yeah - around the time of the David Horowitz ridiculousness (those young republicans actually put Grad student Jose Palafox under citizen's arrest for criticizing their ridiculous level of security and he was transported to jail and kept for a night), all these insane people on the level of 'Clam' joined this inconsequential chatboard at http://www.bestofberkeley.com Most of them are from around the country, but they all spend about 5 hours a day on this site criticizing UC Berkeley even though no students post.

Oh, I remember who Rory Miller is. I saw him at a city council meeting shortly after the current war started when the Berkeley council was set to vote on a fairly mild resolution stating that the city hopes that the current war will end as soon and peacefully as possible. Fox News and others decided to present it as though we were all pro-al Qaeda, but it was a bust from the point of the view of the media. I talked to a journalist. The council chambers was barely filled, and the citizens had not turned out to really weigh in on the issue - there were a lot more who showed up about the zoning laws relating to a new religious hall two weeks previous. I was just there to recommend a bicycle lane on Shattuck.
Anyway, there was a super-high wingnut density - with most of them conservatives actually. There was this guy, Eric Bjeckford, who believes in UFOs and bigfoot etc. Very conservative - and he started yelling at people:

He looked sort of low self-esteem - sort of like you'd imagine the typical teenage Ayn Rand fan. Anyway, he started giving this bizarre speech about how Kriss Worthington was in support of the antiwar resolution because he wanted to increase tourism to Berkeley. This didn't make sense. Worthington rhetorically wrapped Miller into a little wad and tossed him away because what he was saying just wasn't true - because if someone says 'X says this', and X is present but says that they don't think that at all, you can't really go forward with the argument.

I am very proud of my son Rory and his accomplishments at Bezerkeley. I am fully supportive of his efforts to breathe some sense and balance into the sordid leftist political atmosphere of the campus. I am extremely proud of his sense of pride in being an American. Rory is among the few students over there who have the knowledge and sense to know that the very lifeblood of personal and intellectual freedom in which you douse yourselves daily came from the "dead white males (and females) of the classical western civilizations (read as Greece, Rome and Christian/Catholic northeastern Europe) that he studies. For those who wish to make a denigration of me by saying "rich" and implying some sort of heritage of unearned inherited wealth(ala the Kennedys), please let me inform you of some family history.

I am a dentist, upper, middle class and damned proud of it. I am the product of Midwestern public school education BEFORE the liberals dumbed everything down. My paternal grandfather owned a small business that went bankrupt during the great depression. My mother was sent to live with relatives in Canada because the family was too poor to support three kids. My father served in WWII on B17 bombers and was the only survivor of the 33 crewmen he served with. All the others gave their lives so you could be the self centered people you are today.(Rent the movie "Memphis Belle" for a taste of his life) My father was a Sergeant and flight crew chief who had three planes shot out from under him. He was awarded 2 Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and other decorations for service to his country. He spent 8 months in an Army hospital in Britain after being pulled barely alive from the English Channel. Rory's great grandfather was a printer for a newspaper. His grandfather (my Dad) was the first family member to graduate from college. I am the first to have an advanced degree. My father was killed in an accident while I was a freshman in college. I put myself through Washington University St. Louis by working 3-4 jobs and going to school. I worked 5 summers in a papermill, six days a week. I put myself through graduate school earning a Masters in Cell Biology and then Dental School. I have practiced dentistry for over 20 years...mostly in a blue collar racially mixed area of Sacramento. I have risen to become a nationally known dental author and educator. I am successful and proud of it by providing high quality health care to average patients. I start treating patients at AM, a time of day you liberal snots only see while pulling all nighters.

Rory's maternal great-grandparents were a nurse and a policeman. They are Irish and Czech. Their parents came through Ellis Island. His grandfather was college educated, also on the GI bill. The grandparents live a upper middle class life that is freely available to anyone wishing to work hard in this country. Where to begin? First, I do study Classical Languages. I'm impressed that these people have such disdain for a traditional, liberal education. I wonder if they have the same disrespect for other even more usless majors like Ethnic Studies or Womens' Studies. Probably not. Second, I'm amazed that people on a site that regularly is home to conspiracy theories and UFO sighting reports considers me "naive to the real world." As for my ridiculous upper class name, let's go through it one by one, shall we? Rory is one of the more common Irish names. If you can find the telephone directory for a slum in Dublin, look through it. You'll find plenty of Rorys. My middle name, as they post later, is Stuart. This is, as far as I can tell, part of Scot heritage I have from my father. We're not Stuarts, and we're not royalty. Furthermore, there's plenty of low-lifes named "Stu" around. I'm betting the Dell guy in those commercials is named Stu. Finally, Miller is such and upper class name. I mean, what's more uppity than having an ancestor who worked in a grain mill four or five hundred years ago? And, for the "long line" they speak of, as far as I know, my grandfathers were the first in our family to be college educated, and that was thanks to the GI Bill after World War Two. If that's a long line, so be it.

