Treesitters Spend Thanksgiving in Jail
11/25/03: After being arrested last June 03' for defending old-growth trees in the Klamath National Forest, and after court procedures that resembled a witch burning more than a trial, Amelia Vasquez and Kristi Sanchez were handcuffed by the very officers who had testified to torturing them by denying food, water and sleep during their treesits.
Outside the courthouse, citizens displayed a banner reading “No Jury, No Judge, No Justice” to draw attention to the treesitters being denied their constitutional right to be tried by a judge and jury, rather than by the magistrate Craig Kellison, who claims the right to a jury trial was revoked in 1998. The banner was quickly confiscated. 1 | 2 | 3

Pacific Lumber pours over 40k into the Humboldt County District Attorney Recall Campaign
11/8/03: Having given over $40,000
to the effort to recall Humboldt County District Attorney Paul Gallegos, with much of the money paying for out-of-state signature gatherers who made a whopping $8 per signature, voters will head to the polls in March 2004 in another California recall.
The campaign to oust the newly elected DA came days after he filed a historic lawsuit against Maxxam’s Pacific Lumber, charging fraud.

Forest defender gets a 40 day jail sentence
11/4/03:
North Coast Earth First! activist Naomi Wagner was sentenced by Judge Dale A. Reinholtsen, on Thursday, October 30th, to 40 days in Humboldt County jail, following her conviction last June for resisting arrest. Wagner was arrested on March 17th, 2003 at the beginning of three weeks of mass public protests against Maxxam/Pacific Lumber's destructive logging practices in Freshwater, near Eureka, California.
The protest began when the company hired climbers to extract the tree-sitters from their platforms high in the ancient Redwood trees standing alongside Greenwood Heights Road. They also enlisted the assistance of dozens of county sheriffs and their vehicles, under the direction of P.L. security chief Carl Anderson. more...
Ms. Wagner was expected to surrender herself to the Humboldt County Jail on November 30, 2003, but she choose to appeal her decision.

Oakland to Pay $2M to settle Bari lawsuit
The Oakland City Council voted unanimously in closed session to pay $2 million to settle the civil rights lawsuit of Earth First! activists Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney, who sued Oakland police investigators and FBI agents after the pair were injured in a 1990 car bombing and then were falsely accused of being "eco-terrorists" responsible for the bomb. Logging in California leads to Houston-based protest
Drawing attention to Houston-based MAXXAM's role in the logging of trees in Northwest California, two forest defenders have climbed trees in Memorial park and set up treesits (listen to an interview with one of the treesitters).
They're also protesting increasing violence against their fellow activists in California who are trying to stop irresponsible, and in some cases, illegal logging by Pacific Lumber - owned by MAXXAM. They've hung a huge banner between their sits that reads, "Stop Max-Scam from clearcutting our ancient forests - Jail Hurwitz, $50,000 reward," in reference to the Charles Hurwitz, MAXXAM's CEO and majority sharholder.
Through the efforts of groups like SACRED (Southern Alliance of Coastal Redwood Earth Defenders), Houston area activists have become closer allies with activists working in California. This Friday, hear about MAXXAM's illegal logging practices from treesitters Remedy and Trust during KPFT's Open Journal at noon. Saturday, come to the Free Teach-In to Save the Redwoods in Houston, followed by a Candlelight Vigil!!

03/19/03 MAXXAM / Pacific Lumber illegally sealed off a public road all day on March 17, in order to extract marathon tree sitters, "Remedy" and "Wren," who had been up for 12 and 10 months, respectively. Late in the night on the 17th after the arrests took place, new sitters re-ascended those same trees with platforms and re-established both tree sits. On Tuesday, March 18, in the lower village, more roadside arrests took place, one sitter was lowered down to her arrest and the girthing of two trees took place while sitters where occupying them. On Wed., March 19, a treesit across the valley from Jerry on Kneeland Road was taken down. Down the road from that eviction, a woman locked down to a loader and was arrested after they cut the lockbox.
