San Francisco, California (May 1, 2006) – 100,000 people march down San Francisco’s Market Street today during what would have otherwise have been the height of a busy Monday afternoon. The march and general strike was a small piece of the nationwide mobilization over a million strong to demand justice for immigrants. Although a majority of marchers were Latino, from the looks of things plenty of businesses had to do without immigrants of many nationalities....

Over 1.5 million people took part in May Day demonstrations to support immigrant rights in one of the largest days of protest in the country's history. Across the nation immigrants refused to go to work or school in what was dubbed "A Day Without Immigrants." Major demonstrations were held in dozens of cities across the country. We hear some of the voices that spoke at rallies on the historic day....

The neighborhood's vibrant street life, a medley of packed sidewalks, bright colors, and the smell of freshly cooked food, attracts residents and tourists year round. But yesterday, the Mission felt more like a ghost town....

This is a movement best symbolized by the endless procession of strollers, pushed by students, teachers, and workers. As the sun blazed in the brilliant blue sky overhead seemingly shade-less East Oakland, car horns blared deafening approval all along International Boulevard while ubiquitous Mexico and US flags fluttered. Students and workers, parents and children—boycotting school and work and clad in crisp white t-shirts—trekked the arduous nine mile hike from 98th St and International Blvd...

There were two large immigrant rights marches in Santa Cruz on May Day - one starting at the base of UC Santa Cruz, and the other starting in Beach Flats. The two met at the Town Clock, where the estimated 5,000 folks marched on to San Lorenzo Park together. The actions were part of a nationwide "Day Without an Immigrant" strike that saw millions of immigrants and their allies in the streets....