Yet another example of the tolerant and accepting nature of indymedia people. For the record, I am 20 years old, and I am quite large, though I would dispute the term "round" in favor of "barrel." As for pampered, well, not particularly. I didn't have it rough by any means, though I also was disgusted at the excesses of some of my classmates' lives. I wonder where he got the low self-esteem part from. If anyone is interested, e mail me and I'll provide you a computer version of the video of that council meeting. You can decide for yourself. Additionally, I share many common points with the randroids, although I only read one of her books, Atlas Shrugged and only recently. As for what I said about tourism and Kriss Worthington, I would like to quote this Daily Cal article: "This sort of proposal [the city council's anti-war resolution], he said, plays into the 'Berserkeley' image that attracts national attention to the city and benefits the economy. '"Tourists come to Berkeley because of all the attention the bastion of liberalism generates,' Worthington said." After I brought that up, he backpedaled, as Dona Spring, another councilwoman had done. Polly Armstrong actually called him on that, but her remark was struck from the record as "personal." Was he trying to profit from the antiwar vote? I'll leave that up to Clam readers. We all know the Indymedia people won't bother to be swayed from their "he's so stupid and weird" stance by that quote (which, incidentally was the source of my charge).

Interestingly enough, over 75% of all the hits I got from Indymedia were from computers running Windows XP. The balance was from Windows 98 users (except for one macintosh). I'm glad to see all these anti-capitalists striking back against the Microsoft corporate empire.

I use my real name, not a cute, hip pen name. For the record, Rory's mother has nothing to do with these posts. And concern the little remark about class warfare. the real struggle is not class warfare, but the continuing battle for personal freedom, a rare quality thoughout the history of mankind. It is the battle of free men and women against those who would enslave them. The comment about "class warfare" shows that you stand with those who would enslave others in a totalitarian system where phony "group rights" supercede those of the individual. Yes, I will be on the opposing side, always fighting for the rights of individual freedom and dignity. I am proud that I can recognise the difference between the sides of this battle.

Please, people, show a little common sense. I'm another friend of the infamous angry clam, Rory Miller. As a matter of fact, I am also friends with the "Bill" above at UCSD. I've also met his mom and dad (he is in fact a dentist in case anyone cares). Heck, I've met Rory's grandparents. They're all normal, nice people. Even Rory. Now for some of you who can't accept that, I'm sorry. There will be times in your life when people will have different opinions than you. Odds are, when it comes to religion and politics, you're not changing their mind. So one thing people need to learn to deal with is accepting people for who they are and looking past politics. If I hadn't done that, I would have not been Rory's friend from the moment we met under the amazing football tutelage of Phil Nuxoll. I can safely say that Rory and I, for the most part, are relatively at odds politically. We do agree on many things, however, and I feel embarrassed to be associated with any of the nincompoops on this board who might call themselves Democrats.

However, the thing that inspired me to post was not the suggestion of tolerance. That, I know, will be quickly glossed over and attacked. Heck, you might even claim that I am Rory himself. I guarantee you that Rory and David are two very separate people. We do have terrors for younger siblings though. The main point of this post rather, is to comment on the fact that while you may disagree with the politics of Mr. Miller, I hope you realize that in 5 years, he'll be making more money than you'll likely see in a long time. He's quite possibly the smartest guy I know. And working in a research lab at Berkeley, there are a lot of smart people out there. He was brought up in an upper-middle class family, and there's nothing wrong with that. If you knew anything about the high school right next to his house, you'd know that most of those upper-middle class kids fail miserably in life. They choose to get drunk, smash up their raised trucks and lowered cars, and end up unemployed at age 30. Rory has worked very hard for everything, that I guarantee you. He could have chosen any major he liked, but he chose Classics because that's what he wanted to do. Despite the fact that I won the science award from the high school we graduated from, I have no doubt that Rory could become a better scientist had he chose.

He will succeed in life, and likely many of you will not. You can blame it on his upper-middle class background, or you can blame your lack of success on yourself. If you have worked half as hard as Rory, you would be a success as well. Disagree with him if you like, and I'm sure many of you do, but realize that disagreeing with him does not predispose you to hating him. Peace.

I'm sure it might have crossed someone's mind at one point or another what exactly the "angry clam" means. The term comes from a small book called "The Angry Clam." It is quite possibly the most amazing book I've ever read, relative to its size. Let me assure you it has nothing to do with politics (maybe ever so slightly), and has mostly to do with the life of a clam. Should you ever get the chance to read it, I highly suggest it.

To Anarchy and the other whining losers who have to blame the 'system' for their failures in life:

My mother had to retire early from her job as a social worker for child protective services because of the mental and emotional stress from the job.

My Dad is broke.

I myself have worked in blue collar jobs up to now. Delivering pizza after high school, waiting tables, driving short haul freight in southern california, and working for a large parcel delivery service.

I CHOSE to do something to help make my life better, after enduring back injuries and a robbery amongst other challenges. I CHOSE to go back to school, first at a community college where i worked 60+ hours a week at 2 jobs and maintained a 3.9 gpa.

I EARNED admission into UC Berkeley, and i graduate this year with a 3.7 gpa. I worked my ass off in school at my academics and the job i have. I EARNED a scholarship to help with the expenses.

I will make a hell of a lot more money when i get a job post-school than i ever earned driving a truck. I am damn proud of what i have accomplished through hard work, mental toughness, and perseverance.

Note the word privilege is not part of my story. So, Anarchy, you and every other indymedia gutter punk can kiss my ass. While you sit around contemplating your next facial piercing or the style benefits of wearing all black clothing and not bathing, people like me, real WORKING CLASS folks are busting our rears to get ahead.
