Oct 21st Indoor Rally Cals for Freedom Now for Mumia Abu-Jamal
On Saturday October 21st, an indoor rally to call for freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal took place at the YWCA, at 1515 Webster St. in Oakland, from 2-4:30pm. This event was organized by the Partisan Defense Committee and Labor Black League for Social Defense. They say that Mumia's life is in danger, and now is the time to organize. Flyer

DEA Raids Eight Bay Area Locations
At a hearing on Tuesday morning, October 17th, a judge will determine whether Sparky Rose, the executive director of New Remedies, can post bail or not.
On Tuesday, October 3rd, eight Bay Area locations associated with New Remedies Cooperative and Potent Employment Solutions were raided by federal agents. Those arrested were allegedly growing, prescribing, and dispensing medical marijuana. A march was held from City Hall to the Federal Building on Wednesday, the day of the arraignment.

“Woodfin: Clean Up Your Act”
Emergency Action: Thurs. Oct. 5th, 7–9 a.m. at Woodfin Suites Hotel, 5800 Shellmound, Emeryville.
On Friday morning, September 29, community members including faith-based leaders, local union members and residents demonstrated their support for immigrant workers at the Woodfin Suites in Emeryville. Carrying mops, brooms, drums, and noise makers, protesters demanded "Woodfin Clean-Up your Act" and "Worker Rights Now!" as workers waved bedsheets from the windows. Photos

Activists Score Big Victory in Fight Against Battery Cages
In a concerted and multi-faceted 7-month campaign, East Bay Animal Advocates (EBAA) and other activist groups successfully convinced Andronico's Markets to forgo the use of any and all egg suppliers that rely on intensive battery cages. While Andronico's previously had claimed it was "committed to the highest standards of animal husbandry," an EBAA undercover investigation found that Andronico's primary egg supplier, NuCal Foods, kept egg-laying hens in squalid and cramped conditions. Now, Andronico's Market, a 10-store grocery chain based in the San Francisco Bay Area, will no longer sell eggs from chickens confined to battery cages as of October 1, 2006.

Black Panther Party Celebrates 40th Reunion in Oakland
The Black Panther Party 40th Reunion was held in Oakland from Oct. 13th–Oct. 15th. Events on Friday included workshops on media in the struggle and political prisoners. Saturday's workshops were held at both Laney College and the Malonga Center for the Arts, where KPFA radio broadcasted live from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday's events featured a group photo and picnic.

On Thursday, September 14th, 2006 around 3:30 pm, about 100 UC Berkeley custodians and their supporters protested on campus to demand a living wage and an end to the doubling of their workload. Demonstrators marched from Lower Sproul Hall to California Hall to voice their frustration. The marchers rallied in front of California Hall, where they delivered approximately 30 custodians' applications for the new Vice Chancellor for Equity position.

Ed Rosenthal and Richard Watts Return to Court on October 25th
A rally and press conference for Ed Rosenthal and Richard Watts were held on Wednesday, October 25th at 1pm outside of the SF Federal Building. Updates and reports Supporters are upset that Watts, who is ill, has been on pre-trial probation since 2002, contradictory to his right to a speedy trial. Rosenthal was sanctioned under city and state laws to grow cannabis and sell the plants to dispensaries.
