This will be the second blow to Turkish farmers after excess supply last year led to hazelnut prices plummeting to around 2.5 YTL per kilo from the previous year’s level of 7 YTL....

Germany: Guantánamo detainee Murat Kurnaz and the politics of the SPD
Following two terms in office by the government led by Gerhard Schröder, broad layers of voters in Germany know that the politics of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) are anything but social. Under the SPD and the Greens, the most comprehensive welfare cuts and the biggest redistribution of wealth took place since the establishment of the Federal Republic after World War Two. Now, following the return of 24-year-old Murat Kurnaz from his Guantánamo detention, it is also clear that the politic...

Interview with Fernando Botero at the Opening of "Botero: Abu Ghraib"
The Botero paintings must be experienced. They are worth traveling to see. The prisoners’ huge bodies dominate the large yet claustrophobic canvases. They endure pain that is palpable to the viewer...yet these men convey a strength and a dignity that stays with you. The question is posed: what kind of society, what kind of country would visit such crimes against humanity? Ask yourself, what am I doing to allow this to continue?...

Australia: A grim start to the summer bushfire season
Bushfires in southeastern Australia over the past three weeks have ravaged more than 880,000 hectares or 2.1 million acres, damaging small towns and seriously impacting on local economies. Fortunately only one person has been killed, and a sudden burst of cold weather on Christmas Day helped to contain or put out several fires. However, the intensity and scope of the blazes and their early arrival indicates that Australia’s annual bushfire season—usually three or four months long—will be one ...
