Bay Area Animal Group to Screen Rare Agribusiness Industry Footage
Each year, more than 19 million egg-laying hens are raised in intensive confinement for the California egg industry. According to the California Poultry Workgroup, nearly 100 percent of these hens are confined to battery cages -- wire enclosures so small that birds are unable to lift even a single wing. This nearly-universal practice violates Section 597t of the California State Penal Code, which requires that confined animals have adequate exercise space....

California governor denies clemency: 76-year-old dies by lethal injection
California death row inmate Clarence Ray Allen was put to death just after midnight Tuesday at San Quentin State Prison. His execution by lethal injection went ahead after Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger denied his clemency bid. He was the 14th person put to death in California since the death penalty was reinstated in 1977, and the second person to be executed in little more than a month....

NEXT STEPS ON AB 583 -- CLEAN MONEY/FAIR ELECTIONS
On Tuesday, January 10, the Assembly Elections Committee voted 4-3 to pass AB 583, the Clean Money bill, to the Appropriations Committee. The Appropriations Committee vote may come as early as Wednesday, January 18! If the bill passes, it will go to an Assembly floor vote the following week. In order for AB 583 to remain viable, it must pass out of the Assembly to the Senate by the end of this month....
