textHarvey Milk’s Legacy -- 28 Years Later by Paul Hogarth, Beyond Chron (reposted)
I wasn’t around when Harvey Milk was Supervisor, but he’s always on my mind when I go to City Hall. Whenever I walk through the metal detectors, I think about how Dan White snuck through a basement window of that building with his revolver to assassinate Milk and Mayor George Moscone. Whenever I climb the opulent staircase in the rotunda and look up at the ceiling, I’m reminded of the spirit that Harvey brought to this building – despite its radiance, City Hall is the “People’s House” where n...

textOakland Council in Pre-Dellums Rush to Reward Speculators by Paul Hogarth, Beyond Chron (reposted)
In November 1998, Republicans suffered huge losses at the polling place as a backlash to their impeachment effort against Bill Clinton. Nevertheless, the lame-duck House of Representatives voted to impeach the President anyway. Now Oakland City Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente (a failed Mayoral candidate) wants to rush through a condo conversion bill to reward his allies in the real estate industry – even though incoming Mayor-elect Ron Dellums opposes the plan. Dellums won over 50% of the vot...

textFoot Patrol Vote a Major Defeat for Newsom by Paul Hogarth, Beyond Chron (reposted)
For the first time since Gavin Newsom became Mayor, the Board of Supervisors successfully voted to override a mayoral veto. By a 9-2 vote, the Board approved Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi’s legislation mandating the Police to have foot patrols in four targeted neighborhoods for a one-year pilot program. Despite Police Chief Heather Fong’s last-minute announcement that she will initiate a series of foot patrols before the end of the month, Supervisors stressed that the Police Department needed to ...

textElections Are Over, Gas Prices Are Up by Stewart A. Alexander
The 2006 Election results have been posted within the past few days and gasoline prices have already begun to show increases throughout the entire State of California and in some areas prices have increased 10 to 15 cents. Alexander says, “The greatest challenge Americans are facing to stop rising gasoline prices is not being organized to demand lower prices at the pumps. It is unfortunate that America’s one party system is keeping the nation divided on this front to protect the oil giants....

textThe District 6 Victory: Whose City? OUR CITY! by Ken Werner, Beyond Chron (reposted)
Last Tuesday night District 6 and other supporters of Supervisor Chris Daly celebrated a sweet victory at local hot spot DNA Lounge at 375 11th Street. On the final day of campaigning, approximately 500 volunteers eventually swarmed over District 6 to reach voters to support the reelection of the Defender of the Disenfranchised. The last phone calls to voters were made at 7:58 p.m. to remind them to vote, and volunteers slowly filtered back to campaign headquarters in the heart of the Mission...

An all day symposium, titled "Lifting the Fog", took place Saturday at the Valley Life Science Building at UC Berkeley. To an auditorium full of attentive listeners, a number of experts (most notably Dr. Steven Jones, a renowned physicist) gathered to present their findings about the destruction of the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001....

textEd Jew and Chris Daly will fight for the people - Gavin Newsom the fireworks are on ...... by Francisco Da Costa
With Ed Jew and Chris Daly in Room 250 as Supervisors - San Francisco can witness a change for the better and in favor of those that need help most. Mayor Gavin Newsom has played his card using Bevan Dufty, Sean Elsbernd, Fiona Ma, Alioto-Pier, and chosing now and then to add the dumb Sophina Maxwell and diatribe spewing Jake McGoldrick to suit his needs. Things will change for the better and I wish both Chris Daly and Ed Jew the very best....

textFirst in nation: Oakland OKs ‘oil independence’ by 2020 by PWW (reposted)
OAKLAND, Calif. — In an action with far-reaching implications for improving air quality, curbing global warming, growing the “green economy” and developing well-paying jobs for urban workers, Oakland’s City Council voted Oct. 17 to develop a plan to make the city oil independent by 2020. It is the first such measure by a U.S. city....

textPoliticos Gather to Hear David Binder’s Analysis – With Many Happy Progressives by Paul Hogarth, Beyond Chron (reposted)
It’s a San Francisco tradition for local political junkies to gather at the SPUR Office on the day after an election to hear pollster David Binder’s analysis of the results. What was not traditional this year was the sheer exuberance that progressives felt about Supervisor Chris Daly’s hard-earned re-election victory. Roughly half the attendees showed up wearing bright green Daly t-shirts, eager to gloat about an election where the local and national outcome was extremely favorable for progre...

The photo below shows Fresno County Clerk employees counting the vote. This room is sealed off. It has no phone lines and computer data can’t be transferred in or out. All of the memory cards from the voting machines are hand carried into this room and read on special Diebold machines. There will be a cross check (1%) of the machine count against the paper ballots before the vote is certified. However, I discovered that there is no cross check for the machine count and absentee ballots. ...

textCalifornia is Still a Blue State by Beyond Chron (reposted)
With Democrats taking back the House (and possibly the Senate) and talk of a “renewed” national Democratic Party, it was embarrassing for California – one of the most reliably blue states – to re-elect Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger by a 17-point margin. Expect the media, especially the Chronicle, to follow up in the next few days with puff pieces about how Arnold was able to buck the national trend. Republicans will no doubt renew their efforts to amend the constitution so that the Austrian-...

textNewsom Biggest Loser in Local Elections by Paul Hogarth, Beyond Chron (reposted)
Not only did Supervisor Chris Daly defeat Newsom’s candidate, Rob Black, by a healthy margin -- but now the Mayor will have to meet with Daly once a month to answer his questions. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in hit pieces by the Mayor’s allies (BOMA, the Police Officers Association, the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, and SFSOS) could not convince District 6 voters to reject Daly, who led his seven opponents with 49.66% of the vote with all precincts reporting. While the City will us...

textChris Daly is in - the VOICE of the people by Francisco Da Costa
Perhaps no local election linked to the seat of the Board of Supervisors was deeply contested by some EVIL forces led by Mayor Gavin Newsom - then the seat for District 6. Chris Daly the favorite contestor and defender of those that need help most. We will never be defeated. In Unity is strength. Let us see how our future bodes but I can tell you all one thing - there will be many fireworks and they will bode well for those that need help most....
