Republican negotiators in the House of Representatives and the Senate reached an agreement last week for the renewal of the USA Patriot Act, including the permanent extension of most of the provisions that had been set to expire by the end of this year. Once it is passed into law, the bill will extend sweeping attacks on democratic rights and consolidate a vast expansion of the powers of the state to spy on law-abiding individuals....

Alpizar and de Menezes: Two victims of state “anti-terror” killings
The state killings of Rigoberto Alpizar and Jean Charles de Menezes came four-and-a-half months apart, and an ocean separated the scenes of their violent deaths. No word yet on how a subpoena can be served or enforced upon a Canadian citizen, but these are awfully strange times we are living in. Darren has been told, as most of the other recipients of the recent subpoenas, that he is a t...

Bob Avakian on Richard Pryor
Recently I was reading reports of police assaults on Black people and of Black people fighting against the police in Memphis and Miami. This called to mind a story I was told a while back. A rookie cop was riding in his police car with his veteran partner when a report came in that there was a Black man in the vicinity with a gun. As their car screeched around the corner, a young Black man suddenly appeared sprinting up an alley--into a dead end. "Shoot him!", the older cop screamed...

The German-American partnership is based on “common democratic convictions and values,” and on the basis of these values Germany and the US are seeking “to master together the new challenges and threats of the twenty-first century.” These were the words used by German Chancellor Angela Merkel (Christian Democratic Union, CDU) as she welcomed US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday during the latter’s stopover in Berlin.
