11/21:Massive demonstrations have taken place in and around Trafalgar Square in London. A 17 feet-high statue of George Bush was toppled to huge cheers from the crowd at 17:22 GMT. Estimates of today's attendance range from AP syndicating around the world the number of 50,000 (later amended), over the Metropolitan Police's official estimate of 70,000 (later updated to 110,000) to the Stop the War Coalition ever increasing estimate of up to 300,000 (a number to which Indymedia reporters on the scene agree). Whatever the numbers, today's event looks to be the biggest weekday demonstration in the UK in recent years.
11/18: U.C. Berkeley Dean of Students Karen Kenney turned the clock back decades by approving sanctions against three Berkeley students for their part in a peaceful on campus sit-in. Rachel Odes and Snehal Shingavi face 20 hours of community service and a letter of reprimand permanently placed on their academic record. Michael Smith faces 30 hours of community service, plus a stayed suspension for one semester.

Perhaps the most shocking component of the administration's prosecution stemmed from its conception of "progressive discipline." Under this theory, students who take part in more than one political protest face harsher and harsher punishments. This legal theory of "guilt by association" led the Daily Cal to editorialize that "by picking out only three, the message sent from the university seems to be that free speech includes the right to participate in a protest, but not the right to organize one."

11/9: As part of an International Day of Action Against Israel's "Apartheid Wall," several hundred people turned out to SF's Washington Square Park to tear down a mock version of the wall. Photos The Apartheid Wall, known in Israel as the "security fence," is projected to reach a length of 650 kilometers, and will allow the IDF to control some one-half of the West Bank. The wall stands between 6 and 16 kilometers inside the West Bank to provide space for future settlement annexation and full control of Palestinian lands. Read more | Audio interview | Video: 1  2
The 5th annual 911 Power to the Peaceful Festival drew over 30,000 to Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park on Saturday, September 6. Originally called 911 because of the emergency nature of the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal, Power to the Peaceful now reflects the desire to be rid of "terrorism and the war on terrorism," in the words of organizer and musician Michael Franti. Over 100 social and political organizations were represented at the Festival, and a good time was had by all. Photos: 1 | 2

The San Francisco Bay Area, which came out with strength and vigor during the invasion last March, is bustling with a renewed sense of urgency as the occupation trudges on. Around 5000 people took to the streets on 9/28 for a rally and march that wound up a series of marches across the globe. Photos: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 Videos: 1 | 2 | 3

After an invasion justified by lies and forged documents, cheered on by profiteering media conglomerates, accompanied by a creeping police state pushed by Ashcroft, Bush, et. al., and "won" by shedding the blood of both poor and working class Americans and ordinary Iraqis, the occupiers of post-dictator Iraq are facing renewed resistance on the domestic front.

"While the number of 9-11 skeptics continues to grow worldwide, in the Bay Area, efforts to draw attention to the failures in the official narrative and to reveal the truth about 9-11 have become more diffuse than concentrated." Full story | CommunityCurrency.org
10/25: More than 15,000 people marched in San Francisco today, chanting: "$87 Billion for Jobs and Education, Not for War and Occupation," and "Bring the Troops Home Now!" National marches in San Francisco and Washington, DC were the largest show of opposition to the U.S. war and occupation of Iraq since the anti-war protests this Spring. Buses from all over the country brought 100,000 to the national march in Washington, DC. The San Francisco demonstration marched from Civic Center to Jefferson Square Park in the Western Addition district.

The U.S. occupation of Iraq has caused over 20,000 pointless civilian injuries. In addition, more than 1,500 people have died in Baghdad alone. The Pentagon's own numbers admit massive death rates. Women are threatened with rape when they leave their homes. Suicide and car bombs, civil unrest, and riots rock the nation daily. The U.S. has admitted to holding upwards of 10,000 Iraqi prisoners.

Evidence of the U.S.-led global war on terror extends beyond Iraq. Fighting continues in Afghanistan, and Israel continues to destroy and confiscate Palestinian land and has invaded and is destroying the city of Rafah. U.S. troops are speaking out against war, while the GI Rights Hotline has received a record number of calls from troops. At home, the U.S. government is cracking down on dissent and Arab, Muslim, and South Asian immigrants are targetted regularly.
