EL ENEMIGO COMUN premiers in the Bay Area
"el enemigo común" scratches beneath the surface of neoliberalism, at some of the its most hidden atrocities in recent North American history. The film documents instances of paramilitary activity against indigenous communities in Oaxaca, Mexico from 2002 through 2005 while including scenes from an international human rights movement in 2003, in Miami against the Free Trade Area of the America's, and in Cancun against the World Trade Organization. The three locations in isolation expose the d...

No More Denied Students, No to Plan Juarez in Oaxaca
I was in the Carmen Plaza and I heard whistling and the chants were getting louder, “…education first for the children of the workers, educucation later for the children of the rich….” I quickly walked to encounter the march of students of the UABJO (Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca), youth no older than 25 years that were walking in two lines, in the middle of the march was the students that were carrying large signs accusing the director of the university, Neri, of using Plan J...

Boycott Gallo Wines
The workers of Gallo in Sonoma County have been fighting to improve working conditions, making strides to overcome an eight year drought in wage increases. However, while some Gallo workers now earn $8.18 an hour, have 8 days of vacation and receive health benefits for themselves and for their families, the majority do not. Those workers who have been denied these benefits are hired through farm labor contractors (FLCs), which are third party agencies. This contract loophole denies 75 percent...

Mexican Electoral Politics: the more things change, the more they stay the same
More than a year before the presidential elections, Mexican political parties are using new forms of propaganda based on the manipulation of social discontent. This is an attempt to justify the sliver of democratic credibility achieved in 2000 when the conservative National Action Party (PAN) was able to put a former Coca-Cola executive in the president's office. Thus began the age of “democratic transition” which was celebrated mostly due to the defeat of the PRI, a party that had held unint...

In-situ crop diversity, wild relatives and biotech GE pollen contamination
In-situ (on site) conservation of crop biodiversity is another answer to the fallacy of genetic engineering (GMO/GE) monoculture crops promoted by biotech corporations. Wild relatives of crops like rice and maize can be intercrossed/introgressed to increase resistance to insect pests and "weed" competition. We only need to protect the wild relatives of crops like rice, potatoes and maize.....
