Police Chief Resigns Amid Accusations of Racial Profiling
The city of Palo Alto announced today that its controversial police chief will retire shortly. Palo Alto is home to Stanford University and many high tech companies and is in the midst of a controversy over racial profiling sparked by statements made by Police Chief Lynne Johnson.

A demonstration pulled together on very short notice drew hundreds of protesters to the SF peninsula town of Mountain View. The Raging Grannies had to work fast to organize, but their team of *Granny Brides* were prepped for action from a similar demo a few days earlier in nearby Palo Alto. Saddened at the passage of Proposition 8, banning same-sex marriage in California, demonstrators Monday night were nonetheless hopeful that it will be invalidated. East Palo Alto Residents Ask: "Am I a Suspect?"
A pattern of racial traffic stops in Palo Alto is statistically clear.
At a *Rally Against Racial Profiling* on November 9 Goro Mitchell, East Palo Alto activist and Planning Commission member, said that 56 percent of all traffic stops for "vehicular failure", such as tail or brake lights not working, are for cars driven by African Americans or Latinos.

Peninsula Families and Church Members Hold Candles High
In Redwood City children drew No on 8 posters and held them up at a major intersection. St. Paul's Episcopal Church was well represented there.
More families and church groups showed up in Palo Alto as well, bolstered by a Stanford University contingent and the Raging Grannies who sang songs. At one point there were about 200 people present....

Backlash Against Palo Alto Police Chief
Palo Alto's police chief said that her officers would be stopping African American males to determine who they were and what they were doing in the city of Palo Alto.
Community leaders including the mayor of Palo Alto expressed shock at the chief's statement. Congresswoman Anna Eshoo said the police chief should rescind her comments and orders or resign.
A march and rally against racial profiling is scheduled for Sunday, November 9....

If the number of yard signs are any indication, residents of Palo Alto, California are strongly against Proposition 8 which would reverse the decision of the California's Supreme Court and eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. Even former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young and his wife, Barbara, both Mormons, have posted *No on 8* yard signs in front of their Palo Alto...
