CARACAS, Venezuela, Jan. 12 -- Venezuelan troops fired tear gas today to disperse tens of thousands of protesters as President Hugo Chavez ordered a crackdown against a six-week-old opposition strike that is bleeding the economy.
Chavez warned opponents he would not let them disrupt schools, banks or food supplies with the strike, which has already crippled shipments by the world's No. 5 oil exporter.
"They want to break us economically. They are not going to do it. I swear it by God and my mother," Chavez said during his weekly television and radio show.
During his broadcast, Chavez signed a decree creating a special government commission to combat a tax rebellion announced by opposition leaders. By urging Venezuelans not to pay taxes, the strikers hope to cut government revenue already drained by the oil strike.
The president, elected in 1998, said the strike was costing the country tens of millions of dollars a day. Chavez, who has already fired 2,000 striking state oil employees, repeated threats to send troops to take over private factories and warehouses if they hoarded food supplies.
He also threatened to revoke the broadcasting licenses of private TV stations that criticize his rule. He described their hostile programming as "worse than an atomic bomb."

The world is a small box with buttons labeled On, Off, Channel, Mute, Volume, plus numbers from one to nine and zero.
On is always activated.
Off is forbiden to push it. They say that when you push it, the world disappears. They say that also disappears who presses it.
Push any of the numbers. In the screen appears the reality, that is footbridges, studies, sets for interviewed people and cardboard mansions.
Push another number. Into the screen the humanity bursts in, that is speakers, announcers in spangles, models in tangas, offerers and candidates to Miss Little Princess.
Push the remaining numbers. In the other channel wisdom shines, that is astrologers and fortune tellers that commercialize your destiny.
In other channel they teach healthful habits to you: junk food, sodas with cancerigenic, alcoholic beverages disguised as sodas.
In other channel you learn science, that is to say, secret ingredients of the shampoo that attracts all the women, the deodorant that guarantees your ascents and the formula to reduce your weight without exercises nor diet.
In other channel they inform to you about productive activities, such as raffles, lottery, quinos, duplexes, bingos, casinos, race courses and extraordinary drawings.
In other channel they train you in human relations, that is emotional blackmail of the ingenuous one that manipulates to marry with the multimillionaire, the cruelty of the stepmother that excludes from the testament the heirs and the undressed natural daughter of its fortune while his lovely mother agonizes.
In other channel you learn the essence of success, that is to say, consumption.
In other channel one identifies the enemy, that is the poors, badly worn, toothless, badly dressed, partially or totally paralyzed and trained to applaud and to be in ridiculous situation in the programs of contests or pretended confessions.
In other channel it is summoned justice and laws in the form of commandos, superheroes and private avengers who eliminate whichever poor who does not applaud.
In other channel are solved social problems by means of telethons, charitable rallys and absence of mention of whom is not telegenic.
In other channel you follow the news, that is the aspirations of the owners of media presented like facts.
In other channel your new political leaders arise, taking oath of fidelity to the channels that chose them in Reality Shows by means of measurements of rating and audience researches.
In other channels pluralism is pronounced, that is, the right to find the same lie in thousand different screens.
Then you understand that the control controls to you.
You disconnect it, and you obtain the wonderful gift of the world.

Two examples:
In this article (after a meeting declaration by Venezuela's president):
... who has already fired 2,000 striking state oil employees, ...
Said just yesterday at OPEC meeting by State-owned PDVSA's president (as reflected by
Dow Jones ):
... "A thousand employees have already been fired and we will construct a new company," he said.
Another example, In a television speech transmitted by CNN, the president roughly said
... I've been informed that as of today, the production level has reached 1.5mm bpd ...
The very same day, Energy minister said
... The production has reached 600k bpd...
PDVSA's president said
... We recover production to up to 450k bpd...
On strike employees said production is maintained almost constant (at about 350k bpd) since the beginning of the strike.
One week later, trying to produce anger in a meeting, the president said.
... As you know, during December, plotters only allowed to produce 150k bpd...
Your conclusions?
He must go down along with his tugs!.
He lied to the people of Venezuela about helping the poor and fight corruption when he was elected president. A liar just like Hussein, North Korea, kastro, China, and other corrupt politicians that are hungry for absolute power. He uses propaganda and machivaelli tactics adopting the charisma a of Adolf Hitler,Napoleon and Fidel Castro.

It seems that you should also investigate about Chavez´s continuous efforts to divide the country and to use our oil money in many corrupt activities. Also, you could interview PDVSA people and they could give you a clear perspective on how he has given oil to Cuba by FREE and has engaged in other non clear activities. He has defended people that have killed innocent protesters. He has forced the country to this situation.
The opposition is not forcing kids to watch TV advertising. That´s a very simplistic way of putting the intense crisis we are facing in Venezuela. We are in a strike, in many areas, because we believe in a democratic solution via elections.

