textNeoCons and NeoLibs Take a Big Hit, as Voters Say No to Bush, War and Free Trade by Counterpunch (reposted)
Wherever they were given the opportunity, voters across the country went strongly for antiwar candidates. True, the national Democrats, led by Rahm Emanuel of the Democratic Congressional Campaign, had tried pretty successfully to keep such peaceniks off the ballot, but in a few key races the antiwar progressives romped home. The Democrats won, despite Emanuel. If the Clintonites weren't still controlling most of the campaign money, and more openly antiwar populists had been running, the Demo...

textElection Hangover: The Democrats Won, Big Deal by Counterpunch (reposted)
Thank goodness it's finally over. Well almost, anyway. Recounts are still going on out in Montana where Jon Tester holds a slight lead over incumbent Senator Conrad Burns. The Democrats swept the House last night and now they are oh-so-close to controlling the United States Senate. And the message voters sent Bush is being heard loud and clear: the Republicans and this war are not popular in America....

textUK Guardian: Thank you, America by Uk Guardian (reposted)
For six years, latterly with the backing of both houses of a markedly conservative Republican Congress, George Bush has led an American administration that has played an unprecedentedly negative and polarising role in the world's affairs. On Tuesday, in the midterm US congressional elections, American voters rebuffed Mr Bush in spectacular style and with both instant and lasting political consequences. By large numbers and across almost every state of the union, the voters defeated Republican...

The photo below shows Fresno County Clerk employees counting the vote. This room is sealed off. It has no phone lines and computer data can’t be transferred in or out. All of the memory cards from the voting machines are hand carried into this room and read on special Diebold machines. There will be a cross check (1%) of the machine count against the paper ballots before the vote is certified. However, I discovered that there is no cross check for the machine count and absentee ballots. ...

In addition to the closely watched House and Senate races, 200 ballot initiatives were decided across the country on Tuesday. Among them, in South Dakota voters rejected a ballot measure that would have banned nearly all abortions in the state. Voters in Missouri approved a measure backing stem cell research. We discuss some of the state-wide ballot initiatives with the executive director of the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center....

textRalph Nader on Conservative Democrats, Corporate Power and the Middle East by Democracy Now (reposted)
We get analysis on Tuesday's election and the Democratic victory in the House with consumer advocate and former presidential candidate, Ralph Nader. Nader says, "This election was basically a mandateless election for the Democrats, there was really no mandate other than against Bush and do something about Iraq. Domestically there was virtually no mandate about rearranging of power - shifting it from corporations to workers, consumers, taxpayers, to communities."...

textThe Democrats Haven’t Made History by Tommi Avicolli Mecca, Beyond Chron (reposted)
“Tonight, we have made history,” declared U.S. Congressmember Nancy Pelosi after the Democrats yesterday regained control of the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in 12 years. They may also have retaken the Senate but at this writing that is still uncertain. Pelosi, who easily won reelection, is now set to become the first female Speaker of the House. “The people voted in Democrats to take the country in a new direction, and that is exactly what we intend to do,” she said. I do...

textCalifornia is Still a Blue State by Beyond Chron (reposted)
With Democrats taking back the House (and possibly the Senate) and talk of a “renewed” national Democratic Party, it was embarrassing for California – one of the most reliably blue states – to re-elect Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger by a 17-point margin. Expect the media, especially the Chronicle, to follow up in the next few days with puff pieces about how Arnold was able to buck the national trend. Republicans will no doubt renew their efforts to amend the constitution so that the Austrian-...

textAmerica Throws Bush, Rove, and Cheney Overboard in Voting for Change by Beyond Chron (reposted)
At 9:00 PST last night, what many thought would be a festive evening for national Democrats was turning into a good but not a great election. Democrats were assured of winning the House, but were prevented from a landslide by losing multiple races by small margins in upstate New York and Connecticut. Even worse, Virginia’s Jim Webb was trailing right-wing racist George Allen, and Missouri’s Claire McCaskill was behind 51-46 with 50% counted. But by 10:00 pm, the political world had changed. W...

textNewsom Biggest Loser in Local Elections by Paul Hogarth, Beyond Chron (reposted)
Not only did Supervisor Chris Daly defeat Newsom’s candidate, Rob Black, by a healthy margin -- but now the Mayor will have to meet with Daly once a month to answer his questions. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in hit pieces by the Mayor’s allies (BOMA, the Police Officers Association, the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, and SFSOS) could not convince District 6 voters to reject Daly, who led his seven opponents with 49.66% of the vote with all precincts reporting. While the City will us...
