Hamas not to run in Palestinian election
Hamas will not participate in January's election to replace Yasir Arafat as head of the Palestinian Authority, the movement's leader in the Gaza Strip has said.
"The presidential election is illegal," Mahmud Zahhar told reporters as he entered talks with the new head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation Mahmud Abbas....

Al-Aqsa Brigades endorse al-Barghuthi
The Palestinian resistance group Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades says it is opposed to Mahmud Abbas as Yasir Arafat's successor and would instead back jailed West Bank Fatah leader Marwan al-Barghuthi.
A spokesman said: "We do not support Abu Mazin [Abbas] for the election and we have decided to vote for Marwan Barghuthi to be our candidate for president."...

The Palestinians...have to prove themselves; they - not the Israelis - have to show that they are a worthy "negotiating partner".
The Israelis, with their continued occupation, their continued illegal construction of colonies for Jews and Jews only on Arab land, their air strikes and helicopter executions and live-fire shooting at stone-throwing children, are not part of this equation. They are just innocently waiting to find a new "negotiating partner"...
