Ma Trounces Reilly, But Eviction Disclosure Only San Francisco Measure to Pass
San Francisco saw some surprises last night, perhaps the biggest being the margin by which Fiona Ma defeated her opponent, Janet Reilly, in the race for the California Assembly seat. In a big day for Asian candidates, Ma joined Leland Yee, a candidate for the State Senate, and Lillian Sing, a candidate for judge, in landslide wins. The likely defeat of Prop. A also presented a surprise, which many thought would win easily, while a win for Prop. B and big losses for Props. C and D surprised no...

The Big Winners and Losers on June 6
There was much to learn from Tuesday’s election results, and while some politicians and constituencies deserve to be gleeful, others are not thrilled with the lesson. The biggest surprise in San Francisco was the failure of the city’s progressive forces to mobilize voters. This led to the defeat of the anti-violence measure, Prop A, and to a surprisingly close victory for the eviction protection measure, Prop B. Leland Yee and Fiona Ma won far more easily than expected, and Mayor Newsom and S...

Fresno Elections - Progressives Make No Gains
Fresno County progressives and their candidates did not fair well in the Tuesday, June 6, 2006 primary elections. What went wrong? Was there a silver lining? What lessons have we learned? The photo below is Fresno City Council candidate Scott Miller, who was in the Gay Pride Parade last Saturday. Miller will face Blong Xiong in the November runoff....

6/6 Election: SF Tenants Prevail
The California governor's primary of 2006 has clearly demonstrated that the party regulars, who always turn out for these primaries, despise challengers and prefer the reactionary status quo, and this is certainly true for the Democrats. The brightest result is clearly a victory for the workingclass of San Francisco, in particular, the 2/3 of the residents who are tenants with the passage of Prop. B....

Election Predictions
Picking election winners typically requires a foreseeable voter turnout, something lacking on June 6. Also absent this election cycle are the large grassroots campaigns which give activists a better sense of political reality than that offered by political science professors and other pundits. Add a State Senate and Assembly race split between San Francisco and San Mateo counties, and the always volatile racial dynamics surrounding these races, and the conventional rules for election analysis...

The Back-Scratchers of San Francisco Attempt Denial of Democracy
On Tuesday, 6-6-6, San Franciscans have yet another opportunity to chart the course of our city and state by passing social justice initiatives and demand accountability from the mayor. I’m talking about The City’s Prop B that will require property sellers to disclose to potential buyers of TICs if the Ellis Act has been used as a weapon to evict seniors or disabled tenants from their homes. I’m talking about Prop C that will require the Mayor to become directly involved in meetings regarding...

Merchants, Misinformation, and the Future of San Francisco Transit
Anyone who’s ever tried to use public transit to get to and from the Richmond knows what they face – busses that don’t come on time, run slow, and remain consistently overcrowded. To attack the problem, the San Francisco Transportation Authority recently initiated a study that takes a cue from some of the best transit systems in the world. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), which designates a lane for buses, improves bus stops, and speeds the whole system up, is currently being considered for the Geary...

Why you really should consider voting this Tuesday, even if you're an anarchist
Santa Cruz County sits on the brink between some progressive breakthroughs or environmental degradation. At the county level, there will be a power vacuum when 3rd District Supervisor, Mardi Wormhoudt, leaves her seat. Will Santa Cruz follow a progressive, sustainable path or will it yield to the millions of dollars offered by developers and megamalls who have been licking their chops in anticipation of this moment? Cast your vote this TUESDAY, JUNE 6th.

Keeping Long Term Care for Elders and Disabled is Not Discriminatory
The City of San Francisco and downtown business has cut and eliminated services for the mentally ill and for substance abusers for years. Now they want to stop doing long-term-care for seniors and disabled, and are using a bogus issue of discrimination to split our communities apart and keep us from supporting each other. If we fall for this ruse, we will regret it....

Chronicle Slants News to Boost Westly
On the eve of the June 6 election, the San Francisco’s Chronicle’s crack investigative team of Carla “I love Arnold” Marinucci and John Wildermuth have made banner headlines by highlighting that Phil Angelides received millions from his close friend and longtime ally, Sacramento developer Angelo Tskakopoulous. The Chronicle hopes voters believe that there is something sinister about Tskakopoulous’s contributions, even suggesting that Angelides would be put “in the developer’s back pocket.” Wh...
