12/20/2003: On Saturday, several hundred people braved the San Francisco rain to protest in front of the Castro Safeway in support of the striking UFCW
workers.
Southern California grocery store workers have been on strike for affordable health insurance at Safeway/Pak-n-Save since October 11th, 2003 and locked out at Altertson's and Ralph's. 70,000 people are without paychecks this holiday season.
Strikers from Southern California are extending their strike picket lines to Safeway stores in Northern California. The strikers are not, at this time, asking workers to honor the picket line but they are asking customers to honor their picket lines and not shop at Safeway.

Immigrant Workers Statewide Strike To Protest Repeal Of SB60
12/12/2003: On Friday, Latino workers statewide went on strike and boycotted state businesses in protest over Governor Schwarzenegger's repeal of SB 60. SB 60, would have gaven ‘undocumented immigrants’ the right to a driver's license. It was passed by Gray Davis in an attempt to gather support late in the recall campaign. When Arnold Schwarzenegger became Governor, he quickly repealed the law.
The Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) has created SAVE SB 60 / Citizens for Public and Passenger Safety to stop the political right-wing of California from repealing SB60, and continuing their attacks against Latinos and all immigrants.
Thousands of workers and students statewide took part in the protest.

Thousands of workers and students statewide took part in the protest.
- At several public schools in San Francisco, as many "as 60 percent of students stayed" home.
- In Oakland, "dozens of stores along International Boulevard shut down in support of the strike".
- More than 400 people marched through the streets of Redwood City in protest.
- Many businesses in Gilroy and Turlock were shut down.
- In Orange County, protesters occupied the office of Republican State Assemblyman Ken Maddox.
- In Watsonville, hundreds of people gathered for a rally at the Main Street Plaza (1 2).
- In Santa Cruz, demonstrators at the town clock got a great response from people driving or walking by. Horn honking and waving was greeted every time by accordian music, singing, shouting, sign waving, and chants of ‘Si Se Puede!’.
Workers at the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse organized a union earlier this year. They chose the Industrial Workers of the World as their bargaining agent and asked for voluntary union recognition from Depot management. Management refused to recognize the union and the deadline passed. At that point the union filed for an election with the National Labor Relations Board, and in April, the workers voted unanimously in favor of union representation.
During the union organizing drive, which preceded the election, Depot Management took a decidedly anti-union stance. Union members were photographed and verbally intimidated. Four workers were laid off after their grant proposal was rewritten by management at the last minute, and was rejected by the Alameda Waste Management Authority. Next, a union supporter was fired, and Depot management continued to pressure the remaining union members.
The Industrial Workers of the World is convinced Management at the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse is engaged in union busting. Considering that the Depot relies upon the financial support of the community, this is particularly unacceptable anti-worker behavior.

Should you have to wait 37 months to qualify for health insurance at your job? That’s what Safeway wants supermarket workers to do. More than 70,000 workers went on strike or were locked out because they believe workers shouldn’t have to wait 37 months for healthcare.
Meanwhile, corporate Safeway CEO Steve Burd dumped more than $24 million in company stock right before he forced workers out. He’s profiteering while others lose benefits.
