Waiting for Tony Madrigal
On Sunday afternoon Councilmember Madrigal set up a table on Pacific Avenue in front of O'Neill's sports shop and began distributing gauze masks as protection against the LBAM Checkmate spraying (a publicity device, presumably rather than real protection).
When I asked him whether he'd support emergency shelter measures to protect the homeless during the nighttime spraying, he was evasive and seemed uncomfortable. Rowland Morin forwarded me their e-mail exchange below....

Local Medical Marijuana Provider Gets a Year in the Pen--Call Bob Lee and Ask Why!
The Sentinel reports today that Edwin Hoey got a yar in jail for being caught with 100 pounds of pot and $500,000 in cash in a storage locker. According to the story he was adamant it was for medical marijuana. Prosecutor Bob Lee is using the toxic theory that any marijuana club or seller is illegal unless he is a close caregiver. Unless people speak out about this, we can expect an expansion and continuation of the Drug War here, probably to keep his government grants rolling in....

Council Kills Public Space in the Parking Lots
It will now be illegal to hang out (i.e. trespass) in any of the city's 20 downtown public parking lots. This amounts to at least 5 square blocks of previously accessible public space. If you are parking or retrieving a car or bike, you will have 15 minutes to do so, but it will be illegal to sit in and stay near your car (for more than 15 minutes). There is no requirement that police warn you before ticketing you....

Mayor to Back Public Assembly Ban in Parking Lots; Interview Replayed 10-18 FRSC 6:15 PM
In an interview Wednesday, Mayor Reilly announced her intention to cast the deciding vote to make it illegal to assemble, linger, or hang out in the 20 downtown surface parking lots. Those parking vehicles or bikes will have 15 minutes to come and go. She, Madrigal, Coonerty, Robinson, and Mathews voted to make all parking lots forbidden zones except for city workers and those with written permits....

"No Loitering" & "Ban on Gatherings" in Public Downtown Parking Lots Update
Last Tuesday, City Council passed its First Reading of Vice-Mayor Coonerty's expansion of last year's "No Trespassing in Public Parking Garages and Lots" law. If given final passage on Tuesday October 23rd, the law will go into effect on November 22nd, making it illegal to linger in any of 9 square blocks downtown.