Venezuelan Political Crisis
Johanna, I am currently in the middle of a struggle of which you surely have very little notice, I said so because probably almost nobody in the general public of Venezuela knows about this struggle.
In 1997, all the indians of Bolivar state, lots of different communities, different ethnic groups, Pemon, Arawako, Karin~a , etc, were ALL UNITED against a project of Power Line to Brazil.
Caldera was the president who started this project, and CVG state owned corporation together with ABB private corporation started the construction of this power line.
All the indians closed the road of Gran Sabana (the only road venezuela-brasil), protested, marched in Caracas, etc, everything they could do to stop this project. And they were with some hope to stop it, because every indian was united aginst it, the had assamblies, they were in constant communication between communities of all Bolivar state, etc.
Chavez went to be president, he keep the same plans of Caldera, to continue the power line to Brazil... And he did as he does all time: he never talked in person to indians, trying to solve this power line thing, instead, as he always do, sent his trusted persons to defeat opposition to his plans as it have been since he is president. The persons Chavez sent to talk with indians were Isaias Rodriguez (then he was Vice-President of Venezuela) and ministry Ana Elisa Osorio, they did very obscure and corrupted moves in which they managed, with Jose Luis Gonzalez -indian parlamentary-, to get some indian chiefs to sign an 'accord' betwenn goverment and indians to pass ok the power line to Brazil.
So, summarizing, Chavez divided all the indians, now in Bolivar State there are indians who love Chavez and the 'progress' he brings with electricity from this power line, more penetration roads to the jungle, more jobs for indians as gold and diamond miners, more alcohol, more prostitues, etc, and in the other hand we have indians who still are against chavez and all this projects and corruption that he plans to bring to the jungles...
What I want to say you, electronic-friend Johanna is that I already know in the flesh about Chavez's continuos efforts to divide the country, he divided forever all the indians of Venezuela, as any colony does... and also I know well his corrupted and obscure moves. He, or his system, is defending the asshole of Sargent Jonathan Ortiz of the jungle army, who is completely free working in his military base as usual, after he cold blooded assasinated my best indian friend Miguel Lanz. With tears in my eyes I told you that I also know in my heart that Chavez, or his system, defend people like the Sargent Jonathan Ortiz who assasinated the indian Miguel Lanz who was protesting all his life against improper developments in the jungles and savannahs of Venezuela.
About PDVSA people, my brother studied in M.I.T., and he is a manager of PDVSA-Pequiven, but I have no contact with him since 2 years ago, I don't know which position he may have now in this situation of PDVSA-Chavez, but I
will try to ask him about oil to Cuba, because he is the only manager of PDVSA that actually in this situation I can trust. I promise you to ask him, but, also I know that in Cuba are 3 pemon indians who live in communities near my home, who are studying medicine for free in Cuba, here in Santa Elena Hospital is a Cuban doctor, and he besides his work at the hospital, he goes at communities to attend indians there for free, because he is a great person, we have been in close contact and I know him as a person, Maybe you are only seeing half of the reality, there are small oil shipments
to Cuba, who knows the reality of the price or if it is a gift?, but here in the jungles Cuba is giving medical care to indians for free...
About other non-clear activities, I know for sure very of these, regarding environment and indians, chavez is no doing right, but that is matter of another discussion and right now is not the moment in venezuela for it.
The opposition is not forcing to see TV, is true, but a children all the day doing nothing thanks to schools closed due to the strike, is all the time sent by his parents to watch TV in order to be calm and no bother too much at home...
The only simplistic way I am using now, is to understand that even when Chavez has fucked my country a lot, and my struggle against him will never end, the ones that are behind this problems now in Venezuela are persons worst than 1,000,000 Chavez put togheter in the same room.

"The president, elected in 1998, said the strike was costing the country tens of millions of dollars a day.
( But I thought only a few people supported this? How can it be costing that much money?) Chavez, who has already fired 2,000 striking state oil employees,
(All "Rich" right...?)repeated threats to send troops to take over private factories and warehouses if they hoarded food supplies.
He also threatened to revoke the broadcasting licenses of private TV stations that criticize his rule. (NICE AND DEMOCRATIC, HUH? You criticize him, you're off the air...) He described their hostile programming as "worse than an atomic bomb." (It is called free speech, BTW, Mr. Chavez....)
Just my thoughts....

Environmentalist in Venezuela are planning to work hard to see if thanks to this PDVSA-crisis we manage to do some good for Maracaibo lake, but if the goverment only uses us now because he needs to link environment with politics for electoral milliage, then we will tell the world as we always have done. Maybe now is a little hope that PDVSA can be better now than in the last 40 years of envirionmental caos. I promise, if Chavez is only using us ecologists now that he needs us, then i will say so too.
But now, PDVSA managers are in the black list of ecologists, and they will pass to history as eco-terrorist saboteurs.
About the other guy Robert that said that How democratic is that Chavez wants to take away the media concession, well, what do you think George W. Bush will do if, lets say....... CBS or FOX starts to say that he(Bush) is a fag, or is friend and married to Osama Bin Laden, i doubt that Bush will let them keep open and spreading that out, BTW, there is a BIG DIFERENCE between FREEDOM OF SPEECH and ABUSE OF SPEECH and the state has the right to revoke the concesions to the media(and the constitution that everybody aproved allows it) if the start to make ABUSE OF SPEECH and make difamation. About the social division it always existed, how many ive listened how ppl says: "Fucking Black" and things like that. That Chavez make the social division worst? maybe, but the opossition is not helping by firing someone cuz is Chavizta (like someone did). By the way, how democratic is that in a rich neiborhood ppl of the oposition is marking the apartment of the ppl that is Chavizta so they can be identified, how democratic is that the oposition publishes in boards in front of restaurants the adress, the phone number, the I.D. number of ppl that likes Chavez. The oposition also started to shoot to the house of one of the new executives, how pacific is that? if that is the peace and the democracy that they propose then i think that i prefer to stay with the "Castro-Comunist-Dictatorship of Chavez were NOONE goes to jail and you can isult the president everytime i want on tv and make an strike everytime i want" goverment.
P.S. to Rigoberto: all that u said sounds more like a Tom Clancy's novel than reallity. YOU HAVE ANY PROOF OF ALL YOU SAY?, No?. If the millions dollar to Bin Laden were true a long time ago USA would take down Chavez. The 18$billion that you said he(suposely) stollen then the ppl that were in power during all this 40 years of "democracy" must be as rich as Bill Gates.
And the real ppl hungry of power is the same that you are defending now.
