The Racist Tapestry of Lord of the Rings!
I don't imagine that it was the intention of the director or the producers of the Lord of the Rings films to paint a racist stereotypical tapestry over what could be described as a basic set of principles of humanity's behavior in the natural environment and with each other....

Howard Dean and Race
Howard Dean’s December 7 speech is the most important statement on race in American politics by a mainstream white politician in nearly 40 years. Nothing remotely comparable has been said by anyone who might become or who has been President of the United States since Lyndon Johnson’s June 4, 1965 affirmative action address to the graduating class at Howard University....

Ali Abunimah: Many Palestinians killed including 17 children in latest 'period of calm'
It has been almost two months since the last deadly attack on Israeli civilians by a Palestinian suicide bomber and there are currently intense diplomatic efforts, principally by Egypt, to turn this hiatus into a new global cease-fire by Palestinian actions.
Such efforts are in jeopardy, however, because while Israelis have seen a dramatic drop in attacks, Palestinians continue to suffer daily.
Since the last suicide attack, the Israeli army has killed more than 70 Palestinians, the v...

Dave Kersting: Our Unsustainable War on Equality in the Middle East
Peace requires us NOT TO BLAME PEOPLE, but to simply amend the POLICY that is the valve of injustice...
No matter what historic circumstances brought us to the problems of today, racism today is not the answer: it is an enlargement of the problem.
Racism does not work.
We should be GRATEFUL to find that the answer to this horrible conflict is nothing more than our hard-won, time-honored values of equality and integration, our CONSTITUTION, and everything we tell our children we believe abo...

Many civilians killed and injured from random U.S. fire in recent fight with 'guerrillas'
...had any "coalition" officials come to see any of the others wounded on Sunday...they could have seen his list of the injured - 55 names, including five women. These were, he insisted, all civilians, some with light injuries but a few with wounds so critical that they had been moved to hospitals in Baghdad or Tikrit...there was consensus that the American troops fired randomly at times, and that there were no uniformed Iraqi fighters in their midst. "All the people here are ...

MARK GAFFNEY: US Congress Does Israel's Bidding, Again
Did the US impose sanctions on Israel in 1982 when the Israeli army invaded Lebanon and slaughtered as many as 20,000 people, mostly civilians? The invasion was unprovoked. As the Israeli military historian, Ze'ev Schiff, pointed out in his book Green Light Lebanon, the border had been quiet for nearly a year. In the end, Israel had to stage an incident to create the necessary pretext for the attack, which was planned and led by none other than Ariel Sharon......

Robert Fisk: Are we now to support atrocities against the 'scum of the earth' in our war
Why is The New York Times providing space for the advocacy of war crimes by US soldiers? I doubt the US channels will broadcast any images of "brutal measures" - they've already had the chance to do so and have declined. But atrocities? Are we now to support atrocities against the "scum of the earth" - Mr Brooks' word for the insurgents - in our moral campaign against Evil?...

Kristen Ess: Un Resolution 1515 To Back Roadmap
The Americans told the Israelis in advance that the U.S. would vote with the Road Map resolution, but also said they would attempt to alter the proposal. This is a large reason why Palestinian people have little faith in international agreements. An already flawed document is diminished even further.
The Israelis listed 150 changes to the existing Road Map this year in order to adopt it, 14 of which are major....
