Just over a year ago, on April 5, 2005, Students Against War organized over 300 students to kick military recruiters (and the CA Dept. of Corrections, randomly) out of a campus job fair. It was a starting point for many things on the UC Santa Cruz campus. It was the first major event in a whole Spring of radical actions that shook the school, as it was the first opportunity for many students to realize their own power. The protest also landed the students on a list of "credible threats&q...

textBersamin: Brown Berets Were "Thin Brown Line" That Kept The Peace by Manuel Bersamin / Sentinel

textAnti-Homeless "Parking Lot Peril" Law at Council 3 PM 4-11 by Robert Norse
Ignoring public requests for a thorough examination of alternatives, lacking substantiation that there's a "crime wave" downtown, reversing decades of Santa Cruz traditional use, directly targeting the homeless, but impacting every member of the community, Councilmember Coonerty's "Fifteen Minute Trespass" law will slide through City Council Tuesday Aprill 11th shortly after 3 PM. Be there to give them some indigestion as they chew up and swallow public spaces and human r...

textSAW to protest Military Recruiters on April 11 by Students Against War
SAW will protest military recruitment and the Iraq war on April 11. Protest is at McHenry Library, starting at 9AM. This event comes after April 5, 2005's counter-recruitment action for which SAW was labeled a "credible threat" by the Pentagon and the October 18, 2005 Queer kiss-in. This year SAW approached the Administration with some reasonable suggestions as to how a peaceful protest can occur without disrupting the rest of the career fair. These suggestions have not been adopted...

textThe Man Made Plagues by Michael Treis
In 1992 I walked into the University of North Dakota Library to do some research of Congressional documents. I remember quite well the bitter cold of -40 below 0 and wind chills that would freeze you to the bone with some speed. However this cold is a warm summer day at the beach, in comparison to the documents I found....

textNo yellow ribbons from this ex-marine by populist
We can and should support troops-to-be, but do so before they become troops. We should post a warning sign, and disclaimer, in all recruiting stations. Prospective enlistees should be told that their new employer will not be the Department of Defense, but the Department of War; and that their service will not be in the defense of freedom and democracy, but in the building of an empire for America's powerful elite. And that their countrymen, for all the yellow ribbons and pseudo-patriotic talk...

Homeland Security official caught in child porn sting....a.k.a. It's Times Like These I Especially Appreciate The Police and Prisons!! Yet another reason why we need a system of firm checks and balances in all forms of government. Kudos to this Police Dept. that was not intimidated to take on Homeland Security: the President's personal security force who have the guts to issue "security memos" even though they always seem to have their head up their ass.
