State of California Sues Diebold for Fraud
9/7/04: After some bad news for e-voting activists β a judge in Maryland threw out a request for a preliminary injunction against Diebold's machines, and the State of California dropped a criminal investigation into the firm β the California Attorney General announced that he is suing Diebold for fraudulent claims he alleges the company made with regards to its electronic voting machines.
Although Diebold apparently isn't too concerned about the barrage of lawsuits it faces, e-voting activists hope the state lawsuit will pave the way for some progress towards a verifiable voting system, after the state and Diebold rushed headlong into a voting scenario with untested technology and no paper trail. Last year, state officials blasted Diebold for installing uncertified software installed on machines used in primary elections and banned Diebold's AcuVote-TSx voting machines from the November elections. RNC Coverage: 9/1 & 9/2 - Protests against Corporate Media, Huge Labor Actions & Legal Battles with NYC
9/15: Report from a Medic
9/10: The RNC will not confirm or deny reports that it rented the contaminated Pier 57 holding area for detained protesters used by the NYPD. Report from "Gitmo on the Hudson"
9/1: - Bush arrived in NYC tonight and his planned photo-op in Queens was canceled because of potential protesters. Protesting against corporate media, The March on the Media, which was sponsored by FAIR and Paper Tiger Television, was a spirited gathering of more than 2,000 people who opposed the media's role in governmental policy in calling for war. Photos: 1 | 2
A Big Day For Labor - In the morning, protesters who were holding pink slips reading βThe Next Pink Slip Might be Yours!β created a line stretching three miles from Wall Street to Madison Square Garden. That afternoon, thousands more protested at the large labor rally held on 8th Ave. In the evening, approximately 2-300 protested outside the Copacabana, protesting Latin American RNC delegates, shouting "No more death squads, no more coke!"
Legal Updates - A legal battle is ensuing inside NYC courtrooms at the moment between the National Lawyers Guild and the City of New York. Protesters have been detained for over 48 hours -- breaking habeas corpus laws. And while judges have ruled against the city on 3 different occasions, the city remains defiant to the court-mandated immediate release of all jailed protesters.
On other legal fronts, lawyers are fighting the city against the use of a Chelsea Pier, nicknamed "toxic Guantanamo on the Hudson", for holding protesters in pens contaminated with asbestos, battery acid, used motor oil and other unknown chemicals. Medics treating people being released report chemical burns, allergic reactions, severe respiratory problems, skin infections, rashes, welts, wounds and cuts -- all caused by the grossly unsanitary conditions of Pier 57. Report from a jailed IMC activist | Legal Updates from Local Groups - Jail Solidarity | Fresno Activists 1 2 3 | APOC Report: People of Color Targetted at RNC Protests | 9/3: Phone Calls You Can Make to Support Arrested Protesters
9/2: - A judge fined the city $1000 per person for failing to release hundreds of protesters. Crowds have taken to streets and squares this afternoon, including a large contingent of vets at Union Square. Protesters planned to converge at the Madison Square Garden police state at 4 p.m. Pacific time as President Bush took the podium to accept his "coronation." Photos from 9/2 demonstrations

Sept. 11th: US Election Protection Volunteer Rally and Training
On September 11th, 2004, Working Assets and Mother Jones are going to sponsor an Election Protection Training at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. As the invitation to the training says, "...leaders in the civil rights community have been warning that unless tens of thousands of volunteers stand up and protect voting rights, minority voters will once again face disenfranchisement at the polls due to illegal disqualification, intimidation, and faulty voting machines. Many of us at Working Assets have pledged to travel to key states with our friends and families to help protect voting rights as volunteer poll monitors. We hope you will join us."
Working Assets, Mother Jones magazine, People For the American Way Foundation, Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Equal Justice Society, True Majority, Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities, IMPACT 2004 and others will share information about opportunities to help protect voting rights in key states on November 2. Lawyers and law students are especially needed and will receive training specific to their skill sets. All participants in this outdoor rally and training will receive an update on efforts to prevent minority disenfranchisement and intimidation at the polls, challenges posed by computer voting systems and an overview of the key states where voting rights are at greatest risk. Organizers are asking that attendees RSVP online at http://www.ElectionProtectionVolunteer.org/911
