On March 20 the third anniversary of the Iraq war Dan Lungren held a town hall meeting in Rancho Cordova California to talk mainly of immigration reform. Upon receiving the flyer outlining his meeting it immediately felt xenophobic, nationalistic, and reeked of racism. The flyer consisted of the American flag and it was titled, “Say no to any Amnesty guest worker proposal”. His speech and power point presentation consisted of flood protection, immigration reform, Urban Area Security Initiativ...

Students continued to walk out of school in protest of HR 4437. On Wednesday the police and school administration changed their tactics and began detaining students....

On March 25th, between 2,500 to 3,000 members of the Watsonville community joined Gold Star Families for Peace member Fernando Suarez del Solar, and Iraq War resister Pablo Paredes for the 5 mile Watsonville leg of their 241 mile peace march from Tijuana to the Mission District in San Francisco. Along with chants for peace, the marchers were taking a stand against the draconian anti-immigrant bill HR4437. Some say the march was the largest in Watsonville's history....

The legislation, entitled the “Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005” lumps different reactionary symbols together creating a powerfully xenophobic, racist, and militaristic trope. All at once it evokes themes of threatening terrorist who seek to destroy America with swift and violent action, alongside the threat of a racial other who will destroy America slowly via a silent invasion....

On Monday, March 27th, 2006, high school students went on strike to protest against HR 4437. In Watsonville, police responded by violating the civil rights of students, including detaining students at 2:00pm for "walking out of school" even though their school, Renaissance High School, had gotten out at 1:15pm. Another student at Renaissance was arrested after refusing to get on a bus. She was already out of school and did not walkout. (Audio is 18 minutes and 30 seconds)...

In Fresno, the immigrant rights marches and walkouts by high school students are growing in strength and numbers. On Monday there were over 500 students at the march and rally. Today the estimates were as high as 6,000....
