On two successive Wednesdays, police have ordered the peaceful drum circle to leave their traditional spot in the public parking lot behind Tacqueria Vallarta and Logos using Mayor Coonerty's Ban on Public Assemblies in parking lots. These kind of hostile roadblocks are raised even in relatively simple matters where the law is on your side--perhaps particularly where the law is on your side. At this time, the author prefers to remain anonymous....

The following correspondence between me and Trisha Husome, Records Keeper of the Santa Cruz Police Department shows their reluctance to release a public record documenting Councilmember Mike Rotkin's inappropriate call to the SCPD in order to demand my arrest for merely attending a public ACLU meeting with a sign. Could this be to protect the 3-time Mayor? It seems to have that effect....

On Sunday afternoon Councilmember Madrigal set up a table on Pacific Avenue in front of O'Neill's sports shop and began distributing gauze masks as protection against the LBAM Checkmate spraying (a publicity device, presumably rather than real protection).
When I asked him whether he'd support emergency shelter measures to protect the homeless during the nighttime spraying, he was evasive and seemed uncomfortable. Rowland Morin forwarded me their e-mail exchange below....

The Sentinel reports today that Edwin Hoey got a yar in jail for being caught with 100 pounds of pot and $500,000 in cash in a storage locker. According to the story he was adamant it was for medical marijuana. Prosecutor Bob Lee is using the toxic theory that any marijuana club or seller is illegal unless he is a close caregiver. Unless people speak out about this, we can expect an expansion and continuation of the Drug War here, probably to keep his government grants rolling in....
