textThe False War Between Civilizations by New American Media (reposted)
About 20 years ago I was in my mid-teens and becoming vaguely aware of the way grown men are perceived and expected to act. One day, while riding the Toronto subway, I saw a woman and her small blond-haired son, about 7 years old, rushing to try to get into the subway car. Because of the boy’s dawdling, he barely made it onto the car before the doors closed, but his mother was left behind on the platform. As the train pulled away, the woman scowled at her son from behind the door and growled ...

textShot Through the Heart: Why Are Black Youth Dying? by Beyond Chron (reposted)
A plump, youngish African American Woman with curls and braids sat a few chairs away from me in the ER watching television. She shifted her weight. A tear coursed down her cheek tracing a lighter brown track on the side of her face. She glanced at me, rubbing a tissue over her eyes. The show was about a kid who shot another kid. "That's sad." I observed. "My son was shot a month ago." "I'm SO sorry," I gasped. "A drive-by near the Market Street Safeway," she said. "The female MUNI driver got ...

textSF Supervisors, will you nail the Black community to Redevelopment’s cross again? by Willie Ratcliff, SF Bay View (reposted)
They said it couldn’t be done, but in less than three weeks, more than 7,000 San Franciscans have signed the petition to stop the Redevelopment Agency from grabbing and “repeopling” Bayview Hunters Point. At that rate, we’ll have the needed 30,000 signatures (21,000 plus a cushion) well before the Aug. 21 deadline....

textMayor Gavin Newsom to pitch for Summer Olympics with EYE on Bayview by Francisco Da Costa
The lying Mayor Gavin Newsom is going to pitch for San Francisco and our remote chance to get an opportunity to stage the Summer Olympics in San Francisco. He will get a little over 15 minutes and he will lie to his teeth and say things that are not true most of them White Lies - he does that all the time - so we will see. Do we need the the Summer Olympics in San Francisco? The answer is no. Are we prepared for bigger things like the Big One? The answer is no? Is the Mayor serving the consti...

textSacred Burial Sites all over California and in San Francisco by Francisco Da Costa
All of us have heard about Sacred Burial Sites. There is one I saved at Crissy Field by the Marina Gate it is a Sacred Shellmound or Sacred Burial Site of the Ohlone that lived in San Francisco for over 10,000 years. There are other Sacred Burial Sites at Upper Fort Mason, the Cliff House, near former streams, rivers, and lakes, wet lands all over San Francisco and beyond. The San Bruno Moutain is a Shell Mound or a Sacred Burial Site. Once on Hunters Point Naval Shipyard were two hills - Sac...

The African Burial Ground National Monument, New York, NY is a wonderful example of "Our Journey Towards Freedom." U.S. President George Bush issued a proclaimation earlier this year to offically acknowledge the final resting place of enslaved and free Africans in the Americas. Disecting the El Dorado County / Sacramento County line is the Mormon Island Relocation Cemetry, California. Free and enslaved Africans are still recognized by the U.S. Government as "Unknown Niggers" and few seem ...

textThe invisible Indians of California by El Tecolote (reposted)
When the controversial issue of day laborers loitering on the streets appears in the media, the ethnicity is always painted with the same brown brush: Latino. But who are these brown-skinned men with baseball caps? What most Californians don’t realize is that many of these men and women who emigrate to the U.S. from Latin America are not necessarily Latino in the general sense of the word, but are Indian people....

textSoweto, 30 years after the uprising by UK Guardian (reposted)
On the morning of June 16 1976, a crowd of 10,000 black students gathered in the South African township of Soweto. They were demonstrating against a decree from the apartheid government that all pupils must learn Afrikaans in school. The protest was peaceful, but police opened fire, and at least 566 people were killed in the events that followed. The massacre brought the brutality of the racist regime to the attention of the world - and, some say, marked the beginning of the end for apartheid...

It is ironic that a government that is profoundly autocratic, that relies on elite authoritarianism, secrecy, wireless wiretaps, secret prisons and torture, can claim to be fighting for something that is becoming so rare in the U.S. (ahem -- democracy)....
