Drug War Roadshow Comes to the Bay Area
The Drug War Roadshow will present a show in Oakland on Tuesday, May 23rd. The show examines the human impact of the War on Drugs in Colombia, South America and in the United States. DWR combines classic popular education tools (skits, puppets and humor) with rare on-the-ground digital images that examine the human impacts of US Drug Policy abroad. DWR believes that everyone should have a say in how we approach drug and crime reduction in our communities and our foreign policy. The performance will begin at 7:00pm at the First Congregational Church of Oakland, 2501 Harrison Street (near 19th Street Oakland BART).
The Drug War Roadshow (DWR) will also perform a special show in San Francisco on May 24th. The SF show will be held at 6:30pm on Wednesday, May 24th at the Women's Building, 3543 18th Street, #8.
The Drug War Roadshow is interactive, educational theatre that explores the Drug War in Colombia (the recipient of over $4 billion in US foreign assistance money since 2000) and the US through digital images, puppets and humor. The puppets represent life situations of real people who are affected by the war on drugs- from Colombian coca farmers to people in the US who have been imprisoned due to nonviolent drug offenses.

Santa Cruz Citizens for Sensible Marijuana Policy Initiative
The Santa Cruz Citizens for Sensible Marijuana Policy are seeking volunteer signature gatherers to help place an initiative on November's city ballot that will: (1) Makes investigations, citations, arrests, property seizures, and
prosecutions for adult marijuana offenses the City of Santa Cruz’s
lowest law enforcement priority; (2) Enables the city to save tax dollars and police resources to be spent fighting violent and serious crime; and (3) Establishes a city policy supporting changes in state and federal laws that call for taxation and regulation for adult use of marijuana.
While we can't fully stop the war here in our city, we can set limits for the drug warriors in our midst. Equally important, we can put our city firmly on the side of ending marijuana prohibition and actively in support of sensible policies for adult marijuana use. We have till April 20th, literally 4/20, to gather 5,000 signatures.

Steve Kubby Released from Jail
Steve Kubby was released from jail on March 6th. He faces a March 14th court date on a charge that he violated his
probation when he did not return from Canada. He had not returned because he feared being
jailed without any form of cannabis by Placer County.
By the end of a week in the Placer County Jail, Steve Kubby's medical condition stabilized. Reports say that his blood pressure appears to be under control, and he is being well attended to by the medical staff. Kubby has asked for people to stop calling the jail on his behalf. He said, "I want everyone to know that I'm alive today because of their calls."
Steve Kubby's reports from 1/31-2/2 An Interfaith Prayer/Meditation Circle of Healing was held before Kubby's February 3rd court date. At that appearance, his attorney withdrew his request to use edible forms of cannabis in jail. It was reported that day that Kubby could be released to house arrest within days. The next hearing in his case will be February 15th.

Report from Steve Kubby's January 31st Court Date
2/3: See Indybay's Drug War Page for updates
Freeman from Hemp Evolution reports that two vanloads of patients drove from San Francisco to Auburn for Steve Kubby's hearing at the Placer County Jail today. Bill McPike, Steve's attorney, said Steve was hanging on and that the supportive presence was encouraging to him and gave him strength, although Steve has lost fifteen to twenty pounds.
The press conference included an update on Steve's condition and answering questions about Steve's legal status. Supporters made it clear that they want Steve to get his medicine, and for him to be placed in the infirmary or be released to house arrest. Before a packed courtroom, Steve pled not guilty to violating the terms of his probation, and his next court appearance was scheduled for Friday, February 3rd, 2006 at 8:30 AM.

Steve Kubby Says He Needs Better Medical Care in Jail
2/3: See Indybay's Drug War Page for updates
January 30th update: Steve Kubby said today that he is in excruciating pain, vomiting, weak from inability to eat for the last several days, has blood in his urine, and has been without a blanket or even Tylenol. Read more
Medical cannabis patient Steve Kubby, who sufferes from a rare form of adrenal cancer, is still being held in Placer County Jail. After many calls to the jail from supporters, Steve Kubby has been given a blanket and pillow. Kubby feels that he is not receiving adequate medical care. He was moved from the infirmary to solitary confinement.
Michele Kubby is very disappointed by the treatment that her husband has received- the Canadian government had told the family that they would not send Kubby back to the US unless they were sure that he would receive proper medical care. The Marinol that Kubby is being given is helping to control some of his medical symptoms. Because Marinol does not contain the cannabinoids present in the whole cannabis plant, the medication will not inhibit a protein necessary for blood vessel development (this would result in the cancer tissue being denied nutrients and possibly dying). Cannabinoids seem to modulate the catecholamines produced by Steve Kubby's cancerous adrenal glands. He is not being given his special diet, and his blood pressure is not being monitored as regularly as is necessary.
Steve has said that Placer deputies coerced him into signing a waiver that states that he absolves Placer County of any responsibility if he dies in their care, because he has refused to take "conventional" alpha and beta blocker blood pressure medication. Medical marijuana activist Cris Ericson suggests that officials in Placer County are violating several laws in their neglect of Kubby.
Steve is scheduled to have an arraignment hearing in Placer at 1 pm on Tuesday, January 31st. This hearing is going to address Steve's alleged misdemeanor violation of probation. A press conference and rally in support of Steve will be held on Tuesday, January 31st at 12pm at the Placer Co. Superior Court in support of Steve Kubby. In the meantime, San Francisco city supervisor Ross Mirkarimi says he is looking into why Kubby was taken off the plane by SFPD officers at San Francisco International Airport, when the city is supposed to be a haven for medical marijuana patients.

Steve Kubby Held in Placer County Jail
2/3: See Indybay's Drug War Page for updates
Steve Kubby's attorney reported Friday that Kubby has been moved to the Placer County Jail, where he will be given Marinol. An arraignment and/or hearings will be held on Tuesday at the Placer County Courthouse in Auburn. Marinol is a synthetic form of THC.
American cancer patient and medical marijuana refugee Steve Kubby and his family have been ordered to leave Canada on or before Thursday, January 26th. The Immigration Ministry claimed that its departure orders are not subject to appeal, but the family tried to get a court to grant due process and allow them to appeal. Steve Kubby is a medical marijuana patient who has taken cannabis for some 20 years to treat adrenal cancer.
Background from before Kubby's deportation:The Placer County, California Assistant District Attorney has stated that Kubby would be arrested and jailed for at least 120 days, and possibly much longer, but the Canadian government's attorney has said that Kubby would face no risk of arrest if he is forced to return. If he is forced to leave, Steve Kubby will fly directly to San Francisco, where he will be greeted by both US law enforcement and California medical marijuana activists. If he is held in jail, he could be denied access to marijuana. Michele Kubby and their two daughters would drive to California, so they don't have to witness his likely arrest. Michele Kubby has asked for medical marijuana supporters to call Canadian Ministers to ask them to allow Steve Kubby to remain in Canada. Read more
