More Public Chained Off in Front of New Leaf Market at Night
For the last week or so, New Leaf Market (in collusion with the Redevelopment Agency and perhaps other local businesses) has put a chain across the public area previously open without restriction to the public at night (especially after the businessses closed). Police have stood by warning people they face possible arrest for entering the area--which takes up a large portion of the sidewalk. I encourage people to protest this closure of public space--both at City Council tomorrow (3 PM and...

Parking Lot Panic Law Up For Review 8:30 AM Thursday July 24th
The Parking Lot Panic law makes it illegal to assemble or stand or sit in a public parking lot or garage at all on pain of $100+ fine. The Wednesday Drum Circle in Parking Lot #4 successfully fought this law with direct action disobedience. However, the City is now proposing to eliminate Parking Lot #4. This is also being discussed in the same Downtown Commission meeting at 809 Center St. at City Council chambers across from the main branch of the Public Library....

85% of Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is landfill - most affected by radiological elements.
Over eighty five percent of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is landfill. Once there were two large hills that the United States Navy demolished. Then they spread the dirt all over the wetlands - creating supposedly land on which to build. With intent - they spread the remains of the Ohlone, The First People of San Francisco - thinking very little of desecration. The two hills were Shellmounds - Sacred Burial Grounds of the Muwekma Ohlone. Today, this desecration will come to haunt - those th...

"Homeless Court" : Rules for Fools
Though the law library in the basement of the County building didn't initially have any info, they graciously got the Judge's Chambers to fax over the following document--which defines the rules for Santa Cruz's "Homeless Court". "Homeless Court" is the skeletonic grinning mask of "compassion" that Santa Cruz County wears over its gruesome pointless life-threatening anti-homeless ordinances (the Sleeping, Sitting, Sparechanging, Blanket, Parking Lot Bans)...

George Bush is Vetoed by Congress ending the 10.6% Medicare reimbursement to doctors.
Overriding a presidential veto, federal lawmakers late Tuesday protected doctors from a 10.6 percent cut in Medicare reimbursement rates. The move will halt the reimbursement cuts in 2008 and gives doctors a 1.1 percent increase in Medicare reimbursement rates in 2009. The bill also increases bonuses paid to doctors in rural areas.
