments about a wider struggle and against overseas investments.
