SAN FRANCISCO — In a surprise announcement April 7, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he is delaying until June 2006 a controversial ballot initiative to change state workers’ pensions from public, guaranteed-benefit programs to privatized 401(k)-like pensions.

Thousands of UCB staff and students as well as many labor activists took part in an all day strike and picket in Berkeley. The rally reached its largest point around 4PM when Robert J. Birgeneau was sworn in as chancellor. Birgeneau eventually came outside and addressed the crowd. (more reports and details will be posted shortly)...
