San Francisco, California (April 10, 2006) – About five thousand people marched this evening through San Francisco’s Mission District in support of immigrant rights. From 16th Street to 24th Street, thousands of immigrant workers, families, youth, and supporters marched down the middle of Mission Street. Watsonville's Mayor Pro Tempore Manuel Bersamin writes a brilliant defense of and praise for student demonstrators and Brown Berets. This ran in the Santa Cruz Sentinel and is the most progressive and intelligent article I think I've ever read from that paper....

Eighth grader Anthony Soltero shot himself through the head on Thursday, March 30, after the assistant principal at De Anza Middle School told him that he was going to prison for three years because of his involvement as an organizer of the April 28 school walk-outs to protest the anti-immigrant legislation in Washington. The vice principal also forbade Anthony from attending graduation activities and threatened to fine his mother for Anthonys truancy and participation in the student protests...

On Friday, March 31st, thousands of students from local schools, including Watsonville High, Pajaro Valley High, Aptos High and Renaissance High, marched and rallied against HR 4437 in Watsonville.
In anticipation of the walkout, both Pajaro Valley High and Watsonville High decided to close their school doors in an effort to keep students safe.
