Fresh Aradia Photos
The Aradia tree-sit has been ongoing since December of 2001, just up the ridge from where David "Gypsy" Chain was killed, on September 17th, 1998.
The Aradia tree-sit has been going on, off and on, since September of 1998. In fact, David "Gypsy" Chain was helping to bottomline ground support for Aradia in the week before he was killed. Also, a PL worker came up to Aradia and communicated with the tree-sitters just after Gypsy's untimely death, making Aradia a very historical tree, with respect to Gypsy.
Activists came down from Aradia in early 1999, at the end of the original Gypsy Mountain Free State, believing that she was no longer in danger.
Then, right around the out-of-court settlement from the Gypsy wrongful death civil suit, and the formation of the Forest Peace Alliance, a new timber harvest plan was marked and filed on Gypsy Mountain, including Aradia.
When the THP was discovered, some evidence of malicious intention were also found. A hand, flipping us off, was spray painted on Tara, an Old Growth Redwood just above the site where Gypsy was killed, with the words, "To Luna," spray painted with the same paint used to mark THPs. A similar hand was also found on a rug used to cover a sweat lodge that was built and used in March of 2000.
Also, in 2000, a few trees, which would have been part of the Gypsy Memorial, were cut while we witnesses were doing our depositions with Maxxam lawyers, in a stuffy Eureka lawyers' office. The Gypsy Memorial, up on Gypsy Mountain, is 100 feet of protection in all directions from the tree that was fallen on Gypsy, which still lies where it was fallen on David.
While it may not have been the will or malicious intention of everyone at Maxxam/Pacific Lumber, it is obvious that someone, or a few somebodies in charge, are carrying out a vendetta against Earth First!, working against the spirit of the Forest Peace Alliance.
We are asking that Aradia, plus a buffer zone, be permanently protected, at least, and we would prefer that the whole timber harvest plan be thrown out, so that Gypsy Mountain can be preserved.
