Tuesday, June 12, 2007 :Last week, housing advocates couldnt muster the 21 votes needed to pass SB 464, which would curb speculator evictions under the Ellis Act by limiting its scope to landlords who owned the property for at least 5 years. Not even reducing it to three years was enough to overcome opposition from the real estate industry....

Ellis Act Reform Delayed in State Senate
Friday, June 8, 2007 :Senate Bill 464, the bill to reform the Ellis Act by limiting its scope to landlords who have owned the property for a certain number of years and sponsored by Assembly member Mark Leno and State Senator Sheila Kuehl, has failed to garner the 21 votes needed to pass. The bill appeared to come within a single vote of passage, only to have San Jose's Elaine Alquist switch to a "no," killing any chances for passage this year....

Medi-Cal's Share of Cost Does Not Match the Montly Housing Costs
Medi-Cal policy is imposing a share of cost that is unrealistic. Many Medi-Cal recipients are not on welfare but are offered assistance from the government because they make too much money to qualify for welfare but not enough to pay for health care costs. As a result, they must contribute to their healthcare by paying for a portion of the cost of the services they receive.
